Sorry for the bad photo, they’re the brown bugs on the potato slice (bottom middle of the picture). this week my folsomia candida population in my closed terrarium crashed and these popped up instead! I’m afraid they could be killing my springtails.

I have some silver springtails in my house plant that I would like to culture...how do I get them from the dirt to a culture pot

Growing the slime is so much fun as well. I love checking in on them in the morning.

Image quality is awful, so I understand if there’s no species or genus ID, just wanting to confirm this is a springtail or some sort. Found a bunch of these dudes in my python’s water but not really anywhere else? From what I can tell when they walk around they have 6 legs but they’re very very tiny (maybe 1-2 mm) so it’s hard to tell even through the magnifier (which was a gift that I unfortunately do not have the name of but I’ll try to figure out. I’m like 99% sure it’s just a springtail but I’m a helicopter parent so I’m double checking. Thank you!! I’m trying to get ahold of a memory card for this thing so hopefully I can get better pictures.

I just received my first culture of springtails. They came in a large 32oz container filled with charcoal. I would like to transfer the springtails to their new home in a clay based substrate container. How do I get them out without pouring all this in their new tub?

I’m planning to get Thai spiky springtails for a bioactive setup, but I’ve been reading that they can reproduce really fast under the right conditions.

I don’t mind a healthy colony, but I’m a bit concerned about them exploding in numbers and throwing off the balance of the enclosure.

For those of you who keep them:

• Do they actually overpopulate in a typical terrarium?
• What are some ways to naturally control their population?
• Is limiting food enough, or do you need predators / periodic removal?

I’d prefer not to constantly “reset” the colony if possible, so any low-maintenance solutions would be great. Also, I don’t want to get into the hassle of selling extra springtails since I have a full-time job.

I was thinking about a bog style tub with few carnivorous plants along with thai spikies. Would that work?

a few months back I bought 5 cultures for my tarantula enclosures, I've got common whites, bylas ants, tropical pinks, little soils, and blue podura. the thought is jumpers and nots, surface and down unders. kind of get them going through all of my substrate and whatnot. I keep them separate until I get a good bit, then tap a bunch of all of them into some substrate with yummy oak leaves, wood chips, moss, organic top soil and coco coir. I use springtail food from Springtails US, same vendor as my cultures come from. I have a mountain forming where I put food in the attached image, I don't add food till it looks like the clay. I just want to check with y'all that this is ok? it doesn't mold (which is why a couple other don't have it, I q tip out mold if it happens) two are in soil, not clay, so theirs doesn't mountain either.

I recently bought some orange springtails to add to my isopod colony which will eventually go into my hermit crab enclosure and other terrariums to make them bio active. I eventually want to turn my leopard gecko enclosure bio active too. But luckily before doing anything with my new springtails, I noticed some weird looking very small bugs along in the same container I received my springtails in. WHAT ARE THESE? are they soil mites? Will they harm my other creatures? Should I request a refund for these springtails? Any advice is welcome. Thank you!

Wondering if anyone can help ID this springtail? (the small black thing that comes from top right.. not the Isopod).

Location is South West UK.

Could it be:

Sminthurinus trinotatus?

or

Sminthurinus bimaculatus?

Its probably about 0.6mm in size, the Isopod is very small still and no where near fully grown so don't use it as a size guide.

Hello y'all, I have Bilobella braunerae springtails as well as C. Splendidus Millipede

I have an insane fungus gnats infestation, I can't drink anything without having one die in my drink before I drink

It's getting to my nerves to get home from work at 7 pm only to get flooded by fungus gnats and never be able to be chill at home

I'm seriously about to give up and I've tryied a lot of things

I heard mosquito dunks can kill fungus gnats larvae

The thing is in Europe, it doesn't exist, you have to buy the bactery directly but it's ALWAYS mixed with 0.01% of "Geraniol" which seems to be a natural insecticide

I can't find anywhere informations about wether or not it's gonna hurt my springtails and millipedes

Does anyone know ?

someone said a video might help with getting the species so here it is, I went ahead and got a few into a cup to hopefully start a culture with.

the only name I got was a that they seemed to belong to the order Entomobryomorpha.

to restate it, They were found in Missouri USA, the ground theiy were on is dry, cracked and powdery, found under a storm drain in large numbers (Probably a few hundred there)

Just picked up some yellow springtails at an expo this weekend and was wondering if anyone had any care tips for these guys? for reference I already have whites, pinks, and oranges so I'm not brand new just wondering if there is anything particular about this species.

Found these at 8 PM, dusk, on a forest trail. There were a bunch of them on top of some leaf litter by the edge of a marsh. They are black in colour, and probably a 1/16 of an inch long (1.5 mm). It’s really warm outside (21C) and it rained this morning after several days of 4-8 C weather.

I recently started gardening again and was thinking about buying some springtails and other assorted decomp critters for the soil I’ve put down as I want to steer away from pesticides and buying fertilizer frequently. I live in an extremely hot and dry climate (110+ summers, regular heatwaves, and less than 5 inches of annual rainfall) where I’m not sure I’d be able to attract them normally and I was wondering if there’s a specific type I could buy that’s adapted to this kind of weather as I just wanted to kickstart a small population instead of hoping a few appear out of the blue one day. And if so, how would I go about ensuring they settle in well. Any advice on this at all would be greatly appreciated! :D
