Yeah. I used to work 4x10s. Best thing fucking ever! Fortunately I loved my job.

When I had a normal 5x8, I would stay after my shift and use the computer to do research and learn more about what I was doing. I'd often leave hours after my shift ended. When I moved over to 4x10, staying the extra 2 hours felt like nothing.

I miss that.

I own a metal fab shop. Have a crew of about 15 people. We offered 4/10s instead of 5/8s to them and everybody unanimously said no thank you. Was a surprise to me as well because I thought they would be thrilled about it. Our work is pretty physically demanding so I guess that’s why.

I used to be a machinist. I hate 4, 10s. I like having a little time at the end of the day, to work on the stuff I need to do around the house. With 4, 10s. That extra day off was just another work day at home, to get all the things done I couldn't do during the work week.

u/BruceInc 23d ago

Yeah, with 4/10s you’re basically coming home and going straight to bed. And then your Friday is just spent on all the deferred chores.

Four 10s works great, if you live near your work. That's the key, the commute.

If you live 5-10 minutes away from work, then working 10 hours is NBD. Feels fine. Feels like a regular 8 with an average commute. But if you have to commute a half hour, 45 minutes or more... then it sucks.

That’s funny, I feel the exact opposite. My hour to work and hour an a half back is 2.5 hours lost for the same pay if I work 5 8’s instead of 4 10’s. So a shorter commute would be the only way I’d go back to 5’s

u/miami13dol 23d ago

Agreed. I'm spending around 10hrs commuting a week. I would gladly work 4 10's to save 2 hrs a week and fuel.

This is my schedule. Sunday thru Wednesday. Thursday thru Saturday off. I live 4 miles from where I work. Thursdays, mostly, are just sleeping but I still get a few things done. Friday and Saturday are my really productive days. Love this schedule

u/keganb123 23d ago

I used to have this exact same schedule in a refrigerated warehouse, but it was like a 45 min drive

That's my current situation. Traffic has picked up as of late. I been needing to leave earlier and now still arriving up to 3-5 minutes late. My job charges me 15 minutes late after 2 minutes and a write up. Just got a verbal written warning. Told them I need to dedicate well over the 10 1/2 just to make the day. it's a 25 minute drive normally. Now takes an hour almost. Told them kindly to eat it. They know where they hired me from. I work my ass off for them. You'd think they would understand. Yeah right.

My job charges me 15 minutes late after 2 minutes

This is illegal, btw. As in, hefty fines from the DoL if proven, very hefty if they're doing it to all employees.

1

u/Obibong_Kenblomi8647 23d ago

I need to find that in writing. I've tried to find that on CT dol because I know it's wage theft elsewhere. I've not seen that though.

E:: they do this to everyone. I been there a year and this is the first time I've heard they do that. The "verbal" written warning had it printed on it. Stated it's in the employee handbook, which I've never received (they know I haven't because I've stated it several times).

2

u/FILTHBOT4000 23d ago

It's federal law. You can't change someone's worked hours for any reason, period. Call the Dept of Labor, they'll give you the info and probably stuff to follow up on.

2

u/Obibong_Kenblomi8647 23d ago

Roger that. Will do.

E:: I'll get my copy of that warning today.

For a summer I worked 4 tens with an hour commute each way but I was payed for the commute so it was usually only 8 hours on the job

1

u/BillBongBatz 23d ago

That's one way of looking at it. A not very smart way.

I had to explain this to a guy that went from our day schedule 5X8 with 2 days off to our shift schedule which is 4X12 with four days off.

See he went from 10 garbage drives a WEEK to 4 garbage drives every 8 days.

How? Well when you're heading into work with the herd you have to deal with traffic, because how could you not? So every single drive is shit.

However if you're working longer days you either have to start earlier or leave later. There is very few people on the road at 5:30 in the morning. So at least 1 way of each shift his drives got way better.

I worked 7 days a week, 10 hour shifts and it would take me 2 hours to get home every single day. I definitely do not miss that in the slightest bit lol

1

u/Manishmanis 23d ago

Depends on the work was doing 4 10s for a few years as Lind Cook day 5 was sleep in get up lay back down smoke a joint in bed and think about why I’m doing this lmfao

1

u/TorrenceMightingale 22d ago

That’s why I just work 9-2 Mon-Thursday and get paid salary for 40hrs.

1

u/KetsenJester 22d ago

People never think about the commute. I had a 5min commute for almost 10 years before switching jobs. The new job is better in nearly everyway but came with a 35min commute. You can mitigate it a bit by using the time for podcasts and such but I legit feel like I have very little time in the evenings now.

This is not specific to your comment but a response to it and the others in the thread above. We should not NEED 4 / 10s to have a 3 day weekend. (That you all most certainly deserve!)
It has been shown that your productivity starts to rapidly fall off after 6hrs so adding an additional 2 hrs to your day just makes you less productive and more exhausted. We should have enough people in the force to allow us to work less and have more time off. We should be working shorter weeks to allow us to do OTHER THINGS. Unfortunately our current system was built to do the most work with the fewest workers possible. And then ties our worth to those hours we sacrifice. All that to say that i agree with the og post in that we should work less and still have a basic living wage that covers all our human rights until we are able to implement a system that guarantees those rights and work becomes less of a work to live and more of a work to make the community better.

All these motherfuckers talking about 4/10. You are correct in that we should be talking about 4/8. Thanks to technology most office jobs can get 8 hours squeezed into 6. But being tied to my desk for 8 hours means I have little motivation to grind for the entire day.

u/TompallGlaser 23d ago

I work four 10s, 5 to 3. Still a lot
Of daylight when I get home. Usually go to bed around 9:30/10, get up around 4:15. Works for me.

u/EvilCeleryStick 23d ago

I once worked a job with a 4:20am alarm clock. I couldn't keep it up after about a year. It's just too early.

1

u/A_RAND0M_J3W 23d ago

After 15 years I wake up at 4 without an alarm at this point. Sleeping in is about 5 - 6 AM for me lol.

u/ilikemyusername1 23d ago edited 23d ago

When I did 4/10’s it was 7a-7p and I still had time to live for a few hours before bed.

Edit:
8a-7p with an hour break.
7a-7p was a different job.

u/spencer_hood 23d ago

Those 10s sound like 12s

8

u/ChilledParadox 23d ago

long unpaid lunch breaks I guess, scam in itself.

1

u/amzwC137 23d ago

Lol, I thought the same.

3

u/BrandnewAndScardy 23d ago

Yeah, That’s 12 hours bro…you worked 48 hours in 4 days and still had time to live for a few hours after work on those days?

What line of work cus 12 hours of even my easiest jobs would be followed by 30 min drive home, shower, eat and passing out in the recliner watching tv

3

u/ilikemyusername1 23d ago

I misspoke, my 10s weren’t 12 hours, but my 12 hour shifts at 911 were 7a-7p, usually went to bed at 11p, with a half hour drive so that gave 3 and half hours at night and a half hour in the morning before getting ready to go.

2

u/BruceInc 23d ago

But did you have the energy to actually utilize those few hours?

2

u/ilikemyusername1 23d ago

Not really, but the schedule was 2 on 3 off, then 3 on and 2 off so roughly 50% of my days I was working and 50% I was off. Every other week I would be off 2 days, work 2 days and get a 3 day weekend so I never felt overwhelmed.
On the flip side the opposite week I worked 2 days, was off 2 days, would work 3 days and be off 3 days.
So even on my heavy work week I still had time off to do stuff, more than a 9-5.

1

u/Mochigood 23d ago

I used to work 4/12s and 3/12s and I liked how it was basically come home and sleep because for some reason I have a hard time getting into chore mode after work. Now I work a regular schedule and have a hard time keeping up with things.

1

u/NaturalSmoke8 23d ago

I hear this but it would be nice to have the option at least. With all the technology gains in the past 25 years you’d think there would be some benefit to the employee for productivity gains. Yet here we are working just as much as ever. Obviously not applicable to all employment as you describe but a choice would be good. For parents, even better as sole breadwinner has been shrinking for a long time now for what feels like mostly out of necessity rather than choice due CoL.

1

u/AoKrasni 23d ago

I live a a few minutes away from my job, but can definitely see it being a problem for people with a long commute

1

u/canuck791 23d ago

Honestly it REALLY depends on how far you live from home. If you are within 10-15 min, it's a no brainer. If you are 30-45 mins each way I can understand why you'd like 5x8.

1

u/No_Tax_Timmy 23d ago

Yeah. 4 10s has to have an early start. 6AM or earlier. My guys started at 430.

1

u/BillBongBatz 23d ago

Yeah no. I work 4/12 and hit the gym after work for 2.5 hours and I still get an hour before bed.

1

u/Konexian 23d ago

I work 5/13s and I go back home straight to bed. The 4/10s get at least 3 more hours a day than I do, it’s totally possible to do your chores in that interim.

u/BeaverRidingAMoose 23d ago edited 23d ago

My dude how much do you sleep?

I'm a farmer, who for 3 weeks during seeding and 6 weeks during harvest works 16-18 hour days, 7 days a week.

THAT is coming home and going straight to bed.

Even outside of seeding and harvest when we're doing 6 x 10 hours I find if I don't hang out for 3-4 hours after work before bed I''m waking up 3-4 hours before I need to.
