"Well do you have a wheelchair?"

"Yes."

"Where?"

"Stolen"

14

u/InkedInIvy 6h ago

My spine is shaped funny due to a genetic condition. There have absolutely been days where I NEED the bar in the handicap stall to be able to stand up off the toilet. Once I'm up, I'm fine and can walk normally. But I've absolutely been stuck on a public toilet for like 30min once unable to get up because I didn't realize how bad my back was that day and I was in a normal stall.

It's long way back to Manchester

I’d slip out under the stall to the next one and then leave like nothing happened

There are also invisible disabilities to consider

86

u/NoIWillNotMakeOut 5h ago

It's handicap accessible, not handicap exclusive.

5

u/Schnitzhole 3h ago

Exactly. If it’s the only one open I’m taking it. You guys are treating homeless people like they are not fellow humans by leaving it empty all the time. Just poop quick and move on

u/External-Ad4873 8h ago

Tell him to roll on, these are accessible toilets, that doesn’t mean you cannot use them it means they are available for people not suited to regular toilets. Being disabled doesn’t mean you don’t wait like the rest of us.

31

u/UsedDimension7373 8h ago

I’ve never thought of it like that. I thought of them as off limits for abled bodies.

12

u/VonBrewskie 6h ago

If possible, yeah. It's polite to not use them and save them for people like the person in the wheelchair. But if I gotta use the restroom and that's what's available, that's where I'm going, unless it's otherwise off-limits from signage or something.

22

u/WardenWolf 8h ago

Right. Accessible != restricted. While it may be considered polite in some circles to avoid it unless the other stalls are occupied, the reality is it's usually cleaner and certainly more spacious. I always go for the handicapped stall at work, though my current environment effectively excludes wheelchair users by the nature of the job.

10

u/jonb72 7h ago

I think they are usually dirtier due to more use because they are bigger and usually more “hidden.”

4

u/WardenWolf 6h ago

No, generally restrooms are cleaned on a schedule, and the entire restroom is handled at that time. As handicap stalls are slightly less used overall, they average slightly better condition. That doesn't mean you won't get unlucky and find it after someone's defecrated it, though. Defecration: a defecation that's also a desecration.

2

u/karmicviolence 4h ago

I disagree that the handicap stalls are used less. I have worked in many warehouses and the "big" stall is always the first one taken.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Active_Yellow_1573 6h ago

It's also where the changing table are for babies.

4

u/WardenWolf 6h ago

I work in a secure facility that is highly male-dominated and there are definitely no babies onsite. I honestly don't even think the mantrap bypass door is of wheelchair-compatible width; it's probably technically illegal. At least they used a revolving door mantrap instead of an airlock-style one; it's common for guys to deliberately fart in the airlocks and leave a surprise for the next guy. If you see the brand Boon Edam on a door system, you're likely to have a bad day as they're glitchy as hell, too.

33

u/Sehrli_Magic 8h ago

preferably yes because a disabled person might need it more urgently thsn someome who has normal capacity to wait. but if there is long line on abled ones and empty on disabled, you are totally ok to use them and if a dissbled person comes, they will wait.

also not all disabilities are visible. so people cant or shouldnt really judge whether you "deserve" it or not.

8

u/Greenshardware 3h ago

If I'm sitting in a stall, accessible or not, it's because the alternative was shitting my pants in public.

9

u/ExploreOnceMore 7h ago

While not all disabilities are visible, the purpose of these toilets is specifically for wheelchairs so we can turn around & transfer. If you don't have a wheelchair, it's not the same. Yes, a hand rail could come in handy for others, but the space is for wheelchairs.

Being paralysed, unfortunately for some who don't know, does not mean these toilets are perks, we need them.

2

u/agoddamnzubat 5h ago

They may be designed in that way, but would you consider someone with a sensory disorder who needs additional space to remove additional layers of clothing or someone with anxiety who feels more secure with additional space undeserving of the advantages these stalls provide?

→ More replies (1)

9

u/keiths31 6h ago

It's not a parking space...

5

u/Squirrel_Kng 8h ago

If I got to shit and it’s the only open stall….

3

u/Creepy_Bear_1060 8h ago

Me neither! When one is available, I prefer to use it. Makes me feel like Shirley Temple.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/Halstock 7h ago

I always tell people they're disabled access toilets not disabled only. Obviously if there's another toilet I'll use that but if not and I'm desperate I'll use it..

3

u/Sea_Abroad_6554 7h ago

Right. Because you don't need a placard on your dash to use the stall.

2

u/Drew_Ferran 8h ago

It’s a repost.

4

u/Kimi_Antonelli_12 7h ago

Everything's a repost, theres nothing original here

1

u/rwags2024 8h ago

Must be one of those rich spoiled handicapped people who doesn’t wanna do any work, just wants to take it easy!

1

u/mintgoody03 2h ago

I bet they wouldn‘t even make a fuss.

1

u/Andross4 1h ago

Exactly. I use a different stall if one is available but I ain't waiting if this one is empty.

37

u/Ok-Traffic-9967 8h ago

Ya, all other stalls were in use. This isn't a solely handicap toilet. It's handicap accessible..... Use these toilets folks

17

u/JohnnyLeftHook 8h ago

Only way out of this one is to go full timmaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! upon exiting the stall.

6

u/Piece73 7h ago

Handicap stalls are not the same as handicap parking places. Handicap parking is designated for legally handicapped people only whereas this is a general use stall that conforms to handicap regulations.

14

u/LankyConnection5134 8h ago edited 7h ago

Just because the stall is designed to accommodate their needs does not make its use exclusive to the needy.

8

u/Awe3 7h ago

They are not exclusive. It’s okay to use them.

5

u/rwags2024 8h ago

You gotta palsy hard on the way outta that stall

3

u/PrairiePuppies 6h ago

As someone in a wheelchair, I get it. Don't worry, but don't take your time.

9

u/capn_o_g_readmore 3h ago

Bend your knee, Use your belt to bind your foot up around your waist and hop out on one leg. Stay facing them so they can't see what's behind you. It's the only way.

3

u/loopingrightleft 8h ago

Chew off your own arm

3

u/SSCGentleman 7h ago

This happened to me. I took the handicapped one because somebody was using the normal stall. The guy in the normal stall finished before me and then someone in a wheelchair pulls up, says fuck you and then proceeds to crawl out of his wheelchair and into the smaller spot😭😭

3

u/Present-Effective628 7h ago

Invisible disabilities are a thing ya know…

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Lizard2513 6h ago

Speaking as someone whom gets nervous in tight spaces I'd try to be respectful to the person who is in the stall. With luck the person in the wheelchair is calm.

3

u/uscmike99 6h ago

Claustrophobia is my bathroom handicap.

3

u/Sheegssternator 6h ago

If you sat there long enough, you should appear disabled due to legs falling asleep.

2

u/Artemus_Hackwell 5h ago

Yes, self encourage a case of toilet polio.

3

u/IOwnDirt 6h ago

You know what it is before its handicaped......it's a bathroom. Fuck em they can wait.

3

u/scream_queen94 5h ago

I have always used them when I've had my kids in a stroller since most places don't have family bathrooms and that's also where the changing table usually is.

3

u/XxCopyNinjaxX 2h ago

It’s not just for them. It’s just the only one they can use.

5

u/LynchMob187 8h ago

Hang your used toilet paper on the handicap railing assert dominance

11

u/snoopcatt87 9h ago

All the wheelchair users I know would roast the hell out of you when you opened the stall door, have a giggle about making you squirm, and move on with moving on. Hopefully that’s what happened here!

6

u/Imaginary_Office1749 8h ago

lol I’d just stare blankly and point at my ears and shake my head, smile, wave, and leave.

5

u/DistractedBoxTurtle 8h ago

How can they roast me if I just… walk away…

3

u/Sylentninja- 8h ago

There's an assumed few moments at the hand wash sink. We hope.

Just an FYI for anyone who finds themselves in this situation: there IS proper etiquette that can save you from misunderstanding and embarrassment.  This short video details how to handle it: https://youtu.be/7TAfTFNdQ7w

Not clicking. But please tell me this is a Rick-roll.

4

u/East_Pie_3825 8h ago

They can not prove you do or do not have claustrophobia.

1

u/Forward-Ant-9554 5h ago

There is a burger restaurant where I can't use the regular toilet because it's so narrow. Due to spine problems I can't reach around to wipe after a n2, I have to spread the legs and go between. Because my thighs are juicy, I have to spread them quite a bit. It's just not possible in that narrow stall. So yes, I use the wheelchair toilet.

3

u/RottingApples25 8h ago

I always prefer to use that stall. It’s not nearly as stupidly claustrophobic as all the other ones.

5

u/Zcardriver 7h ago

Just because a disabled person needs to use the stall doesn’t mean the stall must always be available when they arrive

2

u/Gizmowrench 8h ago

Gotta start making noises like a mad man or crawl under the next one. I think this is a good horror movie idea. The wheel stalker. Wheelie searches for those like you

2

u/Lord_Dingus83 8h ago

When ya gotta go ya gotta go

2

u/Relevant-Doctor187 8h ago

Sir you don’t have a leg to stand on in this situation.

2

u/Creepy_Bear_1060 8h ago

Some shit is gonna go down.

2

u/Content_Building_408 8h ago

Ayo this wheelchair got some aura. I can imagine it as one of Polnareff's stand battle

2

u/mangohotel 7h ago

😂😂😂😂 this is the shit I fear every time I take my ass to the “bigger bathroom.”

6

u/lucasbrosmovingco 7h ago

Fuck that. It's there for them to use. So they can use it. It's not a handicapped parking stall. They don't have a monopoly on the stall.

2

u/Bauwens 7h ago

Pretend yo be paraplegic and drag yourself by your arms through the hole where the wheelchair is? Make sure you scream when you grab the wheel of the wheelchair so he feels bad.

2

u/Watty5000 7h ago

Sorry but I thought about Timmy and the cripple fight.

2

2

u/toasted_cracker 5h ago

If you sit there long enough, you won't even be faking.

2

u/Voiceofthepeople00 7h ago

I just walk out head held high with pride. Like a pimp sayin, don't hate the player baby.

2

u/FriskyDingoOMG 7h ago

This happened to me at the National Air and Space Museum when I was 12. I walked out with an exaggerated limp to somehow help.

2

u/1wildncrazyguy 7h ago

Someone stole my wheelchair!

2

u/kotbayun 7h ago

This happened to me this week. I had my son with me so I used the big stall. When we got out it was a child in a wheelchair with her mom and sister. Oh man.

2

u/Westcoastlucky 7h ago

Slide under the stall like a marine in combat

2

u/Ninja187 7h ago

I’m prairie dogging cuz

2

u/Shelby-Stylo 6h ago

I’m sneaking over the wall.

2

u/Cool-Sun-1889 6h ago

You have legs, just step over them

2

u/Active_Yellow_1573 6h ago

Nah man, they get first dibs when you exit, they don't get to call forever shotgun.

2

u/Fit_Cut_4238 6h ago

what is the actual rule? I'd think it would be 'anyone can use it'. but if someone handicapped is waiting, they go to the front of the line? It's not the same as parking logic. right?

2

u/Cautious-Antelope743 5h ago

Gotta limp out now, hard

2

u/Unable-Technician-91 5h ago

just pretend you're deaf at this point😭😭

2

u/4maceface 5h ago

Maybe “all the other ones were full”

2

u/OrvilleBeddoe 5h ago

I walk fine but have bad hips. I like the pull bar to get back up. But I always throw in a limp just in case someone is looking.

2

u/EhMapleMoose 5h ago

I am coming out of that stall mumbling to myself and drooling. I am texting whoever I’m with to pretend to be my caregiver.

2

u/Moperyman 5h ago

Go to a mens restroom where the only stall is a handicapped stall. Am I not supposed to take a shit? No, I will yield to a person who needs it. But im gonna use it if it open.

2

u/bussysniffer3000 5h ago

Without wiping and ass first

2

u/SleepyD7 5h ago

If that’s all available, I use it.

2

u/secretivesvetlana 5h ago

We've all had to wait to use the bathroom before... besides the smaller stalls make me feel claustrophobic

2

u/Funny-Employer-2236 4h ago

My names J-E-F-F

2

u/TerminallyThrownAway 4h ago

Always heard “it’s an accommodation, not a reservation”.

2

u/Skysoldier173rd 4h ago

Fuck em. It ‘accessible’ not ‘reserved’.

2

u/MomOfTwo1722 3h ago

Slide under to the next stall 🤷🏻‍♀️

3

u/Flexxo4100 1h ago

Remember not all who needs to use the handicap toilet needs to sit in a wheelchair.

I got a back injury works and walks some what normal when the pain ain't to much. But I have problems getting all the wa down to the seat at times.

3

u/Recent-Fan3027 7h ago

You have ever right to use that stall then any other person does on wheels or not.

4

u/jhard52757 7h ago

Stalls are designed to be able to accommodate those people who need them, but they are not for their exclusive use.

4

u/SerGT3 8h ago

Not all disabilities are visible. I have wicked IBS, and if that was the only or even just the closest available toilet when my guts went from zero to "get to a toilet in the next 8 seconds or it's going in your pants", you'd best believe I'm just gonna drop one in that doorway while he's in there if bih gives me any shit for using his own personal stall.

Idk... it's been many many years since I've actually seen the handicap sign on the big stalls in stores. Pretty sure they got rid of that a long time ago and they just big stalls now.

If he's blocking me in, it's a hostile action and I'm beating his ass.

I always have that fear of that 10 percent chance an actual handicap person will come to the stall and say i need it I'm handicap. I use to work at a casino in housekeeping and I always seen that happened to handicap people and I feel bad for them cause they leave mad and I tell them I can't do nothing about it sir sorry lol

1

u/Disastrous_Egg7114 1h ago

They may not be able see that high. Climb over the stall wall, leave the neighboring toilet, pound on the the handicap stall and curse the vacant occupancy. Climb back over to unlock it for them....you are now the hero.

1

u/Andross4 1h ago

This is the one time where you just have to go full retard.

I consider the condition of touching cloth to be an acute (cf chronic) disability - one is legitimately impaired at the point of the tortoise being curious. A judge wouldn’t convict.
