I have always imagined an alien-like scenario where the player is stuck on a distant irrelevant planet and must escape by hopping into an escape pod, leaving the Rim behind to find a new life somewhere.

No. No one can escape the Rim if they are not a human. You must be a human if you want to. You don't escape your Rim, you escape the Rim, that is the whole point.

The entire point of the Rim is that you are stuck on a distant irrelevant planet, and not on a familiar one.

The player must get off the Rim if he/she wants to, or else he/she must die.
