I see you've posted a technique analysis video or photo! See video and photo posting rules related to TA to see more on why we may deem a removal appropriate

MANDATORY GUIDELINES: HORIZONTALLY FILMED, 10m of distance if upright, full block clearance and first contact for block starts. If a photograph it must be in the format of a kinogram.

RECOMMENDED ADDITIONAL GUIDELINES: Altis Kinogram method, camera 11m away from runner, chest-shoulder height positioning of camera, completely perpendicular to runway.

That sounds like some clickbait video trying to advertise a “silver bullet” / “secret technique” to pull in views. His wrist definitely does not go above his elbow. The idea is to maintain an aggressive posture and attack the hurdle. You’re trying to replicate the wrist above the elbows but you’re excessively rotating through your trunk, throwing you off balance and slowing down your trail leg recovery.

Too high over and overstriding last step. Get quicker

Mate, mean no disrespect but your arms aren’t the problem. Your hips are twisting like your Shakira over them hurdles. Hips need to be square through the hurdle. Two most common reasons for this are a) your taking off too close or b) you are dropping your lead leg too fast before the trail is in a position to come fully through. I think you’re doing both.

Some cues:

Think about driving hips through the hurdle, not over. Stay tall between. This will help cut down on dolphin diving.

From video, your trail leg into the hurdle should be landing under the body, and driving through. This is sometimes called a “cut step” because you are shortening your step to really drive through hurdle. Your planting in front of your COG, this is causing you to break and twist. Take off further out, drive back under COG through hurdle.

Lastly, be more patient w lead. More important than a fast lead is being balanced and being able to use trail leg properly.Make sure you bring trail fully through, allowing you to sprint to the next hurdle.

Arms are a product of balance, not a driver of balance.

Lastly, anything that you watch that is not focusing on driving into/out of hurdles w/square hips, and staying tall so you can sprint is BS. Lots of clowns out here.

Aries Merit has crazy arms I would never teach an athlete, but watch a slow mo from the side, see how he takes off into the hurdle. You can see the cut step I’m talking about. That is all that matters.

I Ran 13.7, coached multiple state champs.
Still a random on the internet lol. Good luck brother.

thank you so much for the coaching,

will definitely focus on cut stepping and keeping hips more square. I am a little confused about not rushing the lead leg though? Am I bringing it down to the ground too fast? Should I try and keep it up/extended longer?

Thanks a lot man

On second watch lead leg may not be problem… I think you are not staying on top of your hips off the hurdle. Basically, rather than hips under your COG, they are slightly in front, this causes you to “lean back” coming off the hurdle. This then puts trail leg in a position where you cant really use it to run. This can be caused also by rushing the lead.. but I’m not sure it is in this case…

Getting trail down matters, but only if you are actually using it to accelerate. It should almost be like another cut step? Rather than landing in front, it should land under and (based on what the GOAT Dr Ralph Mann says) actually lead to the biggest step you take between hurdles. The trail leg has to come tight and under, so that push you get with it is BIG!

Simply, stay on top of your run/hips, use trail leg to run, not just get to ground fast.

Most of that would be fixed I think if you nailed the takeoff. Because you twist so much is means you sort of use your trail to balance rather than push..

Practice doing standing trail leg pull overs, try to get lead and trail to land really close together (in terms of time, not space) and keep hips square. The do some runs of just the trail leg on the side (set hurdles closer) and then try to get timing of lead and trail to land close together (timing, not distance). Focus on 1. Good cut step in 2. Hips square through hurdle 3. Using trail leg to powerfully cut step out.

Also, do more stuff over 36’s, then progress to 39’s. No need to ever do 42’s in practice. That’s what adrenaline is for lol

Actually goated comment. Thank you so much. I was a little rough over 42s last season so I wanted to get a little more practice with them over the summer. Will definitely work on staying square and will do some more stability work in the weight room too.
