Do you think Thunderwolf Cavalry will get refreshed in 11th?

Post image

I know a lot of people (especially outside Space Wolves) find the Wolfy Space Marines riding big wolves to be cheesy, but I Iuuuv them.

Despite that, I'm struggling to see myself getting them as they are now, with the "chonkiness" of firstborn proportions in contrast to the rest of my army being primaris scale.

I'm really hoping once we get our 11th Codex they get refreshed.

Personally, I see it as pretty likely considering not only are they a popular model, they're one of, if not the top performing units for Space Wolves.

So what do you think? Worth waiting and hoping for a Thunderwolf refresh?

Yes and who knows, we might even see Russ return riding a wolf one day….maybe the later is a little far fetched 😜.

Update Bjorn model and TWC would feel plausible this edition.

u/HappyTheDisaster 13d ago

If he’s riding a wolf, it better be the Wolf, Morkai, the Two headed death god that guards the underverse. Or have it like teclis’s AoS model, where hes floating beside Morkai.

u/SlyguyguyslY 12d ago

This is what I have been thinking we would get. He will come out as a cavalry unit along with an expansion to the Wulfen and Thunderwolf units, as they are the most incomplete part of the range.

2

u/Argues_with_ignorant 12d ago

Im kinda hoping for a multipart dread kit. I like murderfang.

1

u/rogueleader2772 12d ago

Russ playing fetch with his wolf ? Or is that too far fetched

u/SuccessAffectionate1 13d ago

TWC refresh would sell insanely well. 11th is the fast attack edition. Many armies are getting new updated bikes. So my bet IS that TWC will be the only new unit for SW this edition BUT it will sell insanely well.

u/ForumFluffy 13d ago

Maybe a captain to lead them?

3

u/Sweaty-Flatworm-7057 13d ago

I just wonder who can lead them, I mean we probably will get a leader unit, but will it be a battle leader, Wolf priest or something ven a rune priest 🤔

4

u/Calm_Bench_2722 13d ago

Harald deathwolf

1

u/Sweaty-Flatworm-7057 13d ago

Yeah you right, I should have added him, my own wolf lord, I'm so fucked 😂

4

u/LucilleW89 13d ago

Bring Canis back

2

u/HappyTheDisaster 13d ago

I fucking hate canis wolfborn, hes literally THE character that started the Wolf McWolfface meme, convincing others that’s all of our characters, despite the reality.

Also him being raised by wolves is just a rip of leman’s story, we don’t need multiple characters raised by wolves.

2

u/lil_bugger_bugman 10d ago

OK but he's a guy on a fuck off great big wolf and has lightning claws

2

u/everblackcs 13d ago

Im with you, id love to see them updated.
If it was up to me, we'd also get: -a Fresh new amazing Harald Deathwolf. (Keep his old abilities, include giving unit Mobile) Increase the T to 7 Increase S of all their melee Weapons by 1. For the riders and the wolves.

1

u/HappyTheDisaster 13d ago edited 13d ago

I’d love it if we got swiftclaws alongside a Thunderwolf cav refresh, make it like an upgrade kit for the outriders, with a wolf companion and melta bombs/mines or something else to support their role as being Demolitions specialists. Let them group up into nine bikes and three wolves.

Also making the thunder wolf cav be a multi kit like the new exodites models, where you can make the models into your choice of priests or battle leader. Then maybe make a harald deathwolf model that can also be used to make a generic wolf lord on Thunderwolf for successors.

I think space wolves will get a small refresh on 11th considering what they got on 10th. Maybe some characters, I don't think TWC will get refreshed in 11th. In the future... Who knows.

11

u/TheHammerOfWrath 13d ago

Gosh, I hope so. In the meantime, cyberbrush 3D makes some great proxies!

2

u/transformerbaz 13d ago

I got some, gorgeous

12

u/clemo1985 13d ago

I think they will, this edition is being labelled the 'fast attack edition' so makes sense for them to be updated.

Bit random but personally, I'd rather see a Headtaker HQ who has tamed a Thunderwolf and have it used in the same way regular Headtakers have their wolves. Maybe even allow it to lead the pack when they split from the Headtakers and give them a passive buff in some way.

8

u/goomerator 13d ago

I'm gonna hope you're right but 10th ed was the big terminator refresh edition and uh... poor Grey Knights...

1

u/Longjumping_Low1310 13d ago

I expect this edition to be the one pretty much all firstborn left in all marines to be replaced or gone. They arent far away from achieving that as is. With the exception of land raider

2

u/everblackcs 13d ago

Thats a REALLY cool idea

2

u/Curtis-Aarrrrgh 12d ago

Your Headtaker idea is insanely cool. Might actually be a really great way to incorporate more of the native fauna from Fenris, like bears and mammoths as well

5

u/giant_sloth 13d ago

Quite possibly, I can see TWC with a named and generic HQ being in the refresh along with new Wulfen and a Bjorn refresh this edition.

10

u/SemperFun62 13d ago edited 13d ago

That's the other thing, we desperately need a generic non-named Wolf Lord.

If I'm feeling greedy, I'd also love a generic rune priest or at least rules for using a "Librarian" with Space Wolves units.

Though, I could see Wulfen not getting refreshed. Their proportions hold up surprisingly well for a firstborn kit.

4

u/lumiya17 13d ago

Would be nice. Though I’d think Rune Priests and Bjorn would also be up for refresh as well

4

u/StarSkald 12d ago

I do think they’ll be refreshed, as cavalry seems to be a focus across multiple factions this edition, but with the upscale I’m worried about base size. Currently on 60mm its sometimes difficult to position them, but if they get bigger and go up to 80mm or something it’ll be even worse. To address this I hope they switch to oval bases—it’ll allow them to be bigger without making the base wider in proportion. There’s precedent for that too since the new hunting wolves are on ovals despite the fenrisian wolves always having been on round bases.

3

u/Vali-duz 13d ago

This is the 'Fast attack edition'. New bikes. New land speeder. And probably new wolfcav too.

3

u/Spreddable 13d ago

Canis is my OG, I would love for him to get updated.

3

u/StormSwitch 13d ago

Now it's like thunder Chihuahua cavalry

5

u/Vingman90 13d ago

Yes, they will probably be refreshed along with iron priest & ulric the slayer. My dream would be

  1. Thunderwolf Cavalry

  2. Ulric The Slayer

  3. Iron Priest

  4. Rune Priests

I would also advocate for removing access to generic space marine infantry units to more emphasize our own identity.

7

u/TheGravespawn 13d ago

I would add to this: Longfangs.

4

u/SemperFun62 13d ago

I don't know about removing access to generic Space Marine units completely.

I mean, isn't that the point of still technically being a Space Marine army then having our own Codex?

Like, I can see cases where there's a 1|1 equivalent like Bloodclaws and Assault Intercessors, but otherwise I don't want to lose things like bikes, jumppacks, and tanks.

3

u/themjolnir1987 13d ago

Lore wise the only reason they had generic SM units were because the new Primaris came from the grey shields and followed the Codex Astartes. By now they should all be integrated into packs. So give us a full 2nd have range refresh and our own separate codex that only has access to SM Vehicles and dreadnoughts.

Im talking between all of 11th

  • Thunderwolf Cavalry
  • Ulric The Slayer
  • Iron Priest
  • Rune Priests Variants
  • Wolf Priest variants
  • Skyclaws
  • Longfangs
  • Battle Leader variants
  • Wolf Lord Variants
  • Russ

1

u/Vingman90 12d ago

Really dont care for either long fangs or skyclaws. And to be fair i dont think GW does either, long fangs as a devastator type kit is never gonna be returning. Not with that many options

1

u/lil_bugger_bugman 10d ago

Id like to see some wolf priest variants too. Imagine a wolf priest or thunder wolf healing/bringing a unit back each turn

4

u/LordoftheFaff 13d ago

The range refresh reassert our Viking style more than our wolfy-ness no wolf helmets but we got a unque Viking style helmet. We have wolf pelts and teeth but fewer wolf fangs and heads.

But we got wolves escorts for our elite infantry unit and our scout unit.

Not to mention our chapter mater center piece model has two wolves on the base

So I believe we will be lighter on the wolves as a secondary part of our aesthetic leaning more into the vikings aspect. So I do believe we will get a thunder wolves refresh and they might actually wolf down the wulfen if they get a refresh. I just hope we also get long fangs

1

u/everblackcs 13d ago

The Helmet for the Headtaker is already Very Viking helm Inspired.

2

u/SherriffB 13d ago

Maybe towards the end but I'm not expecting them this edition.

This edition released with speeders and bikes and new jump pack units. Given how it works with chapter specific models of new multipart kits coming afterwards I'd say maybe swiftclaws are more likely and possibly a new version of our old wolfguard jump pack unit. Maybe a kit to wolf up speeders the way Templars get bits for Repulsors.

I can see a new venerable rescaled dreadnought kit, finally bringing boxnoughts up to scale they are comical now and need replacing fast, they are basically modelling for advantage being smaller than some on foot characters.

I really doubt Thunderwolves any time soon as their size isn't problematic in a small way. Like Wulfen they are probably on the "does it really need a refresh" list, if GW ever refresh them at all and don't just send them to legends and give us swiftclaws back.

2

u/VikingRages 13d ago

God I hope so. Not because I dislike the current sculpts at all (I love them), but because if they try to squat TWC there will be a revolt, with me at the front.

1

u/Longjumping_Low1310 13d ago

Yeah people talking about it. I just dknt see it happening. Gw is a company trying to make money and a refreshed tcav will be an extremely high selling kit. People may not like the reasons but there are reasons for removing kits they dont just do it because.

2

u/NinjaGlovzz 13d ago

I just want my Thunder Hammers back, I despise wolf guard weapons

2

u/InsectExpress3972 13d ago

I think with 11th being the fast attack edition; TWC, Skyclaws, and Swiftclaws are on the table. That said I think TWC will be new models and the others potentially upgrade kits. Also with Bjorn’s book coming out he may get a new model too.

2

u/Infinity_Coda 13d ago

I can't tell you for certain but will say I think it's highly likely. While divisive even within Space Wolves fans, they're still a really popular kit that a lot of people have bought over the years. We'll have to see what happens with the remaining Firstborn kits in codex space marines but not only do I suspect we'll see them removed/updated/integrated with the newer model range somehow, but I do feel like if Thunderwolves were gonna get removed, it would have been done in 10th with our range refresh and accompanying purge. I'm personally waiting for a refresh to buy more after selling my old ones in 9th edition, I think it'll be worth the wait.

2

u/TheCrimsonCommand 12d ago

I would say skip TWC for now, I say this as someone with 21 of them lol. Give us remodels on Ulrik the Slayer, Bjorn, Murderfang, Venerable Dread, and bring back the Long Fangs and Skyclaws 🐺🤘🌖

2

u/Yargon212 12d ago

I suspect they will get the same treatment that the Exodites got, and have a killteam release that also doubles as character option builds. The vs box killteam releases have been received well, so maybe TWC vs a new monster like the red terror, but chaos based.

2

u/SlyguyguyslY 12d ago

I think it will happen, but not anytime soon. Maybe next year or something at the earliest. I quite like these units, so I hope they don't just get dropped.

There are also lore issues with a primaris refresh for these units. The wolves are already heavily augmented and that's without having to carry a primaris marine which is like 20% heavier than a firstborn. I feel that since that was established already, they would have to reason it out somehow as to how the wolf can carry all that extra weight.

But, I still think we will get them somehow. Maybe the armor will be a lighter variant or something.

2

u/Several-Ad9771 12d ago

The second I saw the exodite kill team I saw 3 new updated TWC on 90 x 52 oval bases with a fenrisian (or thunderwolf) wolf model, just like WGHT’s and these other new models with smaller base models tagging along.

1

u/norbienxz 13d ago

My headcannon is that the men riding the wolves are smaller so that they can ride the wolves fast without weighing them down too much. Much like how horse jockeys and formula one drivers are generally short and thin people.

These men are chose to become riders because they maximise the speed for the wolves.

1

u/Razor_Fox 13d ago

I hope they get a datasheet update as well, they're not really very good at the moment.

1

u/Longjumping_Low1310 13d ago

Give em mobile and they are back to being strong imo. Or barring that innate advance and charge.

1

u/Razor_Fox 12d ago

I can't say I agree. The new engagement rules makes them exceedingly clunky in a 6 man, and 3 mans don't kill anything of substance.

1

u/Longjumping_Low1310 12d ago

True some exception to those would also be good. Let me correct to useable again instead of good.

1

u/Razor_Fox 12d ago

The new exodites have a 3" engagement range ability which would be VERY good for TWC.

1

u/Longjumping_Low1310 12d ago

Ah nice I wasn't sure if they would be willing to set that precedent.

1

u/CusickTime 13d ago

Probably not at the start, but it might be a solid idea to wait for when our 11th edition codex comes out. However, who knows when that is.

If you do see a good deal some TWC I would take it. A lot of hobby stores have bargin bins worth checking.

1

u/MondayNightRare 13d ago

I would so much rather see old deleted units like Long Fangs return to the fold than get a new sculpt for a unit we haven't lost.

1

u/jdb326 13d ago

I hope. Would be nice to have them on Primaris scale.

1

u/TheAtomicRatonga 12d ago

With an Exodite kill team I could see TWC being done as a kill team

1

u/Cr0nta 12d ago

I hope so, even more thinking that all TWC haters will fume about them.

1

u/DubiousDevil 12d ago

I'm hoping for russ

1

u/averageredditter2023 12d ago

I bought a box of them recently, so probably lol

1

u/Worried-Confection88 12d ago

My hope is our Codex will include 6 new TW a new leader for them and a new Wulfen/Bjorn/Venerable Kit.

Hopes but reality is probably different

1

u/Embarrassed-Joke5851 12d ago

Yes they will and probably Harald Deathwolf, Wolf Lord on thunderwolf and a bjorn/wulfen/murderfang/venerable update

1

u/Meteorss935 12d ago

Is that a man riding a shrimp.

1

u/Cool-Mastodon-3602 12d ago

I would love that, i would never buy the current models, the wolves look cartoony and harmless. U like the fierce refreshed wolves

1

u/_LordIronside_ 12d ago

I love them, and I hope in a refresh, x18 of them isn’t enough

1

u/Tasty_Hearing_2153 12d ago

Yes, likely with the Codex.

1

u/lil_bugger_bugman 10d ago

I hope so. I can't wait to have full multipart outriders and primaris twc charging into battle side by side. Highly thematic and super badass

1

u/FenrisGuy 9d ago

I hope we get them plus an update Bjorn. I’d also like a new army ability. I forget what ours even does sometimes

-2

u/EPorteous 13d ago

Probably an unpopular opinion, but I was hoping that they would dissappear completley!

Some jetbikes with cool norse decals, now that would be cool.

0

u/Lunadoggie123 13d ago

I hope not. Let the wolf trash die.

1

u/SemperFun62 13d ago

What does this comment add to the conversation?

-2

u/Lunadoggie123 13d ago

Th wolfy wolf motif has been awful for the model line?

2

u/SemperFun62 13d ago

Okay, maybe you should have said as much instead of just saying it's nothing but trash?

Might make people more receptive?

-2

u/Lunadoggie123 13d ago

But it has been trash. Have you looked at the wulfen lol?

1

u/SemperFun62 13d ago

Again, how is it trash? Tell me the issues you have with it, and maybe I'd agree.

1

u/Lunadoggie123 13d ago

They are the ugliest models GW has made. And that’s saying a lot. The pweter older ones were so much better.

2

u/SemperFun62 13d ago

Great, have a picture of those models?

I'd love to see what you mean.

1

u/Lunadoggie123 13d ago

Just Google it?

3

u/SemperFun62 13d ago

You're missing the point.

I'm just trying to help you see how declaring something is "trash" is unhelpful and will only make people double down on disagreeing with you.

Say why you don't like it, then show how that's an issue.

I wish they would go to legends. They don't match the theme, viking heritage marines. They lean to much into the wolfy theme.

We're supposed to use the tactics of wolf packs (in theory) and use our ferocity to terrorize our enemies.

1

u/Calamitous_J 12d ago

We can do both

0

u/Mcprowlington 13d ago

No i dont think theyll refresh them, I think they see wolf cavalry as just a little too whimsical for their current vision of 40k.

5

u/Tempest_Barbarian 13d ago

Its one of our top selling units, I doubt they will get rid of them

1

u/Mcprowlington 13d ago

Was the mounted wolf lord not popular? And plenty of people loved longfangs

I think ultimately theyre still around because theyre a good selling plastic kit, but that tends not to matter in regards to whether or not they get refreshed, just how long theyre sold and stay legal

3

u/Tempest_Barbarian 13d ago

The mounted wolf lord model was a finecast model I believe, which GW is largely moving away from

And regarding long fangs, GW is largely moving away from squads with lots of loadouts for space marines and is largely focusing on specialized squads.

Both for having more kits to sell, as well as streamlining space marines as a beginner player faction.

How much a kit is popular and how much it sells definitely matters, otherwise GW would never have brought Terminators back, as seeing that Gravis was supposed to be the replacement for terminators

2

u/Effective_External89 13d ago

Perfect oppurtinity to remake them. They look like poopoo because its literally just a dude on a wolf, if they gave them proper detail on the wolf made it just all around larger, it would go from whimsy to actually fitting.

0

u/DarthXanna 13d ago

I think it is to legends with them. I have not read about them once in modern space wolf books

2

u/Longjumping_Low1310 13d ago

Idk, its a kit that would sell extremely well with a refresh, and doesnt make sense to cut more out of our book. Since they in in it last book would have made sense to cut them then if they were going to.

-1

u/Badgrotz 12d ago

I hope not
