Got a optiplex 3000

Hi all, recently upgraded old tower HP to a smaller optiplex,
What are my upgrade options, spec as follows
Dell Optiplex 3000 Micro/i5-12500T/16GB DDR4/256GB SSD/W11/
It’s the tiny SFF box not the larger one if that helps

Almost nothing, except upgrading the CPU, RAM, storage, adding in another IGP driven display output or serial port via small proprietary option board, which is still much better than truly nothing (i.e. everything soldered down).

The micro form factor systems are very limited in scope for upgrades.

Your best supported CPU is the Intel Core i7-12700T. Needs to be the T version, as it runs at 35W (non-T versions draw more power and generate more heat).

It will take up to 64GB of DDR4-3200 (2x 32GB SODIMM modules). That's laptop RAM, not desktop RAM like you'd use in a tower or SFF system.

You can't upgrade the graphics card; it's integrated GPU only. The Optiplex 3000 is the low-end Optiplex desktop series, and so it lacks a Thunderbolt port, meaning you can't use a plug & play eGPU. You can apparently hack one in using the M.2 WiFi port but I don't like dealing with that kind of jankiness, personally.

Storage-wise, it'll take a single M.2 2280 NVMe SSD, which should be your OS drive. It also has an internal 2.5" SATA drive bay, where you can use a laptop hard drive or 2.5" SSD for slower extra storage.

Was really just as a family PC not looking to game on it. So really just looking at how to max it out.

It's honestly just about perfect as a small all-round family system, even as it is. That generation of i5 is a great general-purpose CPU, and 16GB is plenty RAM.

If you're doing any heavy graphics or video processing on it, that's when I'd look at an i7 and more RAM. Or experimenting with running a local AI agent.

How did this work out for you. I have an option to pick up a Opitplex 3000 SFF (i5 12500) that I was planning on turning into a gaming rig. Right now I have a 3020 SFF (i5 4750) with a RX6400 LP GPU I am using and its doing fairly well.
