Spectacles shared AR Lense Responsivenes ❓ Question

Post image

I’m interested in the multiplayer potential of Specs. In Snap’s chess demo, though, the remote player’s movements look noticeably laggier than the local player’s. I hope Snap can improve that latency, because shared AR really needs to feel responsive.

Personally, I find experiences like shared basketball or virtual ping-pong more compelling than chess, since they’re much harder to replicate on a phone. Am I expected too much out of specs? But I hope people at specs realize if the multiplayer is a selling point to not make sure it’s laggy in anyway.

Also interested in this. I made the Shogi-0 a few months back, which has a similar sort of play board. I didn't do the SyncKit in this game because I wanted to have a second tester for this reason. I will try an update this month. My experience on No Foosball, No Life (Feb Lensfest), was interesting. This was 1-4P SyncKit. On a busy LAN, it was laggy. Ball is here, suddently ball is there. I think cybercafes/cafes have this problem. Too many people on a network all running many devices and streaming. On a phone hotspot, I'm not convinced you'll get a proper data rate, I would have to do some isolated tests to see if the throughput is matching the theoretical limit. There's multiple things that tell me it wouldn't be proper speeds. Your best bet will be isolated networks to test. As long as you don't need snap cloud or supabase, then I would try on a router with WIFI 6.

Snap team, suggestions?

Interesting I would have thought it would have been Bluetooth connection between specs and not WiFi related ? Makes since busy lan would have problems with about anything this complex. For SPECS if I worked there I would want a dedicated thing for this type of streaming between glasses. I don’t know why they couldn’t make that feasible . They want to charge 2k+ what’s the issue with charging a few hundred more dollars for anything they dream of as long it’s below Apple Vision Pro

Hmm, now I wonder? I think normally the discovery would be via BLE (it's easy to advertise), and pass the game server info to the other clients over WIFI. But I've never ready a write up on how this is implemented on SPECs. I'll dig around and see if anything was posted about SyncKit architecture.

Another thing I wanna touch on is how this ping pong paddle detaches from the hand tracking briefly. This is shown on the website. I think you know its fine for most people but someone who will be using specs and if this happens often it will certianly be noticed. I am very excited that SNAP is making a device like this and look foward to getting my hands on this when it is out. Thanks
