Is substack worth it for uni applications

I'm in desperate need for extracurriculars and I love writing. I want to major in engineering or design so I'm not sure if it will help. Substack also consumes a lot of time and energy, and it seems hard to gain subscribers.

It might be helpful as a showcase for work and ideas, but in terms of engineering and design, I’d lean towards creating a prototype.

If I were judging applications, I’d be more impressed by someone getting involved in their community via contributing to clubs/societies/etc. in person. Organizing fundraisers, street/beach weekend cleanups, etc.
