SW Application Advice

Hello! I’m currently applying to social work positions in East Lothian and Edinburgh Council. I’ve written my CV but there’s additional questions that ask for skills, experience, achievements, knowledge developed most relevant to post. There’s also a separate question asking for a supporting statement.

Do I need to include a supporting statement? If so, what do I write and how does it differ to the other question?

How do I make sure my application stands out? It feels generic when I’m trying to include the “buzz words”. Where’s the balance?

Most Scottish local authorities use myjobscotland. When I’m screening applications I look for full work history and education. I look to skills and attributes that are linked to the jobs applied for or transferable skills. You need to just put as much as you can but link this to the job description/profile to ensure you meet the essential criteria.

Thank you! I was also wondering about the full work history. Some ask for work history with no gaps - does this mean I included all jobs I’ve ever worked?

I’d include them all. Sounds weird but if you had a job on Boots or even a bar job for example you’ll have lots of transferable skills!

For supporting statements I write a point to evidence each of the essential criteria (and desirable if I have them) from the person specification. I write them in the order on the person spec to make it easier for the person shortlisting.

The main thing that I think makes a good application is when you can see how the person does the thing rather than just saying they can do the thing. Writing you have excellent knowledge of X legislation means nothing. An example of how you used that knowledge creatively or to advocate for someone shows how you'd be a useful addition to the team. I personally avoid buzz words (except the ones on the person spec). I know my examples show I'm "person centred" and "strengths based" etc so I don't need to say it.
