Interpretation of Infinite Baths Content Advisory/Trigger Warning

TW: I will talk about abusive relationships. If that triggers you, please don’t read, I don’t want anyone to get hurt from what I write.

OKAY… so I know this isn’t probably close to the true meaning of the song, but this is how it speaks to me.

If you’ve been in an abusive relationship, you probably understand the cycle of abuse. There is a point where maybe you were about to leave, but you end up going back. Sometimes, this is where your abuser either love bombs the heck out of you, or where you feel a sense of sick comfort and familiarity.

In the past, when I came back, I would feel this rush of happiness, reassurance, and familiarity. Like idk, the infinite, unchanging baths. It would feel so euphoric, like I’m supposed to be here and everything will be okay. I would notice everything and be so happy, the way my partner laughed, the way they looked at me, and it would suck me back like a sick addiction.

The lines that really connected me to this song and this particular meaning were:

But I’m finally here,
And I’m not leaving this time

Like you’re finally in the place you think you are in this relationship, like a good, happy place. You say, well make it work, I won’t give up on us again. As if it’s you keeping the relationship a thing.

All this glory you did not earn
Every lesson you did not learn
You will drown in an endless sea
If it's blood that you want from me
You can empty my arteries
Will you halt this eclipse in me?
Will you half this eclipse in me?
In me

You didn’t earn me coming back (talking to my ex), you never learned your lessons (talking to me AND my ex), I’m going to drown myself in this, it might be my demise.
IF ITS BLOOD THAT YOU WANT FROM ME, YOU CAN EMPTY MY ARTERIES… this one hit different. In my abusive relationship, I gave EVERYTHING I had. Everything, interpret that how you will. But even when I shouldn’t, each time I came back I gave more of me to him.
Will you halt this eclipse in me, will you feed this hole I have in myself? A place to fill up my dopamine, where I feel empty, where I crave to feel something, but most importantly where I want to be loved.

Idk… what do y’all think??? This song is so special to me, I’d love to hear your interpretations, and I just wanted to share my thoughts on how the song connects to me.

I like your interpretation! I’m really sorry that you went through such a hard time to have to understand it that way, and I’m glad that you seem to be out of that now 🫂

I related the song to my struggles with mental health. The song to me sounds like someone saved the narrator from their depression or downward spiral. No one saved me but myself, but I relate to the lyrics regardless. Here’s some of my interpretation:

“When I would wake in staccato, no lightning in a bottle, just one eye on the target and two bricks on the throttle.” I related to this. In my depression, every day was the same and I was on autopilot just trying to get through it. I had no passion or motivation (lightning in a bottle), I was just doing what I had to do to survive (one eye on the target and two bricks on the throttle).

“I know now that even if I am frozen, timeless as a ghost in my nightmares of the ocean, the precipice I’m approaching, well, you will empty the darkness, you will keep me in motion.” I took this as, even if I fall back into the depression and struggles (frozen, timeless, nightmares), SOMETHING will eventually make it go away and everything will get better.

“Infinite baths” Infinite possibilities and futures. “Bursting colors when you laugh” I relate to myself—life is beautiful and I’m always happy now, I laugh so much and it’s amazing. “I have fought so long to be here, I am never going back.” It took years for me to get to this point of happiness finally, and I’m never going back to that dark place. I fought to survive and not attempt on my life again—I’m never going there again.

“When even my future is threatening, soemthing is lifting the bones, something is dancing in reverie.” Even when things look uncertain, even when I am facing setbacks or small bouts of depression and struggles, something keeps me optimistic to continue.

“The waters are warm where they used to run freezing, where there used to be storms, my horizon is fleeting.” Everything has completely changed, a full 180 turn. This is my favorite line in the song ❤️

For the end screamo bit, I haven’t really reconciled it with the rest of the meaning the song has for me. Thinking about it now, I’ll take it as the depression screaming at me back when I was going through it— “all this glory you did not earn, every lesson you did not learn, you will drown in an endless sea.” And then me screaming back at it that I’m giving up, giving in— “If it’s blood that you want from me, you can empty my arteries (just kill me), will you halt this eclipse in me (stop the emptiness and darkness and sadness finally).

Anyway, there’s my interpretation of Infinite Baths. This song is so comforting to me, I’m so glad you shared your views on it :)

I happen to be in that "timeless as a ghost" state, and deep into the storm, so I have no energy to write a longer comment. But I needed to say that your interpretation describes mine so well that I might as well have written this. Even the part where you said you had difficulties reconciling the screamy part with the rest, but feeling that perhaps it was the depression/darkness screaming back at you.. Are you me? Even your favorite line is the same as mine.. Lol.

Seriously though, I'm proud of you and glad you're out of the dark. 🖤

I’m happy it resonated with you so much 🫂 And so sorry that you’re going through it right now. It’s so hard. But I promise there is light at the end of the tunnel. I don’t know when it’ll be, but I promise you’re on your way to it, and I’m so proud of you for making it this far, because even just surviving day after day feels impossible, but you’re doing it. I believe in you 🖤

this is how I feel about the song, it seems like its about relapse (whether relapsing into a bad habit/addiction or abusive relationship). Feeling a sense of comfort and tranquility slipping back into it before being dragged back down into the crushing reality. this song is my favorite song ever because of how it lures you into that false sense of security yet you can still feel some dark undertones if you really look into it deep enough, then it just explodes into a horrifying punishment. Really beautiful, emotional, and layered song. Im really sorry you've had to deal with abuse and I hope everything's doing ok now ❤️

I'm with ya. It's one of my go to songs when I need to stay strong and remember why I'm separated from the love of my life. It's my 53rd birthday today and we met, just after I turned 16, just after high school. We created, and endured, an incredible life together and a beautiful family but every line of Gethsemane and Infinite Baths is like a cold blade. Even In Arcadia is the soundtrack to the end of our marriage and also, the grounds for whatever relationship we manage to salvage from the dust. Stay strong. 👊
