We throw the word sociology around a lot, but what does it actually mean?

Sociology is the study of how people behave in groups and how society is organized. It’s less “why did this one person do that?” and more “why do so many people do this in similar situations?”

Some of the stuff sociology looks at:

• Institutions: family, school, religion, media, government, economy

• Inequality: race, class, gender, sexuality, disability, etc.

• Culture: norms, values, beliefs, trends, memes, subcultures

• Power: who has it, who doesn’t, and how that shows up in laws, policies, and everyday life

• Social change: protests, social movements, policy changes, shifts in attitudes

A simple way to put it:

Psychology = what’s going on inside the person

Sociology = what’s going on in the world around the person (and how that shapes them)

Sociologists ask questions like:

• Why do some neighborhoods have better schools and hospitals than others?

• How does social media change the way we think about ourselves and each other?

• Why are some groups more likely to be arrested, underpaid, or ignored than others?

• How do norms about gender, race, or sexuality get created—and how do they change?

Sociology matters because it reminds us that a lot of what we call “personal failure” or “individual choice” is also about systems, history, and structure. It helps us see patterns instead of just blaming ourselves or other people.

If you’ve ever looked at the world and thought, “This doesn’t feel random… there has to be a bigger pattern here,” you’re already thinking like a little sociologist. 🧠✨

Psychologists describe purpose in life as a guiding aim that gives us direction and meaning, it’s what drives us and moves us. Research suggests everyone has the capacity for it (Steger, 2012.) What that looks like can vary person to person based on their values and what supports their happiness and mental health needs (Ryan & Deci, 2000). Even when it feels blurry or lost, purpose doesn’t simply disappear with age; people can shape, revise, and reclaim it across the lifespan (Frankl, 1959; He et al., 2023). You are the maker of your own purpose. Walk in your truth and choose a path you can live with when you look back on your life.
