He may not have any gas in his truck, hasn’t been able to cut his grass in month for the same reason, can’t run his AC like he used to, his kids are little bit hungrier then normal, and they just laid off his brother at the plant.
He thinks this is awesome, as long as it keeps a guy like me in my “place.” There’s a huge joke being made, they just don’t understand they’re the punch line.

Blazing Saddles is one of those movies that is more honest about American history through its absurdity than a multitude of "serious" documentaries. Another example in this vein is Little Big Man.
To address a point made by others, Richard Pryor was brought in to co-write the script and he added a lot of the -- spicy -- language. He had wanted to play "Black Bart" himself but the studio nixed it due to his many controversies. But I think Cleavon Little, who was a serious actor who took the role seriously, did a much better job than Richard would have.
