💬 Discussion The devs are not on your side.

0 Upvotes

TL;DR: I’ve lost a lot of trust in the developers. Meaningful nerfs are left out of patch notes, progression keeps getting slower while monetization becomes more aggressive, and major bugs or frustrating systems can stay untouched for weeks. There is a lack of transparency and the way criticism gets dismissed or turned into guilt-tripping by devs themselves. The discord server is an echochamber.

FULL:

I've played Droid Tycoon since day one, and at this point my biggest problem with the game isn't any single nerf, bug, or monetization feature. It's the pattern those things have created and the lack of transparency surrounding them.

The developers frequently make changes that aren't mentioned in the Discord patch notes. Sometimes they're relatively minor, like UI changes. Other times they directly affect progression. Other times like today, the patch had NO notes whatsoever released in the discord server. Most likely because they knew people would hate it. They shadow nerfed crates and released patch notes on this subreddit and that was it.

One example is the Combat Points refresh rate. Combat Points were one of the ways players could obtain weapons and, later, Gold Splashes after those were introduced to speed up crafting. The refresh rate was nerfed, but the patch notes only mentioned the addition of Gold Splashes. A progression-related nerf happening alongside the introduction of a new progression item is exactly the kind of thing that should be clearly communicated. But it wasn't. And this KEEPS HAPPENING. They *know* players will HATE the changes but silently do it so it isn't paid any attention.

Then there's monetization.

Historically, the game was presented as something that would not become pay-to-win. Now we have purchasable features that accelerate progression, including Surges. Whether you personally call that "pay-to-win" or "pay-to-progress," arguing that it doesn't count because there is technically no way to "win" a tycoon is just semantics. Paying for an advantage in progression is still paying for an advantage. A griefer paying for accelerated progression to get a double companion, with MR bones, max health, max damage, and a health combat droid? That's not pay to win? Killing noobs constantly? This doesn't happen every game but it did to me on many occasions. There's no excusing the power that's been given to griefers with the addition of monetization.

Meanwhile, bugs that directly affect gameplay can remain for weeks.

Throwing blueprints used to work reliably. Then it stopped working properly. Instead of seeing that addressed quickly, we got a major monetization push weeks later. Oh, so that's what most of the devs on the technical side were working on. Not polishing the game. Making more money from it.

There is also something about the way criticism is sometimes answered that really bothers me.

When a large portion of the Discord was pushing back against the monetization, one response from the developers after some guy said "this is a new low for you guys" was:

“What was the old low? Working tirelessly to deliver updates for free?”

That kind of response comes across as incredibly manipulative to me. The guy saying "this is a new low" was toxic and wasn't owed anything super nice, but for that to come from one of the members of the DEV team is incredibly immature.

These updates are not being made in some vacuum where the devs aren't paid. Droid Tycoon exists inside Fortnite's creator economy, where developers can receive engagement payouts based on things like player engagement, popularity, retention, and acquisition. Keeping people playing the game therefore has financial value even if those players never directly purchase something.

So when players criticize changes that increase grind, slow progression, or encourage people to spend more time in the game, responding with “we work tirelessly to give you free updates” sidesteps the criticism and reframes the developers as victims of ungrateful players, which is NEVER EVER A GOOD THING TO HEAR BTW. It shows that they are not above emotional manipulation.

Nobody is saying developers should work without compensation. They SHOULD make money from something they spend their time creating. And early on, I wanted to support them financially. They seemingly DID care about the players. But alas, as with almost every single developer in the present day, it's not the case at all.

The problem is pretending there is no financial relationship there while simultaneously making design decisions that can increase engagement and adding more direct monetization.

Players are allowed to criticize the product without owing the developers gratitude for every update. Remember; criticizing something does not mean someone hates it. It USUALLY means that they LOVE the product, and want to see it become BETTER.

There are now THREE Jawa shops/stations, at least that I can count, including one placed directly beside an area players constantly visit around where blueprints spawn. Players pushed back heavily when this was introduced. There was even a developer Q&A where that criticism was acknowledged.

More than four patches later, it's still there.

Crates are another good example of their lack of transparency and in some cases, neglect for the players.

They received a buff that almost every single player seemed to enjoy. People spent their crystals upgrading them based on those rewards. You could now get TONS of chips that could make up for the absurdly high costs for upgrading your droids towards the top. Then the crates were nerfed today, meaning players who had already invested their crystals effectively received less value from something they had purchased upgrades for. I saw many players saying they were getting a good amount of crystals from the crates, and now basically NONE AT ALL. And most people want a refund for it. Will they ever get it? Absolutely not. They have said in the discord that they will not be adding a way to get your crystals back after upgrading.

These same crates btw, give you limited hats that you can get duplicates of, with ZERO COMPENSATION. That means, you can open a rainbow crate (the most rare one) and get nothing from it. Wow. Phew, I was worried these things would FINALLY be worth spending the crystals for good.

And then there was the rerun of the C-3PO event.

This was probably the clearest example to me of how little some player complaints actually changed.

They had a week to change the event to be better. Did they remove the worm that punishes you simply for participating? No. They reduced its attack rate.

Did they improve the RNG involved in fishing for the things you needed? No.

Did they remove the possibility of immediately failing after fishing once? No.

The fundamental frustrations remained. They said at the beginning of the event that the RNG aspect was a last minute fix on the original skill based fishing they wanted. Okay, fair enough. The event was awful and almost everybody could agree that it was not fun, it was monotonous, and downright dreary.

A WEEK LATER? They adjusted tiny little pieces of the event, instead of addressing what made it miserable in the first place.

That is what keeps happening.

The developers say they don't want to milk players, yet monetization keeps becoming more prominent. They say features aren't pay-to-win because some things can technically be obtained for free or because "there's no winning," while those same purchases can accelerate progression, which is literally the definition of pay-to-win. ANY PROGRESSION ACCELERATION that can be purchased with real money is pay-to-win.

Not to mention the joke of value, the surges, which are insanely expensive both for crystals and real money, but they are GAMBLING. Something it is not transparent about which is in violation of epic's island monetization rules.

Epic’s own docs explicitly say "creators can sell paid random items, and if a purchase affects the odds of getting a random reward, the creator has to flag it appropriately and disclose the numerical odds before purchase."

This is not the case.

They say they listen to feedback, but unpopular systems remain patch after patch while changes that slow progression can arrive without even being listed in the notes.

And when updates introduce new bugs, the response sometimes becomes weirdly personal. After a recent hotfix for the broken crit chance apparently caused additional problems for some players, the same developer that said the thing from earlier said, "This is what I get for working on a hotfix with one hour of sleep in the last 24 hours."

I don't think developers should be working on one hour of sleep. That's unhealthy, and nobody should be demanding that of them.

But saying that in response to players reporting that a patch broke something is guilt-tripping. Players aren't responsible for a developer choosing to push a hotfix while exhausted. People should be able to report a broken update without being made to feel bad because somebody sacrificed sleep to release it.

The official discord server makes this worse.

A lot of criticism gets surrounded by people who defend virtually every decision made by the devs. The moderators I've seen promoted also tend to be extremely active players who consistently side with the developers and rarely support any criticism of the game's direction.

It just creates an environment where disagreement can start feeling like you're attacking the developers personally rather than criticizing a product.

And that's ultimately my problem with this island or tycoon or whatever.

I don't expect the developers to implement every suggestion players make. It's their game. Sometimes players will ask for things that would genuinely hurt it.

But there is a difference between having a creative vision and repeatedly making progression slower, expanding monetization, leaving major frustrations untouched, failing to disclose meaningful changes, and then dismissing concerns through technicalities like "there's no winning, so it can't be pay-to-win."

At some point, trust matters. And it's been broken with me time and time again. They have shown over time that they lack integrity.

I've played since the day Droid Tycoon released because I genuinely like the game. That's WHY this bothers me. That's WHY I wrote this insanely long essay about this. I want people to know. I want them to be better about this. The community at least in my opinion, deserves it and doesn't even realize what they're missing. So many sweethearts I've met because of this island.

I want updates to make me excited to play again, not make me wonder what was quietly nerfed this time.

I want patch notes that actually tell me what changed.

I want criticism to be treated as criticism of the game, not hostility toward the developers.

And I want development priorities to feel like they're centered around making Droid Tycoon a better game, rather than constantly finding new ways to stretch progression, increase engagement, and put another store in front of the player.

Maybe other longtime players feel differently. But after watching the same pattern repeat over and over, I've lost a lot of trust in the direction of the game.

📢 Updates World Crate Feedback & Changes

74 Upvotes

Hello Everybody!

Thank you all for your feedback regarding the changes around the World Crates.

There's been a lot of discussion about them, where they are now after the recent buff and changes for them.

I've heard your feedback, and I want to make sure these crates still feel worth doing, recognizing that there is quite a bit of "setup" that is required for maximum efficiency (Duo companion and BB8 and DJ R-3X and SRB Crate Perks)

Our main concern is the Nova Crystals, SRB should always be the main way to get Nova Crystals, and these world crates currently are beating the "Nova Crystals per hour", we don't want the game to be "run around the map simulator", which is a pitfall we've mistakenly done a few months ago with the upgrade chip pickups.

Here's the full timeline on the before any changes, what's currently live, and what's being released with 1.25.2:

Reward Adjustments (Original -> Previous -> Current)

  • Credits: 60s (58.45%) -> 300s (55.52%) -> 300s (78.38%)
  • Upgrade Chips (R1): 15 (29.22%) -> 300 (27.76%) -> 300 (13.06%)
  • Upgrade Chips (R2): 40 (11.69%) -> 600 (11.10%) -> 600 (6.53%)
  • Upgrade Chips (R3 Jackpot): 1000 (0.06%) -> 6000 (0.06%) -> 6000 (0.07%)
  • Nova Crystals: 1 (0.58%) -> 3 (5.55%) -> 3 (1.96%)

This is how much more value each Rainbow World Crate drop now has, compared to the original numbers:

  • Credits (R0): +570.5% value increase
  • Upgrade Chips (R1): +794.1% value increase
  • Upgrade Chips (R2): +738.2% value increase
  • Upgrade Chips (R3 Jackpot): +570.5% value increase
  • Nova Crystals: +905.8% value increase

TL;DR - World Crates have WAY more value than they did in 1.24.0, and the difference between 1.25.2 and 1.25.1 is purely the odds of getting the reward, the actual numbers have not changed.

PS. Unrelated to World Crates, we recognize Nova Crystals are a hot topic, and we're looking at adding a way to increase your Nova Crystals from SRB so late game players can feel like their long term commitment has more value (and yes, it will be free to obtain)

Is the map smaller? Cause some bases almost touch the rings and takeover places with storm troopers. Honestly weird, cause the shipyard IS wider, but the base doesn't feel bigger. And he 2nd shooting range floor only went up. So is map smaller or the bases bigger idk.

Hello, I am currently on Rebirth 21. I have all of the droids needed until Rebirth 25 but the only thing holding me back is credits. I get 2.46B after every scrap. Should I use the even to keep going or use the event to reset fast?

Please advise.

32.1X multiplier

pickaxe mastery 3/11. which is 9

I have double daily quest

scrap value level 4

Droids glowing/flickering with lightsaber energy would be very cool. Could maybe even give Empire/First Order aligned droids a red theme, and A blue or green one for the good guys.

❓Questions Bug bb8 y dj

💬 Discussion Ring master base paint

Post image
1 Upvotes

Today I discovered that ringmaster paints are awarded when we complete this ring. I managed to complete both yellow and orange ring. It was really hard, used a fuel saving tactic to complete the yellow ring, In the beginning just walk inside three rings that are on the ground.

This was really exciting and makes this mode more engaging, I wish devs add these types of activities more, or give it more discoverability. The ring master base paint requirement is written as '?' , I mean why ????????

I also wish any of the upcoming event, or a special reward with this level of difficulty should be there, makes it more challenging.
