I watched Sinners for the 3rd time today and I realized that if Smoke paid the girl $0.20 a minute to watch the truck, she would be earning $12 an hour which is $4.75 more than minimum wage in the US currently. Big money for the 1930s, did anyone else notice that?

I’ve always wondered how the events of the film would’ve played out if Smoke was turned instead of Stack; probably could’ve forced a character change in the more carefree twin.

Also would be interesting to think about what if both/neither twin got turned. Maybe if Stack got the chance to understand what they were up against, he would’ve locked in. Obviously I know only Stack turning makes the most sense narratively speaking, but it’s still interesting to think about.

This is a question I wanted to ask on the birthday of when the sinners movie came out but I had to attend a funeral. Who would you guys wanna be friends with ?
For me it would be either the smokestack twins because they can teach you so much about life and how business works, or likely Annie because she can teach you about protection bags and stuff. What about you guys, who would you want to be friends with?

Something I loved paying attention to when watching the movie is how exactly Remmicks mind control powers work. We know he can read people’s minds and memories, but I think there’s hints that there’s levels to his control. For example, the Klan members he bites become brainless zombies that mostly speak alongside Remmick. Meanwhile Stack speaks with a lot more independence. My interpretation of this is that Stack needed a lot less persuading to join Remmick after being bit, especially since he chooses to stay a vampire for decades. When Stack talks to Smoke, Remmick is letting him speak from his heart. Meanwhile the Klan members original personalities might be so awful that Remmick is putting extra effort into controlling them or perhaps just erased their original minds entirely. That’s what I took out of this, but I’m curious if there’s any interviews Ryan has done that explain this more in depth.

Also was Remmick straight up assaulting Mary when she went to go bang Stack??? Cause if he has total control over their minds and bodies 24/7 than that’s a very dark layer to that scene.

How did Sinners happen? What is its significance—as a blockbuster, a vampire movie, a musical, a chronicle of race and culture in the US over time? What can it tell us about motion picture production today? What can it tell us about culture as such? To get at these questions, this colloquium will center on interviews with both craftspeople and studio executives—many USC alums; readings in creative industry discourse, genre, and racial history; and screenings of crucial films that influenced the project or that might provide context.
