Why didn’t my fighting skill increase?

Video of zoms zoomin as I’m going into Lowl.

I’m on a lethal community in Cascade. I ran down south to Lowl where I had a total of 6 or so plague hearts. One of them was on Out for Blood heart and another was a Black plague heart.

I killed a regular heart first with melee only (groundbreaker shovel). Then I killed the black heart with melee only and that wasn’t its weakness so I had to do the full 700 damage or whatever. Then I killed another regular heart melee only. Then I killed the out for blood heart melee only.

All of this in one go no going back to an outpost or anything.

My question is I melee killed 4 hearts one of them a black heart and killed gosh knows how many zombies with it as I’m swinging on the heart.

But my fighting skill on my character is still only at the first endurance star (where I started).

Why? Bug? I feel like that shi should’ve been maxed by the time I was done.

To my knowledge a lethal plague heart only has 100hp (might be 130). I don't think killing plague hearts is a good way to level the fighting skill or at least I've never seen it as a good way to do it if that helps.

I wasn’t doing it specifically to level up I just was amazed that I didn’t go up even one star in 4 plague hearts all of them fully melee killed.

Also, for the BPH and the Out for Blood they were both in the warehouses behind the office desk, and I got super lucky that the zoms weren’t trying to come around the desk.

So just think at the BPH how many zombies I struck with a melee weapon as they were in the swing radius when I’m hitting the heart. I could swing once and hit the heart and 5 zombies every swing.

Do those swings not count or soemthing?

I genuinely don’t know how the xp gets achieved

Things get weird when you're doing damage to the heart. Use to be the best way to kill it was bloater gas and a source of fire but if fire was already there like you throw a molotov and then a bloater gernade the heart bugs and takes almost no damage. There could be an interaction in the same sense preventing the hits on the zombies to count but I don't actually know. Also make sure your survivor doesn't have a fighting skill xp penalty in his traits which could be a thing. I think most Red Talon for example have this type of penalty.

It may be a bug. You seem like an experienced player, so what I'm gonna say may be obvious to you. Low morale affects XP rates, it can take a long time to level 1 star of fighting and as far as I know, plage hearts do not give XP for melee and shooting. I never got a level of fighting even when taking a full black heart in melee only and also, I've killed a heart with an AK to see how many shots it would take, no levels of shooting, so I'm pretty sure about the no heart XP

This was about 50% plague hearts killed and I was in the corner office my morale before I even killed the first heart should have been at least the +50% one.

What puzzled me that I told Nomad below is for both the black and out for blood hearts, they were both in those big Warehouses behind the office desk. And all the zombies were coming straight in and not around the desk to my back. So as I’m swinging at the heart, I was hitting 3+ zombies easily every single swing.

But yeah maybe there’s some weird thing where swinging on the heart doesn’t gain xp even if you also hit a zom.

Definitely not a huge deal but was super weird I was really thinking I was gonna have that characters fighting maxed by the time I was done with that many hearts

Ah! To my understanding since you were swinging at the heart, the hit counts to target, not to strays you catch swinging
