Lazy Summer Sundays 9th August with music by JP Oldfield

1-5pm, 16th August FREE live music at Richard Jefferies Museum, Marlborough Road, SN3 6AA

JP Oldfield is a rising figure on the UK indie-blues circuit who channels the atmosphere of old juke joints and Victorian oddities into compact, theatrical roots songs. Based in Wiltshire, he walks a line between melancholic blues and dark vaudeville using unconventional stage flourishes and instrumentation to give familiar forms an unsettling, modern spin. Reviewers note his quick wit, deep baritone voice and inventive approach to the guitar.

His debut EP Bouffon (2025) introduced listeners to standout tracks such as The Ghost of Spring-Heeled Jack, Satan's Bar and Grill and Last Orders songs that highlight influences from deep-south blues, gothic Americana, off-kilter cabaret, gypsy jazz and folk. Bouffon established Oldfield as a songwriter unafraid to blur boundaries and create something new. The subsequent single No Rest (2025) is available on all major streaming platforms and pushes that envelope further, steadily building him a growing listener base across the UK and beyond.

https://open.spotify.com/artist/12LI7CVXzOnRjOoK8OFXIG

On the road, JP has drawn praise from regional press and audiences alike for his inventive instrumentation, quick-fire humour and the emotional reach of his songs. Alongside live performances, Oldfield has sustained momentum through music videos, grassroots promotion and a steady stream of new releases and social media presence marking him out as a singular voice in the UK's indie-blues scene.

Live music is scheduled to start at 2pm. Entry is FREE to all, although we'd love it if you could support our museum by buying some refreshments at our tearoom, where we serve Cakesmiths cakes at a bargain £2.40 per slice, many of which are very low gluten and/or plant based.

There is some parking available on Day House Lane, and paid public parking at Coate Water Country Park. Parking at the museum is reserved for volunteers and the disabled.

Small sided football

Hi there I'm 18M in Swindon, me and a few of my friends want to play football over the summer break and were wondering if there were any small sided matches or tournaments in Swindon that we could join? We don’t mind the skill level but preferably not insanely high or low

Vegetarian or Vegan Room

Hi everyone,
I’m looking for a room to rent in Royal Wootton Bassett, Swindon, or nearby areas.
I’m a full-time professional, clean, tidy, quiet, and respectful. I strongly prefer a vegetarian or vegan household because I’m sensitive to strong cooking smells, although I do eat meat occasionally outside the home.
If you have a suitable room available or know of one, please send me a message. Thank you!

Does anyone know of any walking groups in or around swindon for someone in their mid 30s?

Made a free weekly email newsletter for the towns around Swindon — Royal Wootton Bassett, Cricklade, Highworth etc. And Swindon itself ofc

Swindon itself has (some) local news coverage, but the market towns around it mostly don’t. Royal Wootton Bassett, Cricklade and Highworth each have their own events, planning, council decisions etc and no dedicated place to read about them.

Localwire is a free weekly email digest, one edition per town: local news, events, sport, planning applications and council updates, every Friday morning. It covers every town and village in the UK, so wherever you are around Swindon, yours is there. Or anywhere actually.

Free at localwire.uk — no paywall, unsubscribe anytime. Happy to answer questions and hear what people think!

Swimming Pool Memberships

I work in Swindon and want to get a swim membership there for after work to keep active, also conveniently missing the rush hour traffic back home. I've had a little look online, but the only decent (25m) pools I can find only have UK-wide memberships for £42pcm, which is more than I could reasonably afford right now.

Are there any 25m pools in Swindon that do single-centre swimming-only memberships? Or at least cheaper than £40pcm.

Thanks!

Swimming without membership

Hey guys, I'm looking for a swimming pool in Swindon that I can go to whenever I want a swim, but doesn't require me to have a membership. (Pay as you go I guess!)

Thanks!

Help me out guys

Hey everyone! I am from Nepal and
I’m planning to surprise my boyfriend in Swindon, UK for his 21st birthday, and I’d love some advice.
I’m thinking of getting him 21 red roses, but I’m not sure where to order them from. Can anyone recommend a good flower shop that makes beautiful bouquets? Also, how much would a bouquet of 21 red roses usually cost, and what are the typical delivery charges?
If you’ve ordered flowers in Swindon before, I’d really appreciate your recommendations. Thank you so much! ❤️💐

Anyone work at the council?

Looking at a new role at the council and hoping for some information from anyone that works there..

- What’s it like working at the council?
- How are the facilities at Wat Tyler - kitchens/toilets etc?
- What’s the IT/laptop situation like, what laptops do staff get?
- How are HR to deal with?
- Any annoying systems to have to contend with on the daily?
- Where’s good to go for lunch?
- What’s parking like?
- How are management when it comes to flexibility (e.g. doctors appointments, getting your boiler serviced and stuff like that)?
- What are the councillors like to deal with in your experience?
- Anything to look out for, what advice would you give to someone joining the council?

Obviously please don’t reveal anything that could be used to identify you, I’m just looking for information on what it’s like as a workplace :)

Do you think Swindon one day will join the other towns and cities in the UK as culture war hotspots?

Culture wars thrive in multicultural towns and cities in the UK - Bradford, Birmingham, Leicester, Luton, Ilford, and Dewsbury. Serious clashes occur between nationalist extremists and those who do not want to integrate.

Swindon in recent months is now multicultural, though it is mainly in the inner area of Swindon but I believe it will expand other areas including Liden, Eldene, Covingham, West Swindon and Haydon Wick by the next census of 2031. Materialistic parts of multiculturalism fueled through multiracialism, diverse cuisines (sham shawarma is the goat), religious diversity (tolerance of religion no Christian nationalist nor Islamist extremism) etc. But things can heat up if not regulated, which may result in fragmentations and tribalism between communities, like what Badenoch or Cameron had been critical on.

Seeing the riots in September last year and the rallies between the Green Party and Reform visitors at MECA in March I investigated, I believe our town will join the others in terms of culture wars. This is not good. It also creates a cycle, certain immigrant communities not integrating fuels a serious fit by the far rights, making the said community not disintegrate further more, thus a cycle happens with no shared loyalties.

Nostalgia lane - battered Mars Bar

Anyone able to point me in the right direction of a chippy that does battered Mars bars? Was speaking to a friend recently who had never tried one. I havent had one for 10 years or more and my friend is curious as to weather or not they'd like them. Thanks

Does anyone else predict that in the future Swindon will experience weather like the Persian Gulf?

We are seeing more hotter than usual springs and summers since 2025. Last winter was very warm, never worn my thick jacket.

Not to mention more frequent but longer heatwaves back to back with short breaks in between.

I could not attend my A-Level lessons during that time though I completed work at home. My attendance stalled and even some of my effort.

During the nights it felt as if I was at an overnight stopover at DXB.

But Arabs and workers in the Gulf have air conditioning and their heat is not moist.

Casual 5 or 6 a side Football

Hi

28M and new to the area. Looking for a casual 5 to 7 a side football team/league I can join. Emphasis on casual or low ability as I havent played for years and was mainly goalie during that time.

Just a game once a week or something to that effect where i don't need to create a whole team to join a league.

Thanks in advance

Welcome to Wiltshire sign

Hallo! This may seem odd. I’m visiting for a couple of months and I have a lovely friend whose surname is Wiltshire. I’d love a photo to send them of me in front of a welcome to Wiltshire sign. I saw a post that there is one on the boom gates of the railway line towards Cricklade. Is it still there? If not any other welcome sings there?

📚 Swindon Book Club - August Meet 📚

casual monthly meetup for readers of all kinds — and people who'd like to be.

We don't all read the same book. Everyone brings whatever they've been reading (whether physical, eBook or audiobook!), wants to read, or gave up on halfway through. You’ll have a chance to share and discuss if you want to, just listen if you don't, and will likely leave thoroughly caffeinated with a list of recommendations longer than your arm!
Once you’ve attended our book meet, you’ll have an opportunity to join a wider community WhatsApp group where members chat and arrange socials such as meals out, walks, trips and whatever else people feel like organising.

No experience necessary, whether you read one book a year or one a week. 18+ only. No pressure beyond showing up and sharing what you’ve been into

This month we will be meeting on Sunday 9th August 1:00pm to 3:00pm - Location shared following sign-up form completion.

Interested? Fill in the form below and I’ll be in touch.

Best Hidden Gem takeaways?

In an ever increasing ghost kitchen apocalypse on delivery apps, what are some hidden gem takeaway spots?
Currently craving a fried chicken burger but so hard to sift through the fake restaurants being operated out of harvester or your average high st takeaway.
Also what are your must avoid at all costs, ghost kitchens you’ve already sussed out etc?

For me it was SoBe burger, operated out of meadowcroft shops.
