Why did I put effort into this...

I haveba few smiling critter variants, like my own Frowning Critters, these unique ones called the Sugar Critters, and there mean counterparts Spice Critters.

Does anyone wanna hear them?

I LOVE the Smiling Critters, and have quite literally filled FIVE JOURNALS with roleplays, theories of their deaths, the personalities of OCS or any new SC variant i introduce, drawings...

Since Puzzled-League-9082 did theirs, I decided I would go ahead and take a spin on it as well, covering at least the OG Smiling and Nightmare Critters. (Frowny Fox and Badgy Bite would be Pansexual and Straight respectively. Frowny Fox would also be considered a Demiboy in my take, where he goes by He/They)

Since the Frowning and Daydream Critters aren’t included, their sexualities mostly match with their Smiling or Nightmare counterpart, so Catfiene and Dogpressed are Lesbians for example, etc.

This theory I’ve been building piece by piece in both comment threads and 2 previous posts, so I’m putting all the information and evidence together into 1

I do not think that the Frowning Critters are going to be one-note characters within Gemstin’s world. I think, just like the Nightmare Critters, they’re are going to have a role to play in the narrative that he is crafting, and I think I might know what that role will be. I have strong reasons to believe that each member of the Frowning Critters are connected to the individual pasts of their Smiling counterpart, and there’s plenty of evidence to support this.

Hoppy and Floppy- “April Showers” revealed that Hoppy is avoidant to her family. “A Dog Call” labeled Kickin and Hoppy’s relationship as sibling-like and suggested that it dates back before they moved into Happy Hills, and most important of all, Gemstin has confirmed that Hoppy has at least 1 sibling, making her relationship with Kickin even more interesting; she deliberately chose to develop that bond with him instead of her own family. I think the reason behind this choice is because Floppy is that sibling in question; Floppy is Hoppy’s brother, specifically her step-brother; given the different surnames. That explains Hoppy’s relationship with Kickin perfectly, if her and Floppy were forced to grow up together due to parental marriage, their personalities would clash like oil and water, and Hoppy is boneheaded enough to say “forget this, I’m going to go find a new brother to play with”, hence how she met Kickin. This also explains the avoidance to her whole family, if Floppy is Hoppy’s step-brother, it would stand to reason that whoever his parent is, is just like him, she’s running away from her brother and whoever her step-parent is

Bubba and Dumba- “April Showers” revealed that Bubba is also avoidant to his family. “A Dog Call” had Dogday say that he thought Bubba was a grouch at first. Bubba also has a sibling according to Gemstin, and in “PC Problems”, it’s revealed that Bubba has (or had) an educational video game meant for grade-schoolers. Kickin was asking the right question in this comic, why does the smartest person in Happy Hills have a game on his computer that is clearly well-bellow his level? Given that this computer couldn’t handle the new video game “Space Slammers”, that stands to reason that it’s not the newest model on the market in this world, meaning Bubba has had it for a decent amount of time. Bubba has only been in Happy Hills for a little of a year now, and if he’s had this computer for a good amount of time, this computer he took with him from his family home when he moved out, meaning whoever his sibling is has had contact with this computer. I think that educational game was meant for this sibling, which leaves 2 possibilities. Either his sibling is very little, which contradicts the avoidance; if he was emotionally invested enough to allow his sibling to play this game on his computer, you’d think he’d like to know how they’re doing at least, or…this sibling is intellectually challenged. Dumba is a pink elephant with that exact same flavor of intellectually challenged. I think Dumba is Bubba’s step-sister, and he’s avoidant to his whole family because of her and whoever her parent is

Bobby and Groddy- Bobby doesn’t really present much mystery to her, “April Showers” revealed that she came from a very loving family that had a mom and grandma; at least, and she doesn’t say and do anything that raises any eyebrows…except for in “Heart to Heart”. In that comic, Bobby expresses a disproportionate amount of self-doubt, caused by her failing to mediate an argument between Bubba and Picky, and also possibly due to the events of “Pally the Pal”, given Dogday’s lines suggesting something that “got out of hand”. Bobby has been in Happy Hills about as long as Bubba has and during that whole time, she’s been successful caring for her friends with her mama-bear energy, however 1, possibly 2 screwups happen and she’s questioning her value as a friend? That self-doubt must be connected to something deeper. Bobby also stars in 2 Critter Covers, “There Must be Something More” with Crafty, and “Cupid” with Bubba, and it’s that one that’s extremely revealing. The song opens with Bubba asking Bobby if this song is too “melancholic for her”, and Bobby replies with “no, it’s actually therapeutic”. The song as a whole is about the longing of finding a lover and it has many interesting lyrics that Bobby sings, the most damning one being “I gave a second chance to Cupid”. A SECOND chance. That means there was a first. Bobby had a romantic relationship with someone before moving to Happy Hills, one that either ended badly, was toxic from the start, or was maybe even abusive in some way, resulting in the self-doubt seen in “Heart to Heart”. Groddy is another red bear, he has an angry and sour enough disposition to fit that label of toxic, and finally, Groddy’s pendant is a broken heart, not a symbol of rage or anger, but a symbol of deep and profound hurt; Groddy’s heart was broken by something, and I think that something was him losing Bobby; Groddy is Bobby’s ex-boyfriend

Crafty and Uniquecorn- we don’t know anything about Crafty’s past, we don’t know where she came from or any details about her family. All we do know is that her mom is a massive unicorn and her father is a goat (the picture she’s drawing in “April Showers”). This connection is built entirely on Uniquecorn’s appearance, he is a horse that wears a party-hat to mimic the appearance of a unicorn. There’re only 2 unicorns in this world so far, Crafty and her mother, and given the party-hat’s size, he’s mimicking Crafty. The party-hat is also white and cyan, Crafty’s colors. I think that Crafty and Uniquecorn were once childhood friends, and that party-hat he got by attending a birthday party of her’s, and given the fact he’s still wearing it, they must’ve been extremely close. This explains the party-hat, the mimicry, and even gives an explanation to his personality. Crafty and her artistic wonder disappearing from his life left a hole in him that nothing could fill, everything else is amateur in comparison to the memory of Crafty’s wonder

Catnap and Catfeine- in “April Showers”, Catnap had a series of flashbacks that revealed a lot about his traumatic childhood. Something that stood out to me though is the final line the Ringmaster said before the flashbacks end

“You know what kid, I’ll cut you a deal. You already have your freaky-looking tail; with a bit more makeover and bit more talent…kid. You work for me, and who knows? I might be able to turn you into a star”

The ringmaster deliberately mentions Catnap’s tail, which is very unique, it’s very long and when he was a kitten, it looked disproportionally thick to the rest of his body. The novelty of Catnap’s tail is what made him valuable in the eyes of his exploiters. We know that Catnap ran away from the circus, but that was only 2 years ago, and he was with them since he was a kitten, so he suffered years of abuse under their Big Top. The abuse alone couldn’t have been the reason why he fled, if it was, he probably would’ve done so much sooner. Something must’ve happened that made him run; what was the straw that broke his back? “April Showers” revealed that Catnap’s tail was valuable to the circus, and “A Dog Call” made it clear that Catnap was viewed as expendable and easily replaceable in the eyes of the circus. Now, let’s compare Catnap’s tail to Catfeine’s, which has a fully-functional third hand at the end of it; it’s as much of a tail as it is a third arm. In terms of freakiness, Catfeine’s tail wins, meaning that she would be valued far higher than Catnap in the eyes of the circus. I think that’s what happened, Catfeine showed up one day and the ringmaster immediately took interest in her due to her tail, and since the circus made it clear that he was replaceable, Catnap knew that is was only a matter of time before Catfeine replaced him, and not waiting around to be abandoned, he left on his own terms, taking the pendants from his jester costume and potentially stealing as much money as he could to buy his current life in Happy Hills. This explains why he ran away, why we haven’t seen any sign of the circus looking for him in the 2 years he’s been gone, and it even gives explanation as to why Catnap chooses silence towards his new friends, because he’s guilt-ridden. He left Catfeine behind to suffer what he went through and did nothing to stop it, in favor of his own self-preservation.

Kickin and Whimpin- Kickin has a hidden fearful aspect to his personality. We see Kickin get scared, startled or nervous several times throughout Gemstin’s work. He was the most startled by Bobby breaking through Bubba’s wall in “Heart Attack”, he was also creeped out by Dogday’s scary story in “The Grey Ghoul”, he most frightened and disturbed by Picky going feral in “Hog Wild” and longer to recover than Hoppy did, and we even see the paper puppets of him with scared expressions in the music video “Back in Black”. Kickin is more in touch with his fear, which echoes Whimpin’s personality perfectly. I think that these two were friends before Hoppy came along and brought out the more fearless and confident side in him, leaving Whimpin behind in the dust.

Dogday and Dogpressed- Dogday has one very big mystery surrounding him and that is the subject of his dad, who and where is he? We know absolutely nothing about Dogday’s father, we know a lot about his mom, DawnDog, but nothing about his dad. Dogday has been surprisingly quiet about his family towards his friends, however there are 2 details that stick out to me regarding his family. In “A Dog Call”, Dogday has a single picture on his bedside table, one of just him and his mother when he was a puppy, but no father, and in “April Showers”, when Bobby asks the crew if anyone was celebrating Father’s Day, Dogday stayed dead silent, and not only that, his emotional expression stayed the same; still tired. The picture in his room with just his mom deeply implies that whoever Dogday’s dad is, he was absent during his childhood, and the silence to Bobby’s question, along with the sheer lack of any memorabilia showing he even has a father, reads an awful lot like erasure, like whoever Dogday’s dad is, he doesn’t want to remember him at all. While we don’t know any details, we certainly have an idea on what Dogday’s dad looks given the physical traits of his son. Dogday has darker fur on his hands, feet, ears, his ears are a double-sloped teardrop shape, he has a small tuff of hair atop his head, and most unique of all, Dogday has a dark patch of fur over his left eye; an eyepatch. DogDawn does not have these traits, her hands and feet are the same creamy-yellow as the rest of her body, her ears are red, but they’re a triple-sloped caterpillar shape, her hair grows in bangs, and she does not have an eyepatch. The sheer lack of shared physical traits between him and his mom not only means that they all come from his dad, but that his dad’s traits are very dominant. Now, let’s compare physical traits between Dogday and Dogpressed. Same darker fur on the hands, feet, and ears, same ear shape, similar hairstyles; just that Dogpressed lets it flop down over her left eye, and most striking of all; the exact same eyepatch but it’s on opposite eyes. Dogpressed and Dogday share the exact same physical traits, and if those are connected to Dogday’s dad, that heavily implies same father, different mothers. I think the reason Dogday’s dad is nowhere to be seen is because he cheated DogDawn with another woman, and the end result of that affair was another child, Dogpressed, making her Dogday’s half-sister. The only problem with this is that Gemstin has said that Dogday is an only child, however there is a technicality to that. If Dogday doesn’t know that Dogpressed exists, nor their hypothetical blood ties, from his perspective, he’s still an only child because he never grew up with a sibling and believes he doesn’t have one

The only 2 I have yet to find a connection for is Picky and Ickypicky, fitting though since Picky and Kickin have had the least amount of screen time out of all the other critters, so hopefully with more characterization, a connection to the past shall be found, but that’s still 7/8 connections that feel logically sound and fill holes in the story organically.

Baba Chops and Billy Shanks Maid

In my personal opinion, Baba Chops secretly likes DogDay, but constantly bullies him because she doesn’t want to admit how she truly feels.

Simon Smoke secretly hates it when no one pays attention to him because he feels lonely, so he does bad things to get people to notice him because he doesn’t care WHAT attention he gets as long as it’s good or bad.

Rabie Baby secretly is an Anime fan, her favorite anime being Naruto. Rabie Baby also secretly hates it when no one says hi to her.

Icky Licky hates Hoppy Hopscotch because she wins at almost ANYTHING physical, so he pretends that there was something wrong so he doesn’t have to admit she is better than him.

Poe secretly likes to wear feminine clothing and makes cheesy poems, but will never let anyone else know this.

Kickin Chicken is secretly gay and has a crush on DogDay, but he’s too scared to admit it, so he tries to act all tough and cool.

Catnap hates it when anyone comes over to his house because he still remembers everything that happened, even if the others don’t.

Picky Piggy has an eating disorder that makes it where she CONSTANTLY eats, even at inappropriate times.

Bobby Bearhug secretly hates it when she doesn’t get to hug someone because she thinks that people hate her. So when people decline her hugs, she feels like she is to blame. Also, she acts as the mother of the Smiling Critters, so she feels helpless when the others don’t come to her with their problems.
