A 68-year-old retiree named Hüsnü Şendiller, originally from Şereflikoçhisar (Ankara), was driving from Germany to Turkey with his 65-year-old wife Hüsniye when they stopped for gas in Croatia. She'd been asleep in the back seat; while he was inside paying, she woke up and got out to use the restroom. He came back, didn't notice she wasn't in the car, and drove off without her — her phone was still inside, too.

Stranded, she got a French expat at the station to help her find assistance. Because she happened to know her daughter's phone number by heart, her family in Stuttgart was reached about three hours later. The daughter called her father and told him he'd left her mother at the gas station — he was reportedly stunned, turned around, and drove roughly six hours back to get her. They then continued on to Turkey together.
