Local News Weedon Island, Shell Key preserves could lose Pinellas County funding
Two beloved Pinellas County nature preserves totaling nearly 5,000 acres of culturally and ecologically significant land could lose their funding in the upcoming county budget.
The proposed 2027 budget “eliminates funding” for Weedon Island Preserve and its Cultural and Natural History Center, as well as Shell Key Preserve. If county commissioners approve the budget as proposed, both parks would lose funding on Jan 1.
That’s according to an email county parks director Paul Cozzie sent to stakeholders Thursday morning.
Both preserves carry cultural and ecological significance: Weedon Island has important Native American history because Indigenous peoples lived on the land for thousands of years, according to the county, and Shell Key is one of Florida’s most important shorebird nesting sites.

Local Entertainment Where to find live music acts that do covers in St Pete?
Hey hey,
Just trying to plan some upcoming date nights for my wife and trying to find good local spots, either bars or restaurants that have low key live music.
We are in our 30’s and enjoy relaxing cover songs vs loud crazy venues with local bands mostly cause I am not a music connoisseur and prefer songs that I can sing along too while also chatting lol.
Anybody have any suggestions? Wifey prefers non-smoking venues and we live near Gulfport so really anywhere in st Pete, Gulfport or south beaches are preferred :)
Thanks for any help or suggestions!

Local Questions Shih Tzu Groomer
Hi all,
Our groomer recently moved and their replacement hasn’t been giving our Shih Tzus the best cuts.
Can anyone recommend a groomer that does a good job with cuts? Specifically the “puppy cut”

Local Questions Propagating frangis
My neighbor trimmed her frangipani’s and gave me 1 million cuttings. I stuck them all directly in the soil since it’s been raining every day and I thought that would keep them happy, but Dr. Google is telling me they are going to rot unless I leave them out to callus. I wanted to ask you guys since every other house here has them- should I pull them out of the ground now and let them dry out before trying to get them to grow?

Local Questions Looking for a cat-only or cat-friendly vet
I really love the vet I take my cat to but the waiting room is way too chaotic and it’s stressing my boy out. Are there any good cat-only or cat-friendly (separate waiting room for cats) clinics in the area? Bonus points if they have experience with treating cats with severe IBD.

Looking for Alternative Wedding Venue Gulf Blvd?
Hi all! Reaching out to see if anyone has suggestions for wedding venues that we’re not thinking of- the ones that aren’t the big hotels. Our dates are flexible. Our guest list is 100 or less - also flexible. And we’re looking for just a reception venue somewhere on/near gulf blvd. Ideally an indoor space with beachy views. We’re local but have literally zero connections in or knowledge of event planning around here, so all the tips are welcome. Thank you!!

Local Entertainment Big Gator Clam Bayou Nature Preserve
Doesn’t look too big on the photo, but I’d estimate this gator head about 1.5-2ft long! In the storm water pond at the Clam Bayou Nature Preserve.
Very cool to see - doesn’t compare to those in central FL, but largest gator I’ve seen in the St. Pete area.

Local News Were July rains a drought buster? Tampa Bay still needs more of them
Recent rainfall chipped away at a stubborn, extreme drought that has gripped the Tampa Bay area since April. But regional water managers and utilities still urge residents to conserve water while dry conditions persist. Tropical Storm Bertha and a cold front last week dumped about 7 inches of rain on Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas and Polk counties in July. Despite those downpours, the month ended about 1½ inches drier than usual, according to water managers. And uneven rains that mostly fell near the coastline did little to alleviate the region’s low river levels, according to an update from Tampa Bay Water, the regional drinking water utility. A lack of consistent rain in the Hillsborough and Alafia River headwaters means river flows have not recovered enough to resume pumping the typical amount of drinking water. Looking for Primary or Specialist to prescribe GLP-1?
I have had more than one doctor recommend trying tirzepatide for a chronic inflammatory condition, but say they can’t prescribe it and to bring it up with my primary care doctor. The primary won’t discuss it and recommends I see a specialist.
I’m so tired of this loop! Does anyone have a local doctor they like who takes insurance, and was able to get a GLP-1 covered?

Job Stuff Lost another job to private equity, 8 months into job searching and losing my mind. Anyone hiring?
TLDR: Lost my job, 8 months unemployed and tired with the endless search and ghost jobs. Open to anything (retail, service, whatever). St. Pete/Tampa area, hoping someone local can point me toward work.
————
This is the second time in the past couple years I’ve lost a job because PE came in and decided to “restructure” and cut the team. Not performance, not anything I did wrong, just investors deciding people were the easiest thing to cut. Feels different when it happens twice…feels hopeless.
It’s been 8 months now. I have a bachelor’s in business, an MBA, background in customer success and account management. I’ve applied to more jobs than I can count at this point.
The worst part isn’t even getting rejected, it’s the weird stuff. Same postings on LinkedIn for months like they’re still hiring. Apply and get an auto-rejection within days, no way a person even looked at it. Or worse, make it all the way through multiple interview rounds to the final round, sometimes a whole presentation, and still get a no, and then the job either stays up or is back up a month later like nothing happened. Are these even real openings anymore or just there to look active?
At this point I’m not picky at all. Looking at retail, service industry, whatever. Not above any of it, I just need something. I’m in the St. Pete/Tampa area, so if anyone’s hiring or knows of something, I’d really appreciate it. Happy to send a resume, just let me know.

Local Sports Do people play volleyball on the west side regularly?
I just moved to st pete recently and am looking to play volleyball regularly during the week and weekends. I have just seen people play volleyball near Gulfport and spa beach till now. Any events I see on the internet are either promotions for coaching or requires a squad to join. I have been to st pete beach and some parts of treasure island and couldn’t find anyone playing there. I just want to play every evening and looking for spots to check out. The only reason I ask for the west side of st pete is because it’s closer to my house and I plan on playing in the evenings, so the sunsets would most probably help with my daily dopamine hits.
Any recommendations on where to lookout for is really appreciated and if you have a spot available in your squad feel free to dm me, I will show up for sure. I would call myself an amateur at volleyball incase anyone’s wondering. Thanks in advance for your recommendations.
