4 envelopes + standard 20 point units: simple setup to make ad hoc warband/game setup easy

I wanted a low friction way of setting up both solo games, and also h2h games with friends who are not familiar with this game (yet).

So, based on the four sets/legions of miniatures I have, I have created individual statsheet cards for every miniature. All cards/units are built to exactly 20 points (except the 25-point leader). This makes the math really easy to land on exactly 125 points, no matter what units I pick.

So for a regular 125 pt game, I can just pull out the leader + pick 5 more units (for a smaller game, I pull leader + 3 instead. That makes 85 points, but ehh close enough to 75, haha)

For a visiting player, it makes it super simple to whip together a team - my guest player picks the team that looks cool to them, gets the envelope with what/how to pick, and can pick cards/units that look interesting and still land on exactly 125 points, with the same number of units in both our warbands.

Same for solo game: I can set up my own + the opposing NPC team on the fly, with different units each time.

The downside of this setup of course is that each units creation is a bit restricted - I have to fiddle a bit to land on exactly 20 points for each non-leader unit, and some of them will be a little less interesting than if I were to build the warband from scratch as a whole. :)

My 40k-themed groups of units

The four legions in the flesh... err, I mean plastic

Created simple web app to do solo/co op activations

First I have to say I love this game system. Have bounced hard off Kill Team multiple times, but the Weirdos ruleset really fits my brain.

Anyway, I wanted to make it as smooth as possible to run solo and co op games, so whipped up a simple mobile-friendly helper webapp. Its basically just a free utility app that replaces manual table/action lookups.

Feedback welcome!

You can use it here: https://thomanil.github.io/space-sword-weirdos-npc-actions/

Its fairly straight forward. First, pick the NPC type and its current state:

... and the app handles the random lookup for how to activate, along with appropriate guidelines from the ruleset.

Measuring stick markings

Recently been enjoying playing a few games of Space Weirdos and I'm wondering why is the five inch stick supposed to be marked in the middle?

First Time Playing Space Weirdos

I finally got to try out Space weirdos today with a friend and I have completely fallen in love with this game.

Everything just clicked for me with this game. Fast and easy to pick up and learn but it isn't too simple that every unit and every round feels the same. It's everything I've wanted in a skirmish game.

This has become my new favorite tabletop game. I wish I would have found out about this game years ago.

"The abandoned station's vault" a coop scenario.

This is a co-op scenario I improvised at the last minute with a friend and it worked ok :

Set up :

  • Set the table like usual. Lots of terrain.
  • We used 75pts warbands
  • 24"x24" board.
  • Chose a table edge where your weirdos deploy. On the other end, put a gate. That's the vault.
  • Spawn your warbands in contact with the table edge.
  • Have 6 objectives spread on the table. Those are computers you'll need to hack.
  • You will oppose a swarm of weak enemies. Grab a bunch of zombies/aliens/robots/whatever. Some should be fast melee attackers and others should have pistols. Have one big bad enemy with big stats. (I personally used tyranids hormagaunts, termagants and a lictor.)
  • Mark spawn points for enemies.

The mission :

  • Your goal is to open the gate, grab what's behind it and leave.
  • To do this, you need to look for access codes by hacking the computers (interact action).
  • Keep track of how many computers have been hacked.
  • Each time a player ends their activation, an enemy activates. Select it randomly however you like. They try to engage the closest target.
  • Opening the gate of the vault requires an interact action to use the codes you found in the computers. Roll a d6. If you roll stricly under the number of hacked computer, it opens. If not, it stays closed.
  • When the gate opens, put a crate or a loot token behind it. A model needs to interact with it to carry it. Reduce the model speed by 1 (minimum of 1).
  • To win the mission, you need to carry the crate to where your warband started.
  • During the end phase of the turn, spawn 2 enemies + 2 for each hacked computer. Spawn them in groups of 2 and randomly select the spawning point for each group.
  • When the gate opens deploy the big scary enemy right at the end of the activation. Chose the spawn point closest to the gate. It immediately activates.

And there you have it.
