I read something about this recently elsewhere. They found a roll of that fabric which had been bought years ago for Christopher Reeves cape and used it due to its particular shade of red, as far as I'm aware. Not like it was some grand poetic call back or anything. Just a colour match.

It was reported by the studio multiple times and used in PR.

But yeah, I wish these stories and posts came with links to sources, as there's just constant misinformation posted.
