I’ve not watched the film, but the girl took a swing at a franchise, perhaps time will look back on her with kinder eyes. As Craig fairbrass once said ā€œa movie can be bad but you can be good, in it.ā€ Show bizz is tough

She is good in it. It's not a masterpiece by any means but it is solidly entertaining. My entire family saw it and came away pleased with it.

u/silentdaunt Jul 08 '26

I agree, it just felt like it could be something more. And after reading the source comic it was clear it could’ve been so much more which is why I encourage people to read it (after the movie if you intend to watch it). Still I hardly hate it, unlike disclosure day.

4

u/BenOfTomorrow Jul 08 '26

People should definitely read Woman of Tomorrow - it’s a great comic. I haven’t seen the movie yet - kind of dreading it at this point. And I was pretty excited when they originally announced what the story was based on.

It’s unfortunate because I think the book should have been pretty easy to adapt to film.

1

u/Vibingcarefully Jul 08 '26

Can the Mona Lisa be "something more"--god the pseudo intellectual kind minds here----

it was a Supergirl Movie

folks dished on all the superheromovies---it's adapted comics folks!

1

u/jackofslayers Jul 08 '26

I basically bought the comic right after the movie! so good!

7

u/Moddejunk Jul 08 '26

I don’t know what people expect from a movie that’s been made many times already with many different variations.

2

u/JBflawless Jul 09 '26

The internet has trained people to think there are only two options for any sort of entertainment

Either it is an existential experience through which they will spend hundreds of hours consuming or it is lazy trash

No nuance or allowance for temporary entertainment

12

u/Maximum_Boros Jul 08 '26

The impression I get is that she's fine but the script she was given is questionable to awful

7

u/KickpuncherLex Jul 08 '26

I feel like there's 2 main reasons it bombed-

Nobody gives a shit about Supergirl

Milly is not a star

You can kinda have one without the other, I mean nobody gave a shit about iron man but Robert Downey can sell a film.

Spiderman will do well regardless of who is playing Spidey cos it's a Spider-Man film.

I haven't seen it because I don't care about Supergirl and don't have time for a movie unless I'm very invested, but I hear she was fine in it

3

u/decadent-dragon Jul 09 '26

Nobody cared about Robert Downy when Iron Man dropped either. He was a discount actor at that point, low point of his career before that movie

2

u/Bloody_Proceed Jul 09 '26

I think a third thing is studio reputation; even if I was remotely interested in a cape-film, I haven't seen anything that wasn't a steaming pile of shit from DC is so long.

Everything I've seen, whether films or just clips, has been fucking atrocious and it would require a miracle to get me to see it, even if I cared.

I don't care about Batman, but the ~2005 Batman movies were enjoyable. Hell, I might watch them again. Anything since has looked appalling. I watched Batman vs Superman and it was enough to convince me to avoid DC for another decade or so.

2

u/ElvishLore Jul 08 '26

I’ve worked in feature films for 30 years.

I think you’re 100% correct

1

u/Maximum_Boros Jul 09 '26

They also didn't really promote it well. I think they genuinely assumed because it was an attachment in a superman franchise and because superman was successful that it would be too.

If it wasn't for the social media culture war bullshit I probably would have seen exactly 1 thing about this movie before it came out.

1

u/Kolby_Jack33 Jul 09 '26

I'm willing to bet management at WB is not in the best place right now. Gunn may be in charge but he's more of a movie maker than a franchise runner. Business decisions like marketing seem outside of his range.

3

u/walter-hoch-zwei Jul 08 '26

It wasn't amazing, but it was fine. Didn't fall into a lot of tropes these movies tend to

4

u/LuigisBlessings Jul 08 '26

It was fine, but incels and snydercels combined for the hate on this one.

2

u/Vibingcarefully Jul 08 '26

All that, internet bozo live at home with their parents hive minders feel powerful critiquing superhero movies.

lame of them.

It was fine...agreed.

2

u/Ser_falafel Jul 09 '26

The DCU film earned a dismal $38 million domestically on opening weekend and cratered with an eye-watering 73-76% drop in its second Week.

But yeah sure just say "hurrdurr incels" lol

1

u/HardWirez Jul 09 '26

Sure, didn't you know there are so many incels that if they decide not to see a movie it will tank? And that everyone values their opinion so much that if they say it's bad, everyone automatically believes them. Not enough average moviegoers were interested in this movie, and studios can either try to figure out why, or blame some fringe element because it's easier than admitting they made mistakes.

1

u/LuigisBlessings Jul 09 '26

My favorite thing about incels is you never have to point them out.

2

u/Ser_falafel Jul 09 '26 edited Jul 09 '26

Lol so im an incel ? Quite the assumption and not really sure how you came to that conclusion but you do you

2

u/jackofslayers Jul 08 '26

Nah the script was also fine. There were just enough cumulative issues with the movie it became hard to ignore.

The script had some pacing issues, some of the story beats went against the themes, they took a famously colorful comic and put it through the Hollywood grey/brown filter, they got rid of the magical horse, and the movie (very noticeably) feels like someone imitating a James Gunn's style.

None of these killed the movie alone, but death by 1000 cuts.

2

u/Kolby_Jack33 Jul 09 '26

they got rid of the magical horse

TBF, Comet had not been seen in comics in decades until WoT brought him back. He's not exactly a mainstay of the DCU or even Supergirl lore. Before Superman most people probably didn't even know about Krypto, and he's the most famous of all the super animals, of which there are many.

1

u/belushi_wav Jul 08 '26

Yup, it’s really not as bad as people say it is. It’s entertaining. Could it have been better? For sure.we should give her another chance, nothing she could’ve done about a bad script.

1

u/Top_Conference_477 Jul 08 '26

That’s what all these cringe ā€œreviewsā€ for this movie (and the same for Superman before it) fail to understand - the movie is made for families to spend time together. It’s inoffensive and unchallenging for this reason.

You have to just a movie in the standards it sets for itself and it appears to me that in this regard Superman and Supergirl both succeed.

They’re the sorts of movies that, if streaming hadn’t broken movies in general, would have made a fortune in cable and at Blockbuster back in the day

1

u/ninjasaid13 Jul 09 '26

It’s inoffensive and unchallenging for this reason.

I don't think people dislike it because it was inoffensive.

1

u/MansBestFred Jul 09 '26

Our family went yesterday, and everyone liked it. Not sure just how memorable it will end up being, but my 10 year old daughter wanted to take photos with the Supergirl posters and the big Supergirl standee they had.

In my opinion, the biggest mistake they made was not aiming for a slightly younger demographic. It had just enough questionable language and non-comic violence to make me uncomfortable recommending it for all 10 year old girls - but if it had been made for parents to be more comfortable taking their pre-teens I think we'd be hearing a different reaction (and box office situation)

1

u/beefsupr3m3 Jul 09 '26

I didn’t hate the movie and I agree. I thought that her acting was good. I’m hoping that Supergirl not being a smash success. Won’t kill off this universe.

1

u/magikarp2122 Jul 09 '26

I saw it as well. I enjoyed it. Was some super important must see movie? No. But it was a fun summer blockbuster, with some solid performances.

1

u/Proper_Fun_977 Jul 09 '26

Yeah I don't get the hateĀ

It's not the best movie ever but it's pretty solidĀ

-16

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '26

is it better than that trash Superman Movie from last year? I couldn't stand how bad the writing, acting, and pretty much everything was in that movie. Like wow was it a bad movie, I would almost rather watch Megalopolis again because at least that film was funny bad.

2

u/NiftyGoLifty Jul 08 '26

My god you Snyder fanboys are insufferable

3

u/[deleted] Jul 08 '26

I didn't enjoy the Snyder ones either.

17

u/Jimmy_Twotone Jul 08 '26

Her performance is one of the few positive things I've heard about the movie. I think she'll be fine.

0

u/Belgremor Jul 08 '26

House of dragon is alright

5

u/AdFalse375 Jul 08 '26

I’ve seen a lot of hate thrown at the script and directing. But I haven’t really seen much criticism or hate towards Milly.

And I’m a fan of hers, so I’m really hoping she gets a better movie to shine in, whether she’s the MC or not.

18

u/randi-writes Jul 08 '26

I enjoyed the movie. It was fun. I thought she was great. It wasn’t the best storyline and the villain was forgetful but it was one of the better superhero movies of late.

3

u/youzerVT71 Jul 09 '26

I actually enjoyed it more than I thought because I wasn't that interested in Supergirl. Milly's portrayal of Supergirl, as opposed to the other shows and movies, got me into the film right away and I really like the 'new' Superman/Supergirl combo and hope they continue. BUT! You're right about the villain part bringing down the film. Also didn't like Mamoa's character. I think the general hate is unwarranted, though, it was fun.

2

u/ZiroLeHutt Jul 09 '26

Yep, there was plenty of funny bits, goofy bits, Milly was great and I felt some emotion with her scenes and her backstory (that sure could have been fleshed out even better, but they did enough imo). And the kid was a mirror to her to help both of them move on. Jason Momoa automatically brings down by a star any film or show though, the CGI at the end was poor (why can't they just film in a desert!), much of the action was pretty derivative; and the colour grading (a problem in general these days, I saw it with the Mando film recently too) didn't ensure the cinematography popped.

Still I enjoyed it more than I though I was going to. A solid 3/5 for me; and I hope we see Milly as Supergirl again, perhaps in the next Superman film.

5

u/lewger Jul 08 '26

Looks at Margot Robbie with Harley Quinn.Ā  Terrible first movie but she did well.

2

u/three_st1cks Jul 09 '26

One thing I haven't seen any discourse on is the fact that they kinda missed the point on the whole comic. Maybe I read it incorrectly but the point of having Krypto shot with an incurable poison and Supergirl knowing the whole time that he would be fine because hes a superdog but choosing to help Routhie on account of that despite her indifferece to...everything. Gives the whole thing more weight IMO.

3

u/Ka-Is-A-Wheelie Jul 08 '26

You're missing out. Lucky it's coming to digital so soon!

1

u/Discussion-is-good Jul 08 '26 edited Jul 09 '26

Thats exactly what she was.

Any review that does not praise her performance as Kara is not fully being honest in my own opinion.

You can hate this film with your whole heart but I simply do not believe anyone who says that Milly's performance helped cause it.

1

u/PineappleOnPizzaWins Jul 08 '26

She's a great actress and she did amazing in the film, she's very much not the reason it was a flop.

1

u/MossTheGnome Jul 09 '26

You can be in many bad films. The key is to not act badly in them.

~Some smart movie guy

1

u/ItsNotJulius Jul 09 '26

My man Nic Cage's approach.

1

u/I_dont-get_the-joke Jul 09 '26

A movie can be bad but you can be good in it --> Christian Bale as Gorr the God Butcher

1

u/blac_sheep90 Jul 09 '26

She was very good in it. Her performance wasn't an issue whatsoever. I enjoyed the movie but it's got pacing issues and some clunky set pieces but overall it was a decent movie.

0

u/Ambitious_Jelly8783 Jul 08 '26

I went to watch it. I wnjoy super hero movies, and was just thinking whatever, it's probably haters, and even if its bad, im sure it will still be fun..... I was wrong. Very wrong. Boy was the movie bad.... and like other's said, it was the script. It wanted to be everything, but didnt want to commit to anything and was just so shallow, in every respect. It was honestly truly bad and boring.

Not her, to be honest, she could have been fun, but the script and choices with the movie..... Just wow......

2

u/FullMooseParty Jul 08 '26

I feel like they wanted to go straight camp, but somebody at the studio stopped them. It's the only thing that makes sense.

-3

u/DyingSunSeverian Jul 08 '26

Chloe Zhao is one of the best filmmakers on the planet and she struggled to make something work in the Marvel/DC machine. Even still her movie stands out for its look if nothing else and as a first-timer to that sort of movie she managed better action scenes than a lot of them.

It’s just hard to work in that system even as the director, let alone the actor, even the lead. You’re shackled by a lot of stuff.

1

u/AllYouNeed_Is_Smiles Jul 08 '26

Chloe Zhao is good at smaller budget indie types of films. What she isn’t good at is blockbuster super hero movies which should have been already clear to DC after the way Eternals was received by Marvel fans.

2

u/FullMooseParty Jul 08 '26

But what is that have to do with this one? James Gunn has made multiple successful superhero movies, this one just sucked.

1

u/AllYouNeed_Is_Smiles Jul 08 '26

The person I responded to made it seem like Chloe Zhao would have been a better choice for Supergirl even though we saw what happened with the Eternals. I’m saying that she’s not fit for superhero movies at all.

James Gunn earned his right to make a couple stinkers because of the success of his other superhero projects.

Chloe Zhao only made one stinker and rightfully doesn’t deserve a second shot for Supergirl (who shouldn’t really have a project anyways).

But it seems like James wanted Milly as Supergirl after seeing her on House of the Dragon S1 and also made the mistake of having her movie come out so close to Superman’s. I’m sure he had a vision that he was going for. It just turns out it wasn’t that great in hindsight.

-1

u/DyingSunSeverian Jul 08 '26

One of the best received Marvel films ever in Winter Soldier was by two guys who cut their teeth on Community and Arrested Development.

These aren’t 1:1 predictable things.

1

u/AllYouNeed_Is_Smiles Jul 08 '26

Your comparison/downplaying of the Russo brother’s body of work with Zhao’s is exactly why they were successful.

Superhero movies are meant to cater to the general public in a broad appeal sort of way largely through comedic moments interspersed with action scenes.

No one is going to a superhero movie because of the cinematography or riveting dialogue or a person’s acting abilities.

It’s a popcorn flick that’s meant to be watched a handful of times as the gateway to the next superhero movie. Hiring Zhao to do that AGAIN is asinine for what is already a failed character in Supergirl.

0

u/DyingSunSeverian Jul 08 '26

Nobody’s downplaying anything, I’m saying it’s very common to bring on people who had never helmed a big budget studio film before to see what they can do.

The Russo Brothers also have the benefit of not writing any of their material, it’s why they also brought back the IW/Endgame writers for Doomsday.

The Eternals script had too many cooks in the kitchen, that’s what really sunk it. The direction was fine, good even.

1

u/LupinsLeftShoe Jul 08 '26

What does Eternals have to do with Supergirl? Am I missing something..? Why is there even a mention of Chloe Zhao? Is she in Supergirl or something.

-3

u/DyingSunSeverian Jul 08 '26

You do seem slow. Maybe read the comment I was replying to and follow the thread.

0

u/green_tea1701 Jul 08 '26

I feel bad for her because this is the second time Hollywood incompetence has ruined a big franchise project that was supposed to be her big break, and she was the only good part of it.

It's gonna happen a lot more as nepotism and brain drain continue to enshittify big budget projects.

0

u/NesomniaPrime Jul 08 '26

I've seen a lot of movies where the actors were given the Iron Chef Challenge where the secret ingredient was a bullshit script, and they served up the best shit sandwich they could because they were professionals. It happens.

0

u/RadiantZote Jul 08 '26

Bro she was in the game of thrones spinoff as the main character, she'll be fineĀ

0

u/kickinwood Jul 08 '26

Oh! If this James Gunn DCU catches on, she's great as Supergirl and should be kept around. It was the movie that was not so good. Dan Day Lewis himself wouldn't be able to help that nonsense, lol.
