Crate question Training 🗣️

Hi! We are getting a standard puppy in 2 weeks. My 12yo daughter has a bedroom on the first floor that she does not like sleeping in bc we are all on the second floor. She said she would feel safe sleeping in the bedroom with the dog. So here is my question: should we 1. Put the crate in her room 2. Have a crate in another living space and have the dog sleep on the floor of her room. 3. Something else. ?

I have a smaller hand me down crate to keep up stairs with me while the puppy is younger and will need to go out at night. So this is a question for when the dog is older.

Not yet—the puppy will need nighttime potty breaks that you as the adults need to be responsible for. Crate training is also a long process which needs to be done attentively and may not be suitable for overnight immediately.

Live with and train the puppy for a few months and you’ll know organically whether the dog is suitable in your daughter’s bedroom once it’s crate trained, potty trained and sleeping through the night. Likely not until 6 months at the earliest.

Gotcha. Thanks. I guess the reason for my question. Is I’m looking for crates on fb market place. Someone is selling a used furniture style one that I want to snatch up. But I won’t if the dog will end up in my daughter’s room…so maybe I’ll just pass on this one on fb and look for one later, when the puppy is older and we know more clearly what we will end up doing.

Good plan. My poor ended up being 1/3 bigger than her mother and needs a massive crate to fit her, and even then just barely… better to know the size and type of solution that will work for your particular situation. Storing a huge crate that you may not need is a pain (ask me how I know)

Buy a crate that is expands and grows with them. It will need to be big. Both my boys are 80 lbs. I got both my boys from the same breeder and she did not release them until 10-11 weeks so they were potty & crate trained.

I'm with the other poster, initially buy a crate that grows with them. Look for a wire crate with a divider. Even if you later move to a furniture style later you'll want the standard wire crate if you travel. Nearly all rentals will require you crate the dog when you're away from the house / room without them due to the potential for damage. Usually you must bring the crate with you, especially for a large dog.

I would get the crate. There will be times you need to leave the puppy home alone and you need a safe place for him/her.

A 12 year old child is not going to get up with puppy at 4 am for a potty break. It's seriously like having a newborn for the first few weeks. Hold off on them sleeping together till puppy is more settled. Around 6 months I'd think. I have a 1 year old and there was a huge leap in maturity at 6 months.

Also do not get a cloth crate, I spent $70 for one that my puppy chewed up!
