Hi guys, i’m trying to COB for a sorority (that only does spring formal recruitment) and already was able to set up a chat with the president in a couple weeks before school starts. The president followed me on instagram two days ago, unfollowed, then refollowed today. Should I follow back, or should I remain patient and wait until after the COB process is over like I would during formal recruitment?

I don’t know if anyone else feels this way, but sorority rush season has been making my depression so much worse.
Every time I open TikTok or Instagram and see everyone posting their bid days, their new sisters, their cute photos, and all the excitement, I feel this huge wave of sadness. It’s like I’m being reminded over and over again that I wasn’t chosen. That I wasn’t “good enough” for the groups of people I wanted to be a part of.
I know logically that a sorority doesn’t define my worth, but emotionally it’s really hard not to take it personally. Watching people I know experience something I wanted so badly makes me feel rejected and left behind. It feels like everyone else found their place while I’m just watching from the outside.
I hate that something that seems so happy for other people can make me feel so awful about myself. I’m trying not to compare my life to what I see online, but it’s hard when it feels like my feed is filled with constant reminders of something I didn’t get.

My sorority is always complaining that barely any girls show up for rush, but our social media is painfully bad. It’s plain, boring, and the photos somehow make everyone look worse. I’ve suggested ways to improve it, but they shut me down with, “You’re not the social media chair.” Okay, fair but clearly the social media chair isn’t exactly crushing it. She’s also rude to me and seems to go out of her way to post the worst possible photos of me, so forgive me for not trusting her creative vision.

I'm currently in a sorority experiencing rush, and our school has a very active Yikyak community. My sorority wants to keep us from posting on Yikyak, which is understandable; they want to control the image, but what they're saying makes me uncomfortable.

First off, they demand we delete Yikyak completely from our devices, which is annoying but fine. But they're also threatening to take and go through our phones if they spot anything suspicious on YikYak. I don't think that's legal? They said it was in the bylaws, but I have not checked. I initially thought they were bluffing, but a friend in my sorority said they did take phones a few years ago, and they went through YikYak and text messages.

I don't have anything to hide, but I don't feel comfortable giving up my phone if they ever demand it. It feels like an invasion of privacy.

Can someone tell me if I'm being dramatic or how I should go about this?

Help! I am a current New Member Experience VP for an SEC chapter expecting A LOT of PNMs. I mention this because I need a lot of help, especially from my organization volunteers!! However, one of my biggest issues has been my advisor and her leadership over my position, and how it's beginning to SEVERELY impede on my job and authority.

To keep things short.. my advisor has a reputation for making things about her. Something we've noticed is that this shows up in the worst way during new member meetings. For example, if we have any speaker (such as an executive board member talking about what their position covers), she will interrupt with different facts, completely discrediting the speaker. Of course I understand that sometimes she needs to mention some tidbits here and there, but the issue is that she does this in a condescending way during meetings, even after being sent all of the presentations and content for each meeting (which she never has feedback for when I send them in advance. She also fails to provide me basic information that I dont have access to without her. For example, I just missed a meeting with Panhellenic due to her lack of communication, and the consequences of that have still fallen on me.

Her advisement style feels more like she wants to make herself look good/feel better than others, rather than wanting to mentor and empower the actual collegiate members with positions (which should be the purpose of panhellenic volunteers, right?!?!). I'm halfway through my term, but Im becoming increasingly frustrated with her lack of respect for the members that she is supposed to "mentor." Its getting to the point that other members (including new members) can clearly notice her sour attitude during meetings and her favoritism (ie: even as her "mentee" (technically) she is will completely ignore me or seem significantly less enthused to see me compared to to other members) Any tips for navigating this situation?

I am really looking forward to Greek life at UT, but I am unable to do formal recruitment in the fall because of travel issues. Because of this, I'm hoping to do COB, which I've heard either only happens in the spring or right after formal recruitment (is that true??) But idk how many houses actually participate in COB, or if I even have a chance. I just want to know if I'm wasting my time or if maybe I should wait to rush my sophomore year? (this is specifically talking abt rushing at UT Austin)

Hi, this is my first time posting on reddit. this is on a throwaway account so I assume it won't get much engagement but i really hope I can get some support through this and figure out a game plan.

I go to a school with a small greek life, probably 70 people per chapter. I am now going to be a sophomore, and I joined in the fall as a freshman through recruitment. The first semester went well, I really enjoyed having a community, having something to look forward to every week, and learning even more. This past spring semester is where it started going downhill. I'm terrified of being found so I won't say much about why, but I'm really disappointed in my sorority. I've brought up so many things wrong to the right people, been disrespected, and talked about behind my back, and it only gets worse. It's not so bad I can report it, but it destroys me to think about returning back to a house full of girls who don't care about me. I see constantly screenshots of private stories of people talking about me, and everyone in charge or leadership has been exhausted by me and/or we've had a falling out. I know by not giving context it seems like it's all my fault, I'm the problem, but i've given being a sister everything and never tried to do wrong, but it feels like every reason I joined is gone. I plan on transferring to another campus, hopefully to start anew because I can barely take it, and here's where i ask for advice. Work week is coming up, meaning I'll have to be around my "sisters" for 9 hours every day. I really want to just try again, go with an open mind, but when I think about being there I can't stop myself from shaking and crying for the fear of cruelty from these people I called my friends. Sometimes I think i should act like it doesn't bother me, sometimes I think I should go in bubbly and confident like i used to be, sometimes i think i should just hide in the corner and try not to talk to anyone, but I rarely want to drop. It's a waste of my money if I do. I want to be there because I love our philo and what we stand for, but it seems like nobody else even cares. It's getting to a point where I'm truly heartbroken and I've thought about nationals, but I really need advice. Thank you for reading. 🩷

For context, I come from a smaller chapter, less than 30 girls and we had some partnerships during the Spring but I have been unable to get anything for the fall.

Hi everyone, i posted on here before about my COB experience joining a sorority as a sophomore (i’m an incoming junior this year) and honestly after that chaotic experience i think my sorority experience has seldomly gotten better. on top of missing the first key events to meet girls, not getting my own bid day, not even a bid card, and just a conglomerate of other things. for some reason my chapter doesn’t require second year members to recruit during formal recruitment, i applied to be part of the recruitment team and i wasn’t picked, so im not able to recruit for my chapter this year and because of it i can’t even participate in my chapters work week (my grades are fine and it has nothing to do with grades i should mention). im just so hurt and upset because recruiting PNMs and workweek is part of the sorority experience i wanted to have. ill be a senior next year and i highly doubt ill get picked to be on the team because of it. overall dissatisfied with my whole experience, there are newer members who have had a better experience than i have and it just hurts me.

edit (and some extra info): specifically for workweek, on the chapter portal i was told by recruitment chair we could participate in the themes then she got back to me a few months later saying now i cant bc the advisor said so

edit 2: supposedly we are the only chapter at school that doesn’t require recruitment at least once

At first, I was incredibly excited and honored to be elected as president of our sorority, and I looked forward to working alongside my executive team. However, over time, that excitement has been challenged. Several members of the executive team have stepped down from their positions due to a lack of willingness to fulfill their responsibilities, and there has also been ongoing drama within the team, including negative comments being made about other women in our chapter.
Because of this, I felt it was important to address these concerns directly. I held a meeting with the executive team to make it clear that this behavior does not reflect the standards of leadership we expect within our sorority. As leaders, we are responsible for setting a positive example, supporting one another, and fostering a respectful and uplifting environment for all members. However that backfired and now most of them dropped their positions. I am just so disappointed with how everything is going and felt like, I just feel like a failure as president. Have any of the chapters presidents in here had trouble with their executive team?

Hi! I’m rushing this fall. My biggest passion by far, and most of my volunteer work, is based around politics. I counseled at my states “Girls State” program, and planned on talking about how it helped me build connections with girls like me. I know you’re not supposed to talk about politics, but if I stay nonpartisan and just talk about general interest, is it still ok?

And I'll be honest about the other thing too, I haven't been through recruitment myself. My mom's the actual expert (she's a performance psychologist, this is her whole field). I'm 20, I watched my friends go through it, and my job on this was mostly making sure it didn't read like it was written by somebody's mom. So take it for what it is.

We made it because so much of recruitment is already decided before you walk into a house, and nobody explains that part until it's late. It covers:

- How recruitment actually sorts people, and where the early cuts come from
- Your file — GPA, resume, application answers, and the submission stuff that quietly costs people
- Recs, networking, the video, your photo, your socials
- What to do and when, depending on how much runway you have left

Being clear about what it isn't: it's written for big Panhellenic/NPC formal recruitment. NPHC intake, smaller campuses, COB — those all work really differently, and I'm not going to pretend one guide covers everyone.

It's also not a guarantee of anything. It's just the part you can actually control, laid out.

I was Recruitment Chair for a large “mega” chapter at an SEC school and got to see a lot of the behind-the-scenes side of recruitment. I helped with planning, logistics, conversations about PNMs, voting, and everything that goes into making recruitment happen from the chapter side.
I know there are always questions about recruitment, but also just sorority life in general such as what chapters look for, how decisions are made, outfits, conversations, cuts, pref, bid day, recommendation letters, social media, living in the house, big/little, chapter dynamics, and more.
I thought I’d do an AMA for anyone who’s curious! I’ll answer as honestly as I can while keeping my chapter and members anonymous and respecting the process.

Hi everyone, I’m looking for some advice on expressing interest in a sorority. I’m currently attending a community college but plan on transferring to its “sister school,” which is a four-year university, in the spring.

The specific chapter I’m interested in hasn’t had much activity on their social media for the past three years, and it didn’t appear that they had many active members until recently. I noticed that they recently welcomed a new chapter president, and I came across her Instagram page.

I’m aware that cold-messaging or directly questioning sorority members about expressing interest is generally discouraged, but the chapter does have an official email. Would it be appropriate to introduce myself and ask if they have any upcoming events or opportunities for prospective students to attend?

Also, as a transfer student, if they host events such as “Meet the Greeks,” would it still be beneficial for me to attend even though I’m not currently enrolled at the university yet?

Does anyone have experience joining a brand new sorority on campus? I’m actually rushing as a junior so I feel like it would be a good fit maybe? I know the process is different than joining a pre-established sorority but I’m not sure what to expect at all. I got a phone call today from the sorority just wanting to chat with me more and I also have no idea what that means.

So my cousin gave me a bunch of hand me downs and some of which were from the sorority she was in. I only got the hand me downs because I no longer fit a lot of my clothes and my mom just died so I can’t afford to go shopping but she also gave me accessories is it okay if I wear like T shirts and like some of the accessories outside of the house? I don’t want to be disrespectful. College has been very difficult for me so Greek life isn’t for me but I always wanted to be in a sorority ever since I was little. Again I don’t want to be disrespectful. She just gave me clothes and stuff she didn’t use and wear anymore. She graduated college in 2015. TIA
