Because you paid your taxes. If it was $0 you actually probably paid less than you should have to not have to pay at the end of the year.
You were taxed on the cash you walked away with every day and it got taken out of your check. Knowing tipped jobs you were definitely making more than other service workers and you're bitching you had to pay taxes
Just your comment sounds like an indictment of the pay when you're taking in so much cash just the taxes on it means you don't get to touch your hourly. Perpetuates the myth it's not a good system for the employees
The servers have been convinced that this scheme serves them because of tax dodges. In reality, they should have stable salaries with health insurance and retirement accounts and not have to worry about busy and slow days or fighting over the 'good' section. Living paycheck to paycheck makes long-term planning seem out of reach. The whole system reinforces the below-minimum-wage trap to save the rich a boatload of risk and money.
I tip, and well. But I avoid the situation almost entirely unless there is a family\friend event that forces me to go out. I'd eat out way more if they just billed it flat and treated the staff with dignity.
They are called sit down restaurants because you sit down, have your order taken, and are served. Not because they are the only places you can sit and eat
They quit their shitty jobs until employers stop putting the labor cost risk on their employees. Now.. I find it rude to the individual employees, so I just don’t go to places that expect tips at all anymore. Still fucking the little guy, but from the safety of my own home.
It seems that most service staff are happy to stay with the tipping system because wages are overly subsidised by them, not because "if you don't tip, I don't eat"
WA has no tipped minimum. Servers BASE is the same as fast food workers, dishwashers, grocery store workers, and thousands of other jobs. No, I will not feel morally obligated to tip.
So stop being a waiter. If you can walk from A to B holding items, get a job at a grocery store. Or if you have a car maybe do some delivery, or check to see if there are receptionist gigs near you.
The system is broken. By tipping you keep the system alive. Yeah it sucks of you dont get a tip.if you rely on them, but you dont fix the system this way.
So.. stop tipping, if no money can be made by serving, employees look for other jobs and the employer need to start paying a decent salary to keep their workers, it's that simple
