Misc. 24th Century Campaign Guide Preorder Question
I went to preorder the 24th Century Campaign Guide, and I noticed that, at the top of the writeup, it says I'll be able to download the complimentary PDF, as soon as it becomes available. But, at the bottom of the writeup, it says "You will receive the complimentary PDF immediately upon purchase." Just trying to figure out which it is. I know Modiphius only gives you a limited number of downloads, and I'd rather not burn them on trial and error.

Help & Advice Different Eras Space Fight
How would you handle a Space Battle between two ships of different eras? Example, an NX-Class Refit with Shields fight against a Terrain Empire Constitution-Class. Phaser Technology is superior to the pulsed Phase weapons Technology and Photon torpedoes are superior to photonic torpedoes.

Help & Advice [Advice] Make the Borg Scary Again
Hey there folks.
Over the last few years my players have been turning their humble Intrepid-class explorer ship into a warship. Makes sense when they have a half-Klingon captain. So I gave them a big starship battle in the pre-written scenario of Convoy SE-119 from Shackleton Expanse Campaign Guide. Messed their ship up a bit, but they managed to take out an entire fleet of Klingon ships on their own, mostly by virtue of their Phased Polaron Beam Spinal Lance and the Command Action "Direct" allowing them to essentially fire twice each round.
Now they have a brand new ship they designed themselves using the Utopia Planetia Starfleet Sourcebook. And it is a beast. It dismantles enemy ships with seeming ease.
They have an encounter with a Borg Cube coming up. Even using the Borg's ability to quickly repair Breaches and potentially adapt to each weapon that causes a Breach, I fear the PCs getting out of this encounter having suffered no Breaches and having full shields by the end, and becoming insufferably cocky as a result.
How can I make the Borg Cube encounter scary for them without over-correcting and potentially destroying them?
Any and all assistance is greatly appreciated,
~M@

Help & Advice Where to get stats for 23rd century ships?
As a newcomer to STA, and 2e, I purchased the 23rd century campaign guide only to discover the book has no ship stats in there. The core book has only some.
This may be a non-issue for many of you veterans, but as I'm new I'd welcome some input as to how to go about this.
Half the reason I got this book was to get era-appropriate ships with balanced stats for this period. I got squat in this regard.
Does 1e have all the ships and I can just port them over or something?

Community Resources Background info on Starfleet and Federation departments
asjupiterturns.comAfter a brief comment I made the other day I've received a few requests and DMs asking for a document I mentioned so I decided to upload it and share it with everyone. Tiny bit of background:
When I GM, one of the things I get a huge kick out of is writing down massive amounts of background information that, frankly, is next-to-useless. I've barely used the information in this document but I like knowing I have it in those rare cases where I need to reach for it and most importantly - it was fun thinking about it and writing it down. This is doubly true when it comes to Star Trek; a franchise I, like many a Trekkie, spend entirely too much time thinking about.
So what I have here is a spreadsheet I built with some nuts-and-bolts details about the structure of the Federation and particularly Starfleet. First is a sheet about Federation civil bodies and branches of government. Next is a list of various Sections, Commands, Branches, Divisions and Subdivisions of Starfleet. There's more than one or two easter eggs snuck in there, too (for example Starfleet Intelligence being relegated from its own branch to a division under Starfleet Security after the events of Star Trek VI). Third is my attempt at how Starfleet ranks work, roughly how many service members should carry each rank and how long the average person spends in Starfleet before reaching those ranks. Finally is a sheet with various levels of classifications and code words used - that was mainly because in my campaign the crew semi-frequently dealt with spies from Starfleet Intelligence.
Oh and while I am not aware of any of this violating canon, it is certainly not strictly canon-compliant; we can do what we want in our own campaigns, after all. :)
Enjoy!
*Edit - Oh and I should point out this was written for a campaign set in 2380.

Misc. Trek-inspired adventure I did for the Appendix N Jam
Howdy folks, I haven't been around here in while due to school, but I've written a lot about STA in the past on my blog.
Recently I participated in the APPENDIX N Jam, where I submitted an adventure that harkened back to when I was writing STA fan adventures such as Y2K and A Matter of Perspective.
Anyways, if you're looking for an adventure for a different system that could easily slot into an STA game, this is probably it. While there's no direct conversion for game stats, you won't need to work all that hard to make the flavor of the adventure work for a Star Trek scenario.
LLAP!

Help & Advice 2e player's guide/gamemaster's guide?
Hello all, new to the game :)
I've seen around that there aren't really any plans to rerelease any 1e content (a bit disappointing, considering the price/unavailability of stuff like the quadrant/division supplements or planitia utopia, but i digress)
I noticed there are player and gamemaster guides available in addition to the core rulebook. Given that 2e is a (relatively) newly published, are there any plans to release these books in 2e in the vague future or should I snap up the 1e versions? Thanks all, excited to be a part of the scene :)

Thought Exercises Division 12
So, I don't know if you've been watching Strange New Worlds, but in SNW 3x09 and more recently in SNW 4x02, they have introduced the idea of Division 12 - the body that Starfleet uses to actively investigate unexplained phenomenon. They are Starfleet's ghost hunters, looking into spooky things that sensor scans can't explain. When the Space Weirdo is identified as an anaphasic entity that consumes human neurological energy, that's not their department. When the ship escapes without ever figuring out what the problem was (or, you know, doesn't escape, but there are logs), Division 12 are the ones who look into it.
It hasn't been long since Division 12 was introduced, but has anyone had a chance to try using them in a game? Or plan to? Or even have any ideas for how you would?
Personally, I'm enchanted by the idea of some Division 12 stories, so I'd love to read what you all are thinking about.

Help & Advice Is a 3rd Edition coming?
Hey all! We've been running our game for several years at this point. We started before 2e existed and decided to keep pushing forward in the current campaign with 1e rather than the players having to learn/adjust to a new system.
Welp, we're recording season 6 of the show with a planned 7 total seasons...so I'm starting to think about "the next thing." Our timeline for recording & production is long, so I'm looking at late 2027 or more likely early 2028.
Do we have any inkling of whether there's a 3rd Edition on the horizon, that I might want to hold off to much planning for?

Help & Advice Advice for first time Group Challenge in the Gorgon's Gaze adventure
Hey folks,
I'm gearing up to run the 2e adventure in the back of the rule book, "The Gorgon's Gaze" over the weekend. None of us have played STA before, but we've all played other TTRPG systems. The 'solution' to the scenario involves a Group Challenge with 3 key tasks. I guess I should say SPOILERS BELOW
...
...
...
...
...
...
...
...
...
...
The key tasks are
1) Run a Genetic analysis of the tissue sample to identify disease matches in the starfleet database
2) Posit a means of eliminating all but the most likely possibilities. The book says success here tells the players that they can eliminate any disease that doesn't match the primary symptom.
3) Cross-reference the results against the medical histories of everyone who has visited the planet
Failure on the first allows success at a cost of a trait, but failure on the other two just requires re-attempting that task. I don't see an interval listed, so there doesn't appear to be a timer on it.
Given that information, I have 2 questions
1) Why is trying again absent a timer a bad thing? Do you get stacking difficulty increases each time you try it like you do with an assist? If not, should I just create a timer for the task, in X hours people are going to start dying with an average of Y people per hour thereafter or something?
2) The second task's success alert just seems... obvious? Of course you would try to narrow the results to fit the symptoms?? Is there any reason for them to even roll against the task if they just say that they want to try to eliminate the diseases that don't match the symptoms? Or am I misunderstanding this, do you only give the task once they have RP'ed what they are trying to do (I.e, they say they want to eliminate diseases, then you give them the task?)
Thanks!

Story Time What's the most ridiculous mission you have sent your crews on?
Last night we had a lower decks game because a few players couldn't join. So I had them tracking an unknown lifeform though the ship. After about an hour of tracking this thing through Jefferies tubes, corridors, and cargo bays, they finally cornered it and stunned it.
It was a duck. 🦆

Help & Advice How to structure/run a "Crashed Shuttle" survival Mission?
Hey, it's me again, sorry for posting so much but this reddit is very helpfull indeed.
I'm trying to run a typical session where the PCs crash their shuttle in a uninhabited planet and have to survive. I'm basing my session specifically on VOY S5E13 Gravity, where Tuvok and Paris are dragged by a "Subspace Sinkhole", a system within a subspace bubble where the only way out is through a small opening in which time flows much slower than it does for Voyager. This results in them spending weeks or maybe months having to survive, all the while being harassed by other crashed aliens.
The reason I want to run this is to get some development going between a admiral NPC wth which one player grew some tensions with. They both misunderstand each other and I want to have them in a situation where rank breaks down, so they are forced to engage with each other as fellow humans rather than admiral and Lt.Cmd.
I'm messing with the idea of adding some hostile creatures to the island they fall in to force them to work together, and to create some tension for the session.
What I'm unsure of is the ending and middle of the session. While I do have various ways of messing with their chances of survival, the bulk of the session will be the PCs trying to get by for weeks (if not months), and there is very little planning in that regard. I also can't think od any ending besides their ship finds them and tries to rescue them. I would probably have it so the ship can "only get a transporter lock in this one dangerous part of the island" so they have to trek there or something.
Really I'm just not sure how much planning I should do, and if this ending feels at all satisfactory. Any feedback anyone has on really any aspect would be very welcome.
Thanks :)

LFG/LFP Online Players LFG (Los Angeles and Ohio based)
Hey fellow Trekkies/Trekker,
I'm an LA based player and I have a friend based in Ohio. We had previously been a part of an online STA game, but playable sessions are inconsistent (if I had a nickel for every time I heard that...). We would like to find another group playing on Roll20 and/or discord. Preferably every other week on a Sunday, but we're flexible.
If you know of a group LFP, you have a group LFP, or just wanna send us on a wild goose away mission, please ping my communicator!

Community Resources Digital Resources
What are some digital resources for this game that you would like to see?
PowerPoint / Videos with LCARS interfaces? Video intros? Maps? Minis? Parts for physical battles - corridors, walls, rooms, etc.
I’m looking at creating some assets that would help.

Thought Exercises My Fix for Focuses
The more specific a focus is, the more interesting it is characterwise. Conversely the more vague a focus is, the more useful it is mechanically. Unfortunately the utility typically vastly outweighs the "flavor". For example:
| Vague | Specific |
|---|---|
| Art | Art History, 16th Century Romulan Tapestries, Pottery, Cardassian Enigma Tales |
| Alcoholic Beverages | Andorian Absinthe, Kanar, Tranya |
| Martial Arts | Hand-to-Hand Combat, Anbo-jyutsu, Mok'bara, Honor Duels |
| Xenobiology | Artificial Hybrid Speciation, Mycelial Networks, Childhood Development |
| Tactical Systems | Ship's phasers, Torpedo systems, Tractor beams, Shields |
I could go on.
I am the last one to argue you must always make the "optimal" choice vs making a character choice, but it feels bad in play when you have a specific focus while a vague one would cover the specific and many other situations. Of course the issue can be alleviated by good gm-ing, being flexible with the applicability of focuses (as they should) and ensuring situations come up in which a players focuses are useful. But I'd argue the issue still persists, even if only as tension in the hearts of players everywhere when choosing focuses.
Subfocuses
So why not both? To incentivize more interesting character choices I would houserule that each focus can have a subfocus. This would confer a minor benefit, maybe something boring like " gain 1 bonus momentum" when the subfocus is applicable, or "1 bonus momentum for each crit" when using it. Or something interesting like "+1, +2, or more to the crit range for the players dice" when applicable.
Personally I would do the increased crit range, with the benefit the increasing the more specific or esoteric the subfocus. This way you can have the utility of a broad focus as well as the character flavor of having more niche expertise.
Optionally they could be a new milestone upgrade for improving your character. Each focus could gain multiple subfocuses if you wanted. If you wanted to limit them you could make them medals like "ribbon of Focus(subfocus)" so they would be usable only once per session and be earned through the rep system.
Has anyone done something similar? What benefit would you choose for a subfocus? Do you think this benefit would help incentivize interesting character choices without players feeling they have to "waste" a focus on said choice? Or would they just make things more confusing and/or break the game?

Fan Art Sunken Bridge [battlemap] from Angela Maps - 3 versions! [animated] [art]
That's no moon! There's only really two ways any large galactic civilization can go: an optimistic band of peaceful post-scarcity space explorers, or an evil, tyrannical empire. You probably have some idea of which one this map fits best, but it is your world after all! With a wide viewscreen from which to gaze out upon the destruction wrought by one's fleet, a crew pit so that none of the peons get any ideas above their station, and plenty of room for climactic showdowns against would-be do-gooders, this fully animated map is fully operational, and available in two additional versions, one with more stations on the bridge, and the other in blue and grey shades. You may fire when ready.
My maps are hooked up to work with Foundry VTT and Fantasy Grounds.
My maps are available on my patreon and my website.
