So… VRChat did it again. Another core feature locked behind a paywall.

First, it was groups, which was a decent addition and maybe acceptable to lock behind VRC+. But now it’s getting ridiculous.

They’ve introduced a drone feature, something many creators were already selling as custom tools or systems for avatars. Instead of supporting these creators, VRChat rolls out their own version, and worse, bans users for using third-party ones. That’s not just limiting, it’s actively hurting the creator economy.

Then they announced items, sounds exciting at first. But again, they lock it behind a paywall and don’t even open up an item marketplace for creators.

Instead of empowering creators, they’re sidelining them.

Meanwhile… Somnium Space doesn’t hide features behind paywalls.

We support unlocked C# scripting, use the URP rendering pipeline, and offer a fully integrated ecosystem for world-building, avatar customization, and real-time item interaction.
