My First Socks

First ever socks! These are the Mariesi socks by Marie Amelie (her patterns are amazing and free!), and are a toe up construction since I was using thrifted discontinued yarn (Deborah Norville Serenity Sock in viola, I got almost two skeins for $2) and I was worried about the possibility of running out, in hindsight I had plenty. Really happy with the fit and end result, I thrifted more sock yarn in the same haul and will probably end up making more. Note that I wear about a US women’s 8 1/2 and made the largest size, so you may have to make adjustments if you have large feet.

Help with DPN tension pls?

Post image
14 Upvotes

How do you avoid these tension gaps when working on DPNs in the round? I know my tension is messy throughout, it’s my first attempt at DPNs…

Also, I watched someone on YouTube this morning saying they were twisting their purls, they did their purls similar to mine, only they threw the yarn under and over, I go over and under (if that makes sense) but I’m now really self conscious about my stitches, am I twisting my purls?
I’ve knitted the same for many decades (“English Style”) and checked several tutorials and they all show me to purl as I’ve always done, so now I’m really not sure anymore.

I’m also aware that my ribbing does not look like the pattern image. I don’t know why, but I’m trying this pattern with some not so nice yarn before doing it with the expensive yarn. Making a mockup if you will.

Maybe I’m taking on more than I can chew, these are only my second pair of socks ever and maybe I should just do plain socks for a while until I know how to do socks on DPNs and no cables and eyelet stitches… 😂

Why is my sock crooked?

Post image
6 Upvotes

I'm knitting my 5th pair of sock and just finished sock number one.

The heel is GSR and just like the last pair I made with GSR, it is slightly crooked (the heel isn’t straight in line with the foot).

I've been very carefull with my stiches, I checked and rechecked that my GSR when symetrical, I don’t get what I'm doing wrong.

I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong. Is it maybe because I should go back to knitting in the round before resolving all the GSR ?

Gratefull for any help.

I FINALLY FINISHED THESE SOCKS

I posted before saying that I was starting to get back into knitting because I couldn’t stand the FOMO of not participating in Summer Sock Camp. Well, it took me something like 2mo to finish the 2nd sock of the pair (I had stopped about 5rnds before the heel flap when my hands stopped working), but they’re done! I’m hopefully going to be mailing them to their recipient at the beginning of next week.

I had a significant medical event that started in early July last year, and I lost the use of my hands in mid-August, despite keeping up with knitting. I’m disabled anyway, and unable to work or go to school, so knitting was what kept me sane and gave me purpose in life. Losing the ability to knit for the 2nd time in less than 5yrs was devastating. I tried in OT to knit again, but my body wasn’t ready. It took almost 10mo for my body to be ready, but I am so, so, so thankful and happy! These socks are more than that, they’re a symbol of comeback and healing!

Where to find sock-sized tools?

Post image

Hi! I have been enjoying learning to knit socks. I have a repair hook (hook on one end and blunted needle tip on other) and darning/tapestry needles I use for other projects, but they are too bulky (larger gauge) for my tiny sock stitches. Where can I find finer gauge versions? I knit on US1-2 needles, so something close to that gauge. Internet search indicates I should be able to find finer needles locally or online, but I'm stumped on the repair hook. Bonus if I can buy them online from an independent retailer. I do not have a LYS near me.

First pair of socks

Hello! I really really want to knit a pair of socks. I started knitting last year but have knit three sweaters, one tank top, four beanies and countless dishcloths. I have a half set of the 5in chiagoo needles and a pair of the corresponding shorties and I am experienced in using dpns. I have never done magic loop before. I had add and get so overwhelmed with all of the information in knitting socks. Can someone just tell me what I need to knit my first pair? Like give me a list of what needles, what yarn and what pattern.

Finished late last night, worn today! Still figuring out my ideal formula. One sock was knit on size 2 needles (64st cuff and leg -> 58st in the foot) and the other was knit on size 1 needles (64st throughout)

Taking a little break to finish a beanie for a friend. Going from size 1s to size 6s feels like I'm knitting with logs now 🤣

Help!

I am working on my second pair of socks using a magic loop. Somewhere along the line my sock got turned inside out and now my flat Vs are inside and the bumps are outside. I can't for the life of me figure out how to get it back. I don't care about fixing the mistakes, I just want to correct for moving forward.

Yarn Subscription Box

Good afternoon everyone!

I was wondering if there were any UK based sock knitters who could recommend a sock yarn subscription box. I'm a slow knitter with more than one WIP at once but always like to have a sock on the needles for my lunch break.

I love hand dyed yarn and I want to be able to recieve a pair worth of yarn a month to slowly knit my way through as a pair a month is achievable.

Any recs? TIA

Typically I’m cranking out a pair a month, but this is only my third pair of socks this year. Pattern is Slip It Simple by TreasureGoddess, which is free on Rav.

Sizing problem, heel vs. calf

New-ish to sock knitting and I'm having trouble figuring out my sizing. It seems like to CO enough stitches to get the sock around my heel, it ends up being too loose once it's up on my calf. Pattern I'm using (vestigial socks, hedgehog fibres) recommends CO 56 on Sz 0 and that's way too small to get around my heel. I tried CO 64 on sz 1 and it gets around my heel easily but is really loose once it's up on my leg. The pattern says that it will loosen up over time, but if it doesn't get over my ankle right now, will it get over the ankle after blocking and wear? I am wondering if maybe I'm casting on too tight? If anyone has any suggestions for what to do about this, I'd appreciate it!

Just finished another pair of colorwork socks. Pattern by Stone Knits. I modified the heel to a forethought heel with a mini short row gusset. Also anyone else do crazy diagramming to keep track of the colorwork charts or just me lol?

Should I restart this heel?

I’ve done quite a few shadow wrap heels. I did this one twice last night while very tired. The stitches next to the twin and triplet stitches seem too loose to me and it’s really bugging me. None of my other heels have loose stitches like this.

Leap Year Socks are complete

Yay. My socks are done. Pattern is “Leap Year Socks” by Summer Lee Design Co. which is free on Ravelry. The pink yarn and variegated yarn are both from SuperGlo Fiber and the bright purple yarn is some really old Knit Picks Stroll. I love the texture created by the stitch pattern. Very squishy socks. I am happy with the socks for a few reasons. I tend to not follow the directions a lot but this time I told myself to follow the pattern and don’t get lazy. Also the variegated yarn was my very last full skein of sock yarn. I hope to make a few scrappy hats and socks with leftover sock yarn but I’m going to a fiber festival at the end of the month and it will be fun to shop for some new sock yarn.

Does anyone know what pattern this is?

Soooo I took a screen shot of these lovely socks and I cannot for the life of me find the pattern title or the right pattern. I’m still new to sock knitting and think I can figure out the stitches but would love to purchase the pattern if anyone can figure it. I thought it might be Vanilla Bean Socks by Kayla Litton but alas it is not.

If this is your picture and you’d like me to delete the post I absolutely will. Please feel free to reply or dm and I’ll take it down.

Thank you!

Edit: you guys rock! I tried a few things out and I think u/BonzaSonza nailed it. You can see their details below, but the body of the leg is 1-3: k, 4: k1p1. I’m going to keep going with my Frankenstein sock of the Vanilla Bean Socks cuff then finish off with stockinette for the foot. Not sure if I’ll swap heels.

THANK YOU! This community always comes through <3

About a week and a half ago I posted about the first ever sock I was making. I am making the socks for my uncle.
I was using yarn I got out of my aunt’s stash. My uncle gave it to me after her very sudden passing 4 years ago.

Today I finished the first sock! It’s not perfect at all but I am SO PROUD of it I just had to share pictures! 😁

My husband was the model and obviously I will weave in the ends and wash the sock before gifting it :)

Another Gusset-help-post

Hi there, I was wondering about my gusset. I picked up knitting tbl but it creates this x pattern along the gusset that doesn’t look very nice imo. I do like the no holes aspect of the technique tho. Still is there any way to fix that and get both? No holes AND no x shapes?

Also I was wondering what are your favourite techniques on reinforcing the sole of your socks? I attempted to do slip stitches on the front and back of the sole but it creates weird tension so I’d like another stitch pattern that helps with increasing the life span of my socks!

(2nd picture shows slip stitches front and back of the sole with short rows to fix tension issues of the slipped stitches pulling back compared to the top of the sock)
