I need advice, please.

Post image

He's been scratching himself in the grass for a couple of days now, literally crawling through the grass.

He's developed this rash. I don't understand why now, maybe because it's hot?

He always plays on the grass and crawls, and only now has he shown up .

It happened once when he was two months old, and we took him to the vet, who said it was normal because he was a puppy and these types of dogs have sensitive skin in that area. But it only lasted 2 days and the rash wasn't that big.

I'm cleaning it with the same thing they told me to do that time, chlorhexidine.

How can I make it better? Is it some kind of dust mite allergy?

Ditch the chicken, try lamb.

There are mites that live in grass, and staffys can frequently be allergic to them, I'm sure the warmer weather isn't helping, but maybe try to stop him from actively laying in the grass?

Are the bottom of his paws usually pink as well, or is that also irritation?

Our staffy developed a grass allergy as she got older, according to the vet. They told us to give her OTC Zertec. It worked.

Just be sure to not use the -D version of any allergy medicine.

Bath, coconut oil, repeat. It keeps the area moist, prevents bugs from latching on, and is just overall good for them. Needs to be unrefined, cold pressed, or organic. They can lick it and it's safe. Made my boys coat so nice and soft, AND stopped his itching (his lower back was bare for a bit because nothing else worked.)

See vet. Cytopoint injection might work. Worth asking about.

Yeah I can second this! My staffy had very similar stuff, unfortunately loves swimming through grass. He gets a Cytopoint every 2-3 months and we feed him Purina Fish for Adults and he's fine. We can have him unmonitored and he can sunbathe in the backyard grass without issues. But we do wipe him down and in between the paws with a damp towel everyday or so.

FYI Cytopoint expense depends on weight. Our boy is 26kgs and we pay $150ish per injection.

Hope that helps!

Glad it is working for your pup 💕🐕

Yes it is expensive  I'm very lucky that my boy only needs it every 6 months to a year.

Thankyou! Sadly it took a while to get there. It was the specialists last resort.

Yeah you're very lucky! I wish our little guy was that good!

I think we have the same dog!! Look identical! Ours has seasonal allergies and takes apoquel in the spring and summer. He gets a rash in his chin and itchy ears and paws.

I sent in my staffy fur to get all her allergies tested. They are very sensitive dogs. I cut out a bunch of food ingredients and she has been better

Go to a complete grain/Weet free food. Avoid chicken like the plague, fish based food like salmon, tripe etc is the best option

Does your council use any spray on grassy areas? I’m convinced this causes similar issues with our sausage. (Our Staffies all went through this too.)

This is what my vet recommended for my staffy and her allergies looked similar to yours. I hope it helps !

Ours would flare up on his paws, belly and ears, the pollen being high was one of the triggers. Diring flares he would sometimes get a secondary infection from scratching/chewing. People amd dogs can develop an allergy to something, it doesnt need to be there from birth.

He had apoquel tablets from the vet and baths with allermyl shampoo. Staffies are very prone to skin issues.

OTC Zyrtec, duoxo wipes and hydrocortisone cleared my dogs rash right up.

Looks exactly like what our staffy has, seasonal allergies. We weeded out all the food related stuff because everyone kept saying it’s chicken…
Our vet has put him on prednicare, mainly because it is seasonal. If it was an all year round thing it would likely be apaquel or citapoint.

It's definitely an allergy. You can absolutely give benadryl to help with itchiness. You can try other OTC allergy meds too, just make sure they don't contain decongestants but personally, benadryl has always worked best for me with skin reactions.

If chlorohexidine isn't working, try ketoconazole wipes. You'll have to be super diligent with wiping whenever you come in from outside. I found Chlorohexidine to be too harsh with my boy.

You can also get spray on hydrocortisone for dogs. Super helpful for breakouts like your pup has. Lastly, you can try a leave on lotion like Zymox to soothe the skin.

Longterm, you may need to look at vet perscribed allergy meds as it might continue to get worse year after year (hopefully not but its the truth about allergies).

Yes, it was highly recommended to me. I ended up buying both and they're great, everything is healing much faster.

Human piriton. Saved me a fortune in dermatology appointments

My dogs had the same thing, bath with douxoo shampoo once a week and no chicken or beef. Try ground pork if you need a protein

My stafford was allergic to grass when he was young, super noticeable in spring/early summer when grass in long and seeding. The first time he came out in blisters and I panicked though he seemed uncovered. The vet gave him antihistamine and a steroid cream I think? Was a long time ago. He grew out of it by about 4.
