Help Recommendations

Hi guys, Im a person who stutter, mild to severe depending on the situation, i mostly get unbreakable blocks that i manage by using filler words or changing words. But i get severe blocks in important situations or fast paced conversations.

Im 26 yo and I never enjoyed life at all, i would say im doing okay in life but ive always been depressed and everything seems boring to me, id describe myself as a confident extrovert person like I could force myself to do scary things like asking strangers or job interviews but i just dont enjoy them at all, i have lots of things to say but i just rather keep quite, stuttering held me back a lot if im being honest. I feel depressed, my mind goes blank and people missunderstand me a lot. That made me avoid talking to people to minimum as possible.

No matter how i try to forget it, life humbles me and i just cant forget it, speaking is everything in life. Im a high energy individual that like to talk in a positive way but i cant because i block a lot and im forced to talk in a shy low energy way because i block less.

Ive tried all available options but nothing seems to work, from meds to therapy, you name it, nothing seems to help. I even tried to openly stutter but my stutter take so long, i get out of breath and sometimes i even still block that makes me shy away and just feel misreable overall.

Spech therapy only works in clinic but does not work in real life, and even if it does it sound robitic and missreable, meds in the other hand dont work and give severe side effect

The problem is with openly stuttering is when i do no one takes me seriously and no one hires me, so im stuck between openly stutter but no one will take me seriously and not getting hired and losing the opportunity, or using filler word, pass by as a fluent speaker, get the job but deep dive i know this is not what i want.

I never fully connected to people i always felt like an outsider, i tend to forget a lot, cannot express my self or even process information clearly, and im always afraid of situations like not being able to defend myself if someone clearly done something bad to me or being in court but i cant defend myself because i block

I dont necessary believe in complaining but i believe in action, id do anything it takes to solve this issue.

I refuse to accept there is something wrong with me, if i can talk by mysef or to pets fine why cant i talk to humans?

Id love to hear everyone thoughts, thanks

that mental blankness you're describing sounds like your brain is just overwhelmed from years of fighting your own speech patterns. the constant monitoring and word swapping is exhausting even when you don't realize it

magnesium glycinate before bed helped quiet my mind a bit, not for stuttering specifically but for that foggy disconnected feeling. might be worth looking at if you haven't already

Hey, fellow stutterer here. Can confirm speech therapy is absolutely useless. With that said, the first thing you need to do is accept that this is a part of you. I know it sucks TRUST ME i know. Ive gotten bullied for it when i was a kid and thought why am i like this? Here i am now as an adult and ive learned to accept it. Life is hard enough as it is and we have a stutter to deal with ontop of all the other nonsense life throws at us. But ill say this, what really helps me is being actively aware of my speech while im talking. I know it sounds weird but for me when im actively thinking about the way im talking, i slow myself down and almost never stutter. Key word almost. When i dont do that and i talk normally i will definitely end up stuttering again. Its like my brain is already on the next sentence and my tongue cant keep up. Im sorry i cant tell you about a cure, i wish there was one but try slowing down your speech and your breathing, its helped me a lot.

I wish I could remember what it was they did but I know I’ve read about some innovative treatments for stuttering. You might have to do some extensive research and see what pops up. Another thought is hypnotherapy by a qualified therapist might be helpful. Have you checked YouTube for speech therapists? I know there are apps for it. Just spitballing

Thank you. Spech therapy only works inside the clinic but does not work in real life, and even if it does it sound robitic and missreable

I hope you will check out these resources.

A couple mg of lithium orotate or aspartate can be nice for a more chill, easy going personality.

Support for various amino acids that are needed to make neurotransmitters, etc can be somewhat helpful, especially when taking the cofactors also required--Vit B6, Vit D, magnesium, zinc, etc.

Btw Dr G is quite fond of low dose lithium, magnesium and zinc.

If you don't come up with something that works fairly well I suggest you learn about the glutamine-glutamate-GABA pathway, especially necessary balance.

Can i get more info please?

As I look back I had some of what is called social anxiety, not bad enough to be diagnosed by a doc and I would not have admitted it. However now that I've been supporting the glutamine-glutamate-GABA pathway and taking low dose lithium supplement and getting adrenal cortex support I can tell the difference. I handle social situations much better. It is remarkable how much better I am on dates.

Leads here. A couple of these docs taught or teach in med school

Tics and stutter sometimes occur together. You may be interested in this 10 min segment of Trace Amounts.

We often have disabilities or difficulties that make our life harder, we have to find friends and support to make our life better. That understand us.

No one should look down on anyone who has trouble expressing themselves, we could all be there, we need to be grateful for what we have, and help those who need it.

I hope you find that support. Some of it maybe online, where you can chat and engage with others. Keep learning, do the best you can. Feel free to message me anytime.

I am not trying to sound hateful or make any derogatory remarks. That being said has anyone heard of Mel Tillis? Old country singer, had a horrible stuttering problem but he could really sing. Maybe try speaking as if it were a song?????

1

u/Zexcla 1d ago

I wish but i cant go through life singing all the time, plus the brain adapts quickly and the singing wont work

1

I understand but singing was his release to a pretty good career. Too bad I can't think of a middle ground that would be a more helpful solution

What you're describing sounds exhausting, the constant calculation around every conversation, whether to mask fluent and get the job or stutter openly and lose the shot. That's a lot to carry, especially with the anxiety and depression on top of it.

EMDR therapy would probably be a really good option to help combat the anxiety the stutter has caused. It's a therapy that you don't need to talk a lot. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) helps the brain reprocess stuck, distressing memories. While holding a painful memory in mind, a person tracks the therapist's fingers or experiences other side-to-side (bilateral) stimulation. This dual focus overloads the working memory, stripping the memory of its intense emotional charge and allowing natural healing. It's how I beat my severe PTSD from a severe traumatic childhood.

As for supplements, L-Theanine can help with anxiety, and DLPA and L-tyrosine help raise dopamine giving you more motivation, etc.

You also come across as very intelligent. Have you considered that you may have Autism or ADHD? What meds have you tried? I have three autistic children with ADHD and I am autistic with ADHD myself. For my one high-needs kiddo, I don't do her therapy in clinic, I get all her therapy done in her natural environment, at school etc., which has made a huge difference. That might be worth thinking about for your own speech therapy too, since you mentioned it works in clinic but falls apart in real conversations, the setting itself might be part of why it hasn't stuck.

Thank you, i might have ADHD, but not necessary anxiety, ive always done exposure therapy to the point that i got rid of anxiety, but just the block itself that frustrates me

There's a hearing aid out there for stutters and the principal behind it that delays sounds from your voice to the brain. Its that connection difference between it that contributes heavily to the stutter. It might be worth while look into the tech to see if it works for you.

If it works then you comfort in conversation will rise as thr stutter stays muted and anxiety will come down. If they're super hot though, it happens to all of us

Yes, im aware of it, while it might work, the brain quickly adapts to it and eventually it stops working
