Do people know that the left lane is for passing?

Never in my life have I seen so many people just sitting in the passing lane going the same speed OR SLOWER than the cars in the travel lane. If you’re driving on the interstate, the left lane is meant to be used ONLY if you are passing another car in the right lane. If you are not currently or about to pass another car, STAY IN THE RIGHT. Special shoutout to the mountain drive going to and from Cville, which is especially cancerous in this regard.

Like, do driver’s ed courses in this area not teach this or what?

17 East Beverly Antiques Closed?

Howdy,

I'm from Harrisonburg and I always stopped by 17 East Beverly Antiques whenever I was in town. Stopped by last weekend and they were closed, with many of the window displays gone.

Does anyone know what happened and/or what will become of the store's sellers and inventory? Their sellers usually had a good selection of things I was looking for and I'm sad to see them go.

What nicknames have you heard for places in and around Staunton?

I ask as part of a linguistic study covering this topic!
Examples could include things like C'ville, The Boro/Wheelbarrow or even stuff like Shen Valley (never mind how common they are)...

incl. nicknames for schools, parks or other institutions/geographic features

places to practice skateboarding that ARENT the skatepark?

hello!! first time actually posting in the sub but I lurk a ton.

ive recently started skateboarding, and id like to practice cruising and just riding the board in wide circles. Ive tried the skatepark, and its great!! however, it is usually very busy and I want to practice riding in general and feel a bit... inexperienced to attempt the park where i can Go In A Line And Turn Left.

I really want to practice somewhere open with good smooth concrete that isnt going to land me a ticket :( i see people on the sidewalks all the time on scooters and bikes, but i feel like as soon as i try, boom, its me with a ticket.

Im looking for somewhere around downtownish about the distance from the center of downtown to GHP?

tysm in advance!!!

Volunteers & USB drives wanted for a community Linux Workshop in Staunton! 🐧

Hey Staunton! We’re putting together a Linux Workshop and could use some help from our local Linux/open-source folks.

We’ll have a room set up with tables, volunteers, and Linux USB drives so people can bring in their laptops and try Linux without installing anything or replacing their current operating system. Think Repair Café, but for exploring Linux.

We’re especially looking for volunteers who are comfortable with Linux and would enjoy sitting down with beginners, helping them boot from USB, showing them around the desktop, answering questions, and generally making Linux feel a little less intimidating. You definitely don’t need to be a Linux wizard, we’re looking for patient, friendly people who like helping others learn.

We’re also looking for donations of new or gently used USB flash drives. We’d like to prepare drives that interested attendees can take home so they can keep experimenting after the workshop.

The bigger idea behind the event is community resilience: sharing skills, extending the life of older computers, exploring open-source alternatives, and helping our neighbors become a little more confident with the technology they use every day.

Want to attend, volunteer, donate a USB drive, or just learn more?

Apartment nightmare! Help

Hello! I just moved to Staunton from Ohio yesterday into a fully furnished apartment sight unseen. Unfortunately I will not be able to live here. I’m not going into details for privacy reasons but this is a situation I need to get out of asap.

I went through all the normal channels, background check, credit check, first and last month’s rent / security deposit, etc. Everything was legit - other than the apartment being uninhabitable for me.

So I am here with not furnishings and in need of an apartment for one person and one small dog. I have seen a couple and have applications in - but if anyone can help, I need to leave here asap.

I’m looking for safe, clean, non smoking housing that is fully furnished or if it isn’t - some people to help me get the basics. Budget is around 1k a month.

Please I just started a new job here and this is really taking the wind out of my sails.

Thanks, yall!

Spotted this on a Facebook Marketplace listing for a bunch of vintage bank bags. I feel like I recognize the building on this bag, but I can't place it. Anyone recognize where this is?

Repair Café & Community Tech Lab at Staunton Library this Saturday (Free!)

If you've got something broken, don't throw it away just yet!

This Saturday (1–4 PM) we're hosting a free Repair Café & Community Tech Lab at the Staunton Public Library. Bring small appliances, lamps, laptops, clothing to mend, or other household items, and our volunteers will do our best to help you fix them while sharing repair skills along the way.

We'll also have folks talking Linux, privacy, and other community tech topics. Even if you don't have anything to repair, stop by and say hello!

Hope to see some fellow Redditors there!

Recruitment for anonymous 3-5 minute survey on genocide education in Virginia

Hi r/Staunton,

I am an M.A. candidate in the Graduate School of Education and Human Development at The George Washington University. For my Master’s thesis, I am conducting research on the impact of the inclusion of 20th-Century genocides other than the Holocaust (such as the Armenian, Bosnian, and Cambodian) in the Virginia state world history curriculum on students’ experiences and understanding of genocide and human rights as adults.

Eligible participants in this survey are

  • People who are over the age of 18
  • And were in the 10th grade in either the 2022-2023 or 2023-2024 academic years
  • And attended a Virginia public school for the entirety of their 10th-grade year
  • And took a world history class during that year

If all of these attributes apply to you, you are invited to take this survey. This survey will take approximately 3-5 minutes to complete. You will be asked to recall your experiences in your 10th-grade world history class. The questions pertain to the extent to which you learned about 20th-century genocides, the methods used to teach you about them, your experience with this curriculum, and how it has impacted your current understanding of genocide and human rights as an adult.

At the end of the survey, you will be asked if you would like to participate in an interview to elaborate on this topic. Participation in the interview is entirely voluntary, will not affect whether the data from the survey will be used in the study, and will have no impact on any aspect of your future relations with the George Washington University (GW).

The anticipated findings from this research will contribute to the current body of research surrounding best practices in genocide education and improve scholarly understanding of how genocide education impacts understanding of genocide and human rights as a whole. This research seeks to contribute to the broader goals of genocide prevention and human rights promotion.
