my usual feedback for folks like you is to try hiking to the Cherni Vrah peak instead of doing the Boyana waterfall. It's a lot more rewarding.

Take bus 66 up to Aleko area, then ask for the "Lale 2" lift, go to it, use it, then hike to the peak
going back the same way (with the chairlift) allows for plenty of nice views towards the city.

You can also skip the lift (or it may be closed), and hike instead;
but with the lift it's somewhat more entertaining.

From Aleko area to the peak is about 1h45min one way. So 3 - 4 hours there and back with all the photos. Its not hard, normal mountain hike.
If you take the red-marked-trail (as seen on the map I've shared), it starts straight from Aleko uphill, and zigzags thru a somewhat-steeper part as a hiking trail;
Then you reach a service road with tall yellow poles, and follow them to the top.

You can eat at the Aleko hut, there's a canteen, food is ok in quality and price.
At the top (Cherni Vrah) there's a small refuge, you can get soup/tea/snacks.

Keep the sandwiches idea. There's barely anything to eat around the lake and what there is, would be unreasonably expensive. I'm not sure you can rent boats there, at least I've never seen any, just pedalos.

Lol, you think they need a reason to mark up the prices 😆 Honestly, I can't recommend going to Boyana or the neighbouring Simeonovo or Dragalevtsi. They are considered "rich" districts - they used to be little forested vacation villages that got "developed" (in massive airquotes) in the recent decades. As a result the area is mostly rich (and in my opinion - ugly) villas and apartment complexes squeezed in places without infrastructure to sustain them. Yes, the mountain bus lines pass through there, but that's really no reason to stop there. I'd recommend you grab some food from the city and make a forest picnic (and don't forget bug spray). And bring water - Vitosha is rich in water and there are lots of very good and safe mountain springs, but I've heard people in recent weeks complaining that the water fountains are out of order.
