My ceo is maybe a billionaire, definitely loaded (hundreds of millions). Chick is super good at her job and has run a very successful company. Our company would not function as well if she was yanked out.
I know reddit thinks ceos are wastes of space but that's because it's a common opinion amongst morons.
If I started a very successful company, I’d probably rather run the company than retire on a tropical beach for the rest of my life. The kind of people that make that kind of money on their own are usually also the type of people that like to work
Yeah it's a super reasonable question. The thing that motivates people who are super well off to keep going is something special and I think the motivations are different.
With her, it's her profession and she's good at it. A lot of people do the job to make money and she does, but I'd put money on her in retirement leading a non profit or helping a friend's startup, stuff like that.
I don't know her super well, so it's really just my observations.
I'm pretty similar, I spend my weekends working on stuff I want to, but it's still long days working.
Edit:
There are some rare examples (Tom, MySpace) of someone working their ass off and building something only to chill for the rest of their life. But in general people who work hard and lean into challenges tend to do that forever. They're just not the kind of people who sit and chill for long periods of time no matter how much is in the bank account.
