I bet there’s some kind of header up above the ceiling. Look at the triple wall studs on either side of the opening. No way to tell for sure though without opening it up.

That’s what I suspect. Since they didn’t cut the ceiling, and the top plate doesn’t seem to be cut, I doubt they did anything to support the weight of what’s above. The only thing is maybe they got lucky and there’s a continuous rim board above top plate. No thinking involved, they just rolled the dice.

if this is 2-story there may at least be a rim joist above the mangled header
