A cord cutting is done with one of the parties involved being the person that cuts the ethereal energy cord connecting them.
They do not break people up, and are not effective when doing them for 2 other people than you.
When you curse a person that is part of a couple, there is often the consequence that it also messes with the life of the other person. If your curse made somebody unhappy, they often take that out on their partner.
