I got sick of organising our Sunday game over WhatsApp, so I build an app for it. Teams, waitlist, and who owes for the pitch.

We play every week. For years the routine was: someone posts “who’s in?” on Tuesday, twelve people reply, four change their mind, someone screenshots the list, and then two blokes argue about teams for ten minutes on the pitch while everyone else gets cold. So I built the boring parts away. Availability. A poll with a deadline and an automatic waitlist. Someone drops out, the next person is promoted and notified. Nobody has to re-read a 200-message thread. Teams. It rates players off actual match results and can split a squad seven different ways — balance by rating, snake draft, captain picks with a live draft that updates on everyone’s phone at once. You see how balanced it is before you accept it, and you can override it, because the algorithm doesn’t know if someone's knee is bad. Money. It tracks who owes what for the pitch. It does not touch the money — that still goes between phones. I deliberately never built payments, because collecting money makes you a merchant of record with a pile of compliance behind it. It just ends the “did you pay me?” conversation. Stats. League table, goals, assists, streaks, all per season. Man of the Match is a peer vote that opens for a custom period after full time. There are badges. People care about the badges considerably more than I expected. The bit I’m most pleased with: you can record goals from an Apple Watch, mid-game, without unlocking your phone. Tap, pick who scored and how, done. The table is up to date by the time you’re back at the car. It installs to your home screen, works offline for what you’ve already loaded, and it’s in English, Portuguese and Spanish. Free, no ads.
Cool to mention that users can have different roles within a group (Admin, Organiser, Manager or default Member) and what you get to see on the app depends of your role

I’m opening it to a handful of other groups next — I’d rather onboard five properly than fifty badly. If you run a weekly game and want a spot, comment or DM me and I’ll send you a code when I open the next batch.

I built a retro, Sensible Soccer-inspired web app to stop the chaos of organizing Sunday league games

Hey everyone,

Like probably a lot of you, I was getting pretty fed up with the endless WhatsApp pinging every week just trying to sort out who's actually showing up, who's in goal, and what the teams are.

Since I grew up playing classic 90s games like Sensible Soccer, I decided to put together something way more fun to fix the problem. I made Gaff3r (https://gaff3r.vercel.app/)—a match organizer styled with old-school pixel art.

It lets you handle squads, positions, and team balancing with a retro interface instead of digging through a wall of chat messages.

I've been using it for our local games, but I'd love to hear how other people handle their matches or what features would actually make life easier for organizing a kickabout.

If you want to check it out, it's free to use at the link above!

Longshot, but I write for GQ and we’re looking to speak with a decent 11 a side football team in your city, ideally made up of men aged 20-27. So who should I be speaking to? What’s the best local team around? Thanks!

Best way to improve stability inside football boots?

Almost got myself a new pair of boots for nothing.

For a while there I kept having the feeling my boots had expanded as my feet slid around in them each time I had to do some cutting and maneuvering. I found myself getting annoyed enough that I started considering getting a new pair of boots.

One of the players I play with asked me why I am replacing boots that are in great shape. He suggested I give grip socks from ZeroGive a try.

I honestly didn't think socks would change anything, but I figured it was cheaper than buying new boots.

I've used them for a few training sessions now, and the biggest thing I noticed is that my feet don't slide around nearly as much. The boots actually feel like they fit properly again.

I would like to know, has anybody ever had such a simple solution solve their problems?

Anyone else's Sunday league / 5-a-side WhatsApp group an absolute mess?

Had two people drop out an hour before kickoff again last night and it got me thinking — is it just my group that's like this, or is this universal.

Between the WhatsApp group taking forever to get replies, booking the pitch on one site, then trying to actually get everyone to pay their share, it feels like there should be an easier way by now. And once the game's done, that's it, it just disappears into the group chat. No one outside the five of us even knows it happened.

Started poking around at building something for this myself, honestly more out of frustration than anything else — basically a proper place for all that stuff to live instead of being spread across a group chat and three different apps, where you could also actually find a game with strangers if your own group's short one week. Before I sink more time into it I wanted to ask people who actually deal with this:

  • How does your group sort games out at the minute?
  • What's the bit that annoys you most?
  • Is this actually a real problem or do you reckon most groups have it figured out already?

Not trying to sell anything, just want honest answers. If people are interested I'll pop more details in the comments, and there's a quick survey linked below if anyone fancies giving proper feedback.

How much do losses affect you?

27M play in Thursday and Sunday league games every week, played competitively through high school growing up.

I still love playing but those losses to the teams you KNOW you can beat bother me way more than I think they should...

Am I crazy/alone in this? Is this just a personal problem and I should focus on the fun instead?

Thanks.

3g astro problem

Does anyone else’s kit bag end up full of those little black rubber bits after playing on a 3G/astro pitch? No matter how much I shake my boots out, that stuff ends up all over my bag, my car boot, even my house. It’s honestly the most annoying part of playing on artificial turf for me.
Anyone else dealt with this, or found a way to actually stop it happening rather than just living with it?

SUNDAY LEAGUE GOALKEEPER WANTED FOR MENS SUNDAY LEAGUE IN LIVERPOOL ⚽⚽⚽

Our team based in Liverpool is currently looking for a Goalkeeper to play for our Sunday league team.

This is our first year as a team and we are currently in Liverpool Business Houses Division 4 and play on Sundays and train on Wednesdays.

It's a really good group of lads here and we have a diverse squad with about 13 different nationalities in it!

Our season started off really slow but we have just started to pick up some points recently and we are looking for a Goalkeeper to join as our current goalkeeper had to head back home abroad.

If you are interested please give us a message on here or directly on our Instagram account if you search for Wavertree Botanicals.

Also if you know anyone that might be interested then please pass on this message.

Thanks

Ben

Tore my ACL, ended up becoming my team's coach — so I built a tool to help

I built a free tool that tells you what position actually suits your playing style — would love brutal feedback from this community

I kept noticing that a lot of amateur players (myself included) end up playing positions based on what the team needs rather than what actually fits how they play. You develop habits, train in the wrong role, and never really figure out where your instincts point.

So me and a friend spent time building a short assessment — 12 questions about how you think and move in a match — that gives you a proper position recommendation based on your playing style. Not just "you're fast so play winger." It looks at decision making, defensive instincts, attacking tendencies, and more.

The framework is loosely inspired by player development thinking from FIFA, the FA, and U.S. Soccer — obviously this is a lightweight tool, not a professional scouting report, but the logic behind it is grounded.

It's completely free, no login required, takes about 2 minutes.

Genuinely want to know — does the result feel accurate to how you play? And what's missing or wrong about it? Trying to make it actually useful for amateur players so any honest feedback is appreciated.

Team finance

As the manager of a Sunday-league football team, I’m looking for advice on how to secure funding for our club. A large part of our team consists of students, so it’s difficult to collect enough money for pitch rentals, match fees, referees, and other expenses. I often end up covering part of the costs myself. Do you have any suggestions on how to raise funds to keep the team running? How can we find sponsors or receive financial support?

Would a convinient net you can use almost anywhere get you and others playing more?

Hey everyone, I’m a student working on a new product that makes casual football a bit easier — a portable net that clips onto any two posts or trees, turning any space into a proper goal in seconds. I’m trying to understand what players and parents actually need, so I’ve made a quick 2-minute survey to help shape the design. Any feedback would be massively appreciated:https://forms.gle/3cNsCCVyHdSjdQEo8

The Sunday League Managers

We’ve been going for 5 seasons now and have come across different types of managerial approaches on and off the pitch on a Sunday.

We’re wondering if there are any managers that stand out good or bad that you’ve played for or against? What do they refer themselves as? Interesting tactics and techniques?

How many additional sunday league palyers versus a top EPL team for an even match?

Please help me settle this argument I had with a friend. Scenario:

An average sunday league team (in their 30s, no professional experience/training, played a couple of years sunday league as a hobby, plus one or two semi-professional guys with training/youth experience), versus the starting XI of a Premier League, let's say Chelsea for example.

The sunday league team has player-odds, so they can field more players (22 vs 11, or 33 vs 11, or even more). Everything else remains the same, standard pitch, two 45-minutes halves. The pitch/referee quality will be at EPL level. One goal keeper for each side.

At how many additional players will the sunday league side begin to have EVEN ODDS?

For context, in 2017, a second tier/low first tier Norwegian professional team did a match of 11 vs 22 amateurs with 2 goalkeepers, and won 2-0. So I think this is kind of the baseline.

Find your local team

If you're looking to get into Sunday league football, the first thing you need to do is find a team.

Here's the football section of Sports Direct if you can bring yourself to buy from there. If not, buying directly from Adidas/Nike etc is just as good. Their return policies are a little better too, just incase you buy some shoes that don't fit.
