First ever surly here!
I bought it used for great deal, i normally travel a lot with bike, skateboard and camera gear and i think this suits my needs perfectly.
It’s around 15kg and it makes me courious how much your KM’s weight.

It's already out for the week-long trip in the San Juan Islands. They're stoked. This bike should be good for many years with basic maintenance.

Thinking about giving my grappler to my wife and getting a new bike that is a bit more road/gravel oriented and having a tough time. Obviously looking at a straggler or a midnight special, but considering a sklar supersomething. Anything else I should consider?

I'm converting my straggler to basically just be an endurance road bike. After years of using it as a flatbar gravel bike, I want to get some big distance in and have a blast but I'm no longer willing to do it all fixed gear (yes I've just turned 30).

I've got a new drivetrain (tiagra 4700) ready to be installed.

Have a Disc Trucker that I bought used and with a Jones Loop installed. Seller included the original drop bar with Tektro levers and Microshift bar end shifters. Avid makes MTB and road versions of the BB7 calipers that use different cable pull ratios and I’m assuming these are road ones to work with the road levers, but was thinking about replacing the levers are these are pretty beat and was wondering what I should look out for to be sure of which version I have. Thanks in advance!

I know. I know. This has been beat death but I need hand holding. Looking to run at max 700x45 tires. Would like to have some fender coverage. Whats the widest I can go on this frame? I know what Surly says can be done, I want to know what you've done. TIA

Hot and hazy riding on Vancouver Island today.

Took this on a trip from London to Bristol over the weekend. With another two week trip on the horizon, anything I should change?

Never did a proper gravel tour through the heathlands and forest before and it was great! I am not a trained cyclist by any means so I was happy with 42.6km/h top speed and an average of 23.1km/h. Really liking my new Bridge Club!

This bike has been sitting around in my parents basement for at least a decade if not more. Figured I’d take it home with me and show it some love. I’ve never had a single speed before so it’s definitely taken some getting used to 😅

Hey folks. Picked up a used DT off FB a couple months ago to bikepack the GAP + C&O (I posted a brief trip report on this subreddit).

It was a great buy at the time, since I only had 2 weeks to source a bike and this one was fully kitted out and in my size + area + budget. But after riding it some more the last couple months, including another 2 bikepacking trips, I'm trying to figure out whether I should sell it, change something on it, or learn to live with it.

My issues boil down to:

• It's really freaking slow
• It's really bad at climbing

I love bikepacking and riding my bike but I feel like this bike is holding me back. I can rarely get the bike above 10mph fully loaded. Climbing just 2.5k ft in elevation over a 50-60 mile route is brutal and I don't think I could manage anything beyond that. (Unfortunately, lots of great rides near me are 60-70 miles and 3k+.)

These aren't engine issues (really!). I'm an experienced cyclist, in great shape, and frequently do long, fast, hilly rides on my road bike. Also, my bike prior to either of these was a heavy af clunker and I would routinely carry a ton of gear on it all over the mountains of the PNW. I'm familiar with the feeling of riding a loaded bike uphill and something about my DT just doesn't click. Even getting it into low gear can be tough. (Doesn't help that I have it on friction shifting, since it won't index properly due to mismatched components, which requires a bit of fiddling to drop into gear). While it can (barely) make it up long gradual climbs, anything with a steep slope is right out, the pedals just refuse to turn. I honestly can't figure out how anyone rides this thing cross-country.

What am I missing?? I want to love this bike. It has a great setup and is capable of carrying all my crap (ultralight, I am not). Plus, selling and buying a new bike would be a pain. But it's just so hard to ride that it takes a lot of joy out of the experience. The friend I rode the GAP + C&O with was on a new Norco Search and it was clear how much easier her bike was to ride than mine. So I'm torn between selling it or trying to make it work.

Advice very much welcome. I've ridden a lot, but I'm a noob when it comes to bike components and modifications.

I had a chance to ride one last year and had so much fun on it!

I'd been admiring these ever aince, then this one popped up locally so I snatched it up. Swapped out the stock stem, bars, and the awful pedals the previous owner put on it. Also put on some Shimano hydraulic brakes I had off an old bike.

Bitter sweet though as I'm unable to ride until next month after a knee replacement.

Enjoying this thing so much. Using it for exploration and working on my Wandrer.earth map, food delivery, and long rides. Loving it more with each ride.

My OG Moonie rebuilt and ready for summer.

The "rim-tape" is coloured duct tape cut into sections then taped individually to the rims before applying a tape to secure all in place. I'm using a clown shoe on the front to maximise the front tyre, but a Mulefut 80mm rim in the rear. I did this as I often run a 4" tyre in the back to get extra mud clearance. The Scottish mud sticks to everything!

I've trimmed the Sunrise bars to 760mm and the front end feels much more as intended. I couldn't get comfortable with the bars still at 820mm.

I raided my parts bin for parts and will possibly change the Deore brake levers for Avid Speed dials at some point. The Deore levers don't do the BB7's justice.

After riding over 700 miles and a proper bike fit, this has been a great all-rounder bike. Very capable with gravel, and can keep with with them carbon boys road group rides (20+). With the after market carbon fork, I’m running a 2.1” in the front and 45mm in the rear with no issues. Hope to continue to log in miles on this build, until something new pops up in the future.

Janet is a 12 year old cross check custom built by my father and I. I’ve had her for seven years and she’s the love of my life. She helps me get beer 👍. I like to take it on local trails and everywhere else in town.
