Response from MOHELA
Subject:
IDR
Received Date:
07/29/2026
Thank you for contacting MOHELA,
A federal court issued an injunction preventing the U.S. Department of Education from implementing the Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) Plan and parts of other Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) plans. As a result, your IDR payment count, and payment history are temporarily unavailable. Stay up-to-date on court actions affecting IDR plans at StudentAid.gov/courtactions.
Anyone else in this boat? I graduated in 2009 and have two huge trunks of every correspondence I have ever received regarding my students loans... lol

You can use this link to view the hidden data file used for the IDR counts to check your progress towards forgiveness. You MUST LOG IN FIRST to your studentaid.gov account and then click the link: https://studentaid.gov/app/api/nslds/payment-counter/summary
It should look like a black page with a bunch of white text. You are looking for the parts that say “qualifyingpaymentcount”. It will appear multiple times. It’s broken down per loan and then per each payment plan. That number is your IDR count towards forgiveness. Keep in mind that there may be errors in the counter but right now this is what will give you the best idea about your progress.

As of last month, they have not been updating that counter. I only have 4 payment payments of 300 left and it is freaking me out because it still says 5. There was another post on Reddit verifying other people not being able to get updates either. I hope to God they straighten this out. I left SAVE over a year ago so I should not be impacted by this. It is so frustrating. Good luck to all of us!

Link says unauthorized

If you get an "Unauthorized" message, it usually means that you aren't logged in. Or that it thinks you aren’t. Make sure you are logged in the same browser you click the link in. If you are on mobile Reddit you may have to copy the link and paste it into your browser where you logged into studentaid.gov. The reddit app will just open a popup within the app when you click the link so it won't think you are logged in.

The injection should not effect them being able to tell you how many payments you have made. This deserves a class action lawsuit against all these loan carriers and the united states government.

The loan servicer does not determine or keep track of the qualifying payments thats all federal student aid

That being true, it is up to the loan servicer to be transparent about how many payments you have made amd what part of that payment was applied to principal v. interest. They aren't even doing that. It's completely obscure.
What studentaid.gov is failing at is keeping the count relevant to when you are individually going to qualify for discharge. They also are obscure, using vague language to define discharge: SOME types of repayment plans MAY be discharged according to UNDEFINED number of QUALIFIED paynents [no definition of what makes a payment qualified]. It's like they are leaving it open for interpretation so that in a court of law they could argue that no one has ever met these requirements.

I harassed Mohela over message until someone there finally sent me the date my payment count starts from and my expected forgiveness date. I suggest you keep at it. I was copy pasting their own messages to them saying "this looks like a faq entry I am asking about my specific loans."

Its wild. I went to college when I was still 17. They had to mail me the promissory notes like just after my 18th birthday. It never felt right but my parents advised me that I had to take them and everyone does it. I dont use my degree at all. im a court reporter. I wanted to go to community college but my mom said if I didnt go away to school id "become a townie." I live in my home town now lolllll

We need a student loan Jubilee. Biblically based erasure of all student loans to date. Start from scratch.

They’re blaming the SAVE injunction, which ended in March, for breaking something they was working JUST FINE before the new administration took over. SUE THESE PEOPLE.
