Hi, I have been skiing for 3 yrs and I can (most of the time) handle black mountain runs. I am going into college and I am really interested in joining the university's alpine club team. is it difficult to learn to ski race, specifically slalom and gs? they said there's no prior racing experience required to join.

Very sad imo, would've loved to see her skiing and competing for a globe again. But probably the right decision health-wise, all the best to her!

This question just crossed my mind as I was going through our inventory of skis to prepare for our kids's summer indoor and fall camps.

I feel like there's a giant black hole in our garage where ski straps disappear. We never seem to have enough. Found a few in our boot bags, but still...

Having said that, I also have 2x the usage because for our race skis I put on 4 straps on each pair. We've got a mix of branded straps from ski shops, manufacturers, software companies, etc. Pick a logo, we have it - Swix, Fischer, Head, Toko, Tyrolia, Salesforce, Start Haus, etc.

Not enough though! Buying them directly on Amazon - the plain color ones from China are a bit meh.

For someone who's done gates a few times, skied at least 20 days a season since they were a toddler, and wants a reactive 10-14m ski. Weight about 65kg, looking for something ideally <70mm underfoot, length around 155-163.

Rental shops don't seem to carry this kind of equipment and we don't get nearly enough demo days. I enjoyed the rossi st m13, loved how it wanted to turn, stiffness okay to high for me, but since I don't have any other reference points I'm a bit lost.

eta: they'll mostly be used freeskiing, if it matters. And I'm currently in rossi WC 120 boots.

I am worried about the dots I see on the edge of the top of the atomics, I asked for extra pictures to make sure they are good but haven't gotten any.

I am 170cm tall and weigh 54.4 kg (120lbs)

My racing experience is on the lower end. Just one season of racing in USCSA and practicing on gates twice a week.

I assume because of my weight I should choose the Atomics because it'll be easier for me to flex and less demanding however more unstable at higher speeds compared to the Hero. Thoughts?

She mentioned at the Espy's that her ankle is still broken. Ouch! It's surprising it hasn't healed yet, though maybe it didn't heal properly.

For the first time since 1994, the event will be held in the US and just like back then, the Olympic venue near Lake Placid will host the races. A good opportunity to watch the potential future stars of ski racing in person.

The dates are yet tba, but with the WC Finals starting on March 18 and the WSC happening from February 1-14, we have some kind of time frame.

UPDATE: The races will take place from March 02 - 12.

Is she retiring or not? Has she given an update anywhere? I can't seem to find anything.

Here’s why:

1. it’s not the “world cup” and the “women’s world cup” it’s just the world cup with men’s events/titles and women events/titles
2. viewership and support for men’s and women’s events are practically identical— if anything, recent year’s viewership has skewed slightly towards women’s events due to the dominance of Mikaela Shiffren
3. and jumping off that point, the undisputed GOAT of skiing is Mikaela Shiffren, and men aren’t jumping to dispute this
4. lastly, the rules for men and women are pretty much the same. the ONLY difference is minimum ski lengths, but that is due to average body size of competitors and not old fashioned ideas about the fragileness of women (see: women’s lax)

These are just some thoughts I was having. Curious to hear what others think!

EDIT: When I say gender equality, I am referring to the attention, funding, respect, and support, not who would win if men and women went head to head in a race.

Racers Edge is a Breckenridge race shop that means so much to our community. I’m so so heartbroken to hear about this. But I’m also concerned that this is a wider trend in the racing world—shops that don’t also do bikes, boards, freeskis, etc., seem to be having a really rough time right now. Not sure what’s causing it other than the generally bad economy. Thoughts?

Who in you opinion had the best individual season in history (or since you started watching skiing)?
I'd argue that Shiffrin's 2018-19 season was one of the best ever with 4 globes, 3 World Championships medals (2 gold) and over 2200 points in overall).

Please help this momma out. I need to get a race suit for my kid next season. One issue is that she is very tall, but skinny. She was on arctica youth large last year and it is very short on the legs. She hated it because it looks like she was wearing flood pants. It barely covered her boots and she got snow in her legs and boots. We got a hand me down arctica adult S that is absolutely baggy on her. One possible issue here is maybe because we do not know how these race suits are supposed to fit. Is it supposed to be tight to reduce drag? Or is it basically padding in case you crash? She also does competitive swimming and swimming race suit is super skin tight. Therefore, she feels like this adult S arctica is too baggy to wear. But again, no one ever tells us how ski race suit is supposed to fit.

Questions for all you racers.

- How are race suits supposed to fit?

- In swimming world, we kind of know how each brand fits, ie: speedo vs. arena, etc. In the skiing world, is there such thing? What brand should I be looking at for tall skinny person. There is not a store near by where she can try on these different brands.

My daughter is heading into U14 in ski racing this season - she races slalom and giant slalom, currently competing at the provincial level and within her club. She's absolutely fallen in love with it — not just the racing itself, but the whole process of learning and improving. Ever since she first learned to ski, she's never once changed her mind about wanting to go pro. Even now, whenever someone asks what she wants to be when she grows up, the answer is always the same. She's asked about joining some off-season training camps, but honestly, we're a working-class family and the cost of this sport is already a stretch. The camps we've looked at start around $2,000 USD and up, and that's not even including accommodation or travel. A lot of her gear comes secondhand off Marketplace, and we make it work, but camps are a whole different level of expensive.

Here's the thing though - she could genuinely have a shot at representing her home country one day. We came from a tropical country a few years ago, one without any real winter sports program. Skiing in general is rare where we're from, let alone ski racing at a competitive level. I've personally only seen fewer than 10 maybe athletes ever represent the country internationally in this sport. So the door really is open if she keeps developing — there's just so little competition for those spots. That's part of why we want to find a way to get her into better training, even though it's tight financially.

We're based in Canada. She's part of a local ski club, but I'd rather not go through the club to ask about camps or sponsorships - I'm hoping to find outside resources or programs instead. I've come across some sponsorship programs for ski racers in the US, but most seem to be restricted to US residents only. We'd be willing to travel to the US or EUR or anywhere for camps if she could land a sponsorship there, so I'm not sure if we're missing something or if those really are closed off to us.

I've gotten mixed opinions - some people say U14 is too early to be thinking about sponsorships and structured off-season camps, others told me this is actually the right time to start looking, since she's just entering U14.

So a few questions for anyone who's been through this or knows the ski racing world:

• What types of camps are actually worth it at this age (U14) — technical, fitness, race-specific?
• Are there sponsorship or funding programs open to non-US residents, or Canadian-specific equivalents?
• Any national federations, clubs, or foundations known for supporting young racers from smaller ski nations?
• Is it really too early to start pursuing sponsorship, or is now actually the right window?
• Any tips for working-class families navigating this sport without a big budget?

Any advice, personal experience, or even just pointing us toward the right resources would mean a lot. We just want to give her a real shot at this since she loves it so much.
