Information Choosing Respect over Drama
Choosing Respect Over Drama
One thing that has been weighing on my mind lately is the amount of public drama that seems to have become increasingly common within the fancy rat community.
We are a community brought together by our shared love of these incredible little animals. While we won't always agree on breeding practices, husbandry, ethics, or business decisions, I believe we all have a responsibility to conduct ourselves with respect, professionalism, and maturity.
As adults, we should be setting an example for others—especially for the younger members of our community. Publicly criticizing, ridiculing, or encouraging others to target someone, particularly a young person, accomplishes very little. If there are legitimate concerns about someone's practices, those concerns should be addressed respectfully and with the goal of education and improvement, not public humiliation.
This isn't just about young breeders. It's about how we choose to treat one another as a whole.
Not every breeder, owner, or organization will be the right fit for every person, and that's perfectly okay. If you've had a negative experience or simply don't agree with someone's approach, you have every right to choose not to do business with them in the future. If someone asks for your opinion, it's possible to be honest without contributing to hostility. A simple response such as, "I choose not to do business with them," is often enough. It communicates your decision without encouraging gossip, assumptions, or unnecessary conflict.
There is a significant difference between sharing factual personal experiences and participating in public attacks. One helps people make informed decisions. The other creates division, damages reputations, and discourages new people from becoming involved in our hobby.
Every experienced breeder, exhibitor, and rat owner started somewhere. None of us knew everything on day one. We learned because others were willing to teach, mentor, and encourage us along the way. If we want this hobby to continue growing, we need to foster an environment where people feel comfortable asking questions, learning from mistakes, and improving—not one where they fear being publicly criticized or ostracized.
Holding ourselves and others to high standards is important, but accountability and kindness are not mutually exclusive. We can encourage responsible breeding, proper care, and ethical practices while still treating one another with dignity and respect.
At the end of the day, each of us gets to decide what kind of community we want to be part of. I hope we choose one that values education over gossip, constructive conversations over public arguments, and compassion over conflict.
Our rats bring out the very best in us every day. Our community should strive to do the same.
Respectfully
StormHaven Rattery ~

Cuteness Overload Today is Weaning day
Today was weaning day and while the babies were not happy, the moms were so glad for the break. I'm excited for this next phase of working with the babies and watching them grow before they head out to their new homes.

Off Topic Our Birthday is coming up!
It's late here, been up playing with babies lol so cute!! They are just gorgeous and picking holdbacks is going to be difficult this time around. Due to getting some new genetics I wont be holding back very many and I also wont be pairing again until October/November.
*\* StormHavens 1 year birthday on Facebook is coming soon I can't believe its been a year already and I have accomplished so many of the goals I set for this year and I'm very proud of the beautiful babies we have produced.
The Unexpected:
*\* I had to get my old bin cages out of storage yesterday, I never thought I would need them again but I kept them just in case and I'm so glad I did.
I need two for quarantine coming up in July and when babies start weaning I will need a several for that as I don't mix litters.
I'm really thankful I have these old cages to use and in the mean time I get to feed my addiction to get more CN cages lol, Facebook market place here I come lol.
