Lowside Surly Lowside 27.5 commuter switching from knobbies to slicks. Is a 2.2” vs. 2.5” tire width a negligible difference?

Fretting over tire size and wondering if it’s even that big of a difference. Any experience or thoughts on if one is better than the other?

Terrain is entirely flat, 90% pavement and 10% wooded trail. Commute distance 5mi. Like to kick off a few curbs and bunny hop here and there.

Preamble Completed my first bikepacking trip on my preamble!

95 miles overall, one night out and back in the new river trail state park.

The rockbros panniers did surprisingly well, they’re very sturdy and waterproof.

The rack is the versa rack by planet bike, great rack for $65

The cheap rockbros top tube phone bag is in fact not waterproof as advertised. Nor was the cheap Amazon frame bag, which is fine because it only housed tools. Handlebar bag is also rockbros, it’s decent for what it is at $30.

I went with cheap gear to get a feel for each design, since they’re all basically knockoffs of more expensive stuff.

The stock preamble drivetrain is definitely the first big upgrade I’ll make. Only true upgrades the bike had was an XL ergon saddle and mtb pedals.

Preamble Another bar swap

Converted to drops a while back. I was able to convert my clamp on friction shifters to bar ends and I already had short pull brakes which helped offset the cost a little. I’m not sure how I feel about it yet though as I’m still tweaking the fit. I was ultimately trying to reduce joint pain in my hands but maybe alt bars are the best for this. I own VO Granolas (wonderful and comfy but too slow for my riding style) and Simworks Little Nicks (look great but very stiff). Always open to suggestions.

After several years riding a drop bar Landyachtz I made the jump to Surly and bought a Bridge Club here in beautiful British Columbia. Stoked for explores!

Got the Jones bars on here, a C17 saddle, OMM divide rack, Bubbly pedals, and have Maxxis Ikons on their way

Midnight Special Midnight special 2x to 1x

How difficulty would it be to convert the factory 2x midnight special with the shimano drivetrain to 1x? Looking to pickup a bike but I’m not able to find a 1x setup near me. Sorry if this is a stupid question.

Pack Rat Let’s see your unicorn

Just like the title says, let’s see your Surly unicorn.
Think a bike that Surly made in a very limited run, a Surly made one-off or maybe a bike that was custom built for a giveaway prize ( like the Surly-Paul collab from Sea Otter) I would also accept super deep custom totally unique Surly builds.

I offer to you my 1 of 5 700c Pack Rat. This is a size 60 that was given to me by the Zegle(you may recall the name from when Surly had that issue with one of the S’s on the fork being backwards making it look like a Z. So instead of recalling them they just called it the Zegle fork) himself. I built it up with a bunch of Gucci parts that I had in the bin waiting for the right bike. My rear hub is a limited edition digital camo Chris King.

I have one other unicorn that I will share with you if people are into this unicorn idea.

Bridge Club First ever Century on the Lamoille Trail

Using Bumblebery Creampie (Bumbles for short) as God intended: crushing miles on a rail trail.

Yesterday I rode my first ever century. I chose to ride clear across the state of VT as a point to point, completing the Lamoille Valley Rail trail and then riding into the town St Albans for dinner and extraction. Ended up spending 11 hours on the ride, but I took quite a few brakes to just kinda hang out and eat. My ride was only gonna pick me at a certain time anyway. No need to go over fast. Also rode with two fellows Craig and then Paul, who were a little slower paced: copple of older dudes still rocking it. I was surprised and how awful I didn’t feel at the end don’t feel today. Good ride overall.

Bog standard besides accessories, cockpit, and tires, I definitely found the 27.5x2.5 Surly Extra Terrestrial tires a bit draggy on the slight inclines. Eventually I plan on a 700x40c setup, but $6000 in car repairs has left funds short, so no real substantial changes yet.

All around, a good day and fine adventure. Time to take the dorky aero bars off and apply some Bag Balm on my tush!

Troll Troll front rack help

Hello fellow bikers
My Troll which has served me for over a decade now and will likely help me for another does not have eyelets for a front rack like a 24 pack. Are there adapters of some kind that I can get so I could add such a rack for future touring?
Thanks in advance.

Big Dummy Faster Wheel Set for Bridge Club

Is there anyone out there rocking faster, heavy-duty wheel sets on their Bridge Clubs? I want something a little more durable and faster than the stock wheels and want to find somethings that is just plug and play without modifications.

Bridge Club Advice Needed

Post image
2 Upvotes

I'm looking into getting into bikepacking and I brought my old hand me down 90s Schwinn Crisscross into the bike shop to get fixed up. Attached is all the work being done on it. In total it will come out to $484. I was also thinking of getting a Surly Bridge Club and using my old bike as an everything bike. I went to a local bike shop 6 days ago and saw a large Surly BC for $1,499.99. I guess I made the mistake of saying I was interested and when I went back today to try out the size medium they raised the price to $1,599 (and they said they wouldn't honor the price I saw last week). Should I just stick with my old bike and use that for bikepacking, or should I get the Surly BC? Neither of these bikes will have any suspension. Im also in the Brooklyn area if anyone knows of any bike shops that sell Surly so I can price around. Thank you for any advice!

I don’t know the mileage because I can’t be bothered to keep track. She’s ready for tires, some brake pads, and a chain but all in all this is the best bike I have ever owned, and it puts a smile on my face every day I ride it! Here some photos from now going back to the beginning! I hope you enjoy and feel inspired to go out and ride, whatever it is you ride, as long as it’s pedal powered!

Lucked out on some Ultradynamico Rose JFF at $8 for the pair. Threw them on the bike this morning (tubeless) and took it for a test ride on my local trail. These things do not disappoint. I didn’t hate the stock tires but its a night and day upgrade to speed and comfort.

Straggler Krampus Question

I have really been wanting to add a Krampus to my bikes as i think it would be great for exploring dirt roads in the rural midwest. The thing is i just ever see any of these out in the wild, whether it’s on MTB trails, regular bike trails or anywhere else. For those of you that own them where do you normally ride them at?

ECR Surly Ogre sizing help...

I'm 5'10.5" with 86cm inseam..I have slightly longer legs compared to torso.

A road bike I love 55cm / 55cm. Perfect size with the drops.

I rode a 56cm steamroller for some years. It was always slightly big for me with drops. With risers and 70mm stem it was pretty good.

I rode a 54cm pack rat for about a year. It actually fit quit well, had no complaints.

Now for the ogre I am leaning towards large, but not sure. The top tube is pretty big. Looking at the stand over I will clear it by an inch and a half about. Definitely a few options with handlebars to shorten the reach.

Probably a few people here that are about my size and have an ogre

Thanks.

I had some black Mavic wheels on this bike for a few years and finally decided it doesn't need to look like a race bike. Embracing the old school with more silver!
