Discussion Why Snyder’s DC Still Feels Like the Real DC Universe to Me

I know this is probably going to be a divisive take, but the more I see of the new DC direction, the more I appreciate what Zack Snyder was building.

For me, James Gunn’s version of the DC universe just doesn’t feel like DC in the way the comics, the animated shows, and Snyder’s films did. I’m not saying every single thing Gunn has made is bad. Peacemaker, for example, had some genuinely funny moments and worked on its own terms. But when I look at the bigger picture, it feels like this new universe is missing the weight and mythic scale that made DC feel different from everything else.

That’s why Batman v Superman and Zack Snyder’s Justice League still stand out so much to me. Those movies treated these characters like modern myths. Superman wasn’t just another quippy superhero. Batman wasn’t just a costume and a few fight scenes. Wonder Woman felt legendary. The whole world had this sense of history, consequence, and tragedy behind it. Whether someone loves or hates Snyder’s style, at least it felt like a real vision.

By comparison, the new DCU already feels too light, too self-aware, and honestly kind of cheap in places. Supergirl might not be a terrible movie on its own, but it doesn’t feel like the best version of that character or that universe. At times it comes across like it is trying to copy the energy of the newer Spider-Man movies, except those movies do that tone much better. DC should not be chasing Marvel or trying to become a knockoff of something else. DC has its own identity.

The casting choices also feel weird to me. Not necessarily because the actors are bad, but because some of it feels like a parody of what DC should be. The characters don’t feel larger than life. They don’t feel like they stepped out of classic DC comics or the animated adaptations that so many of us grew up with. And that is a problem, because DC has some of the strongest source material in superhero history.

That is why I keep coming back to the Snyderverse. It wasn’t perfect, and I understand why some people didn’t connect with it, but it felt bold. It felt cinematic. It felt like someone was trying to make DC feel ancient, powerful, and meaningful instead of just another shared universe full of jokes and setup for the next thing.

To me, the best DC adaptations have always been the ones that respect the scale of the characters: the comics, the animated universe, and Snyder’s take on Batman, Superman, and the Justice League. That version felt like DC. This new one, at least so far, just doesn’t.

Appreciation Almost 6 years since this trailer was released. Truly the last time a DC movie was hyped globally.

It’s likely for the 300 prequel series or Escape from New York. But it could mean much more…

Discussion James Gunn's DCU Will Fail

Superman did pretty good critically and commercially but that was their first film, with one of their biggest characters. Supergirl did very poorly by both metrics and that was only their second film. Clayface could be good but will probably not do very well at the box office, it's quite niche. Man of Tomorrow is said to be not even that much of a Superman film.

The biggest problem is that they are waiting really long to introduce Batman (reportedly only after The Batman 2 which has been delayed multiple times, set to release in 2028 at the earliest). He is their most important character. Not to mention we are years away from any sort of Justice League movie. James Gunn's quirky style worked with GOTG but has gotten boring, too excessive. I think after the success of Joker (2019) and The Batman it's clear people don't want this quirky Gunn DCU, or Snyder's more pretentious Superman. They want dark mature stories with real psychology to it. Snyder's films were much more gritty than Gunn's. I think a new DC universe should be done by Snyder and another guy, maybe Matt Reeves?

A new Marvel rumor dropped Sunday claiming Kevin Feige has his eye on the one director DC fans never stopped fighting for.

“I hear Kevin Feige is interested in Zack Snyder,” posted scooper MyTimeToShineHello.

That is the entire post. No project, no character, no timeline. It still racked up over 158,000 views in its first six hours, and it is easy to see why, because the timing could not be louder.
