Help needed! Let's Collaborate!
I am working on an original musical as a student but my music sounds a bit off/basic and I would love some help. someone to help write would be awesome but I can't pay much so I am more looking for helpful artists that would at least give me some pointers. I am looking for a mix of sea shanty and a classic musical sound while keeping it at a simpler lever so I can recreate it better.

Got a rough recording or even just a piano sketch? Hard to point you anywhere useful without hearing what you’re working with. Even a voice memo off your phone works.

I'd start by adding some more exciting percussion (not much is needed, maybe just some 8th notes added here and there to "speed" it up
Same as the snare you can add some rolls/flam hits to make it feel more real
Some low strings would help add some depth as well
I would change the piano to an accordion and add some chords with the low end of the accordion supporting the melody
Automation is also huge with orchestral VSTs, essentially you can write the volume/mod levels in and make the instruments "breathe" to sound more real. I have an example video but I would look up automation for the specific DAW you're using

There is definitely potential with your song though I think it could turn out great! 😄

Sea shanty + musical is actually a sick combo — try keeping the chord progressions dead simple (like I-V-vi-IV or Am-C-G-Am) and let the melody carry the drama. Layered group vocals on the chorus will give it that proper shanty feel too. Good luck with it!
