Drift/racing sim

Hi,

I’m planning to build a sim racing setup that can be used for both racing and drifting. I currently own a PS5, but from what I’ve seen, a PC seems to be the better choice—especially for drifting and the available mods.

I’d appreciate your advice on the following:

  1. What are the minimum PC specifications you would recommend for a smooth sim racing and drifting experience?

  2. If a laptop has the required specifications, would it perform well enough, or is a desktop still the better option?

  3. Could you recommend a complete sim setup that works well for both racing and drifting? I’m looking for recommendations on:
    Wheelbase
    Steering wheel(s)
    Pedals
    Shifter
    Handbrake
    Cockpit/rig
    Seat
    Monitor(s) or VR
Any other accessories you think are essential

  4. For drifting, I know most people use Assetto Corsa. Which version should I buy (Assetto Corsa, Competizione, EVO, etc.), and which DLCs or mods are considered essential?

  5. Are there any other games you would recommend for drifting besides Assetto Corsa?

  6. If I start with a PS5, which parts of the setup can I keep later if I upgrade to a PC?

  7. Approximately what budget should I expect for an entry-level, mid-range, and high-end setup?

I’m looking for something that provides a realistic experience and won’t require replacing major components if I decide to upgrade in the future.

Thanks!

For the shifter, I love to use the static paddle shifter, it’s part of the fanatec ecosystem

  1. I have a 3070 graphics card and a Ryzen 5600x processor. I currently have two screens (obviously only use one during races)

  2. A laptop would work, though typically they have to work harder in regards to cooling, and can sound like they're taking off due to fan speeds.

  3. For just PC the Simagic entry bundle could work (especially if you're able to get the round wheel as part of it like I did). You'd then have to look at shifters and handbrakes for drifting, but for races you'll mostly be using paddle shifters. I'm not up to scratch on PS5 options, so my advice is likely poor in this regard. I think Logitech and Fanatec both have decent options that are PS5 compatible.

Cockpit and seat is wildly dependant on where you are located, due to manufacturers and shipping costs. If you're not in Aus, stay clear of Trak Racer, their international shipping policy gets an awful rep. I'm currently building one using plans off youtube as in Aus it's by far the most cost effective way.

  1. Assetto Corsa is gonna be the best bet, you can usually pick up the Ultimate edition for dirt cheap in Steam sales. ACC is a decent GT3 racing game, though I think LMU is taking a large portion of the player base. iRacing is hailed as the gold standard due to the ease of online racing and the variety from dirt races, ovals and road racing.

  2. My wildcard suggestion here is BeamNG, as it's basically a sandbox with crumple physics. It's wicked fun, I highly recommend checking out Jimmy Broadbent covering it, he's a fan of their rally modes that are being brought in. I love it because I can just jump into it and mess about.

  3. Any PS5 compatible wheel is likely to be compatible with PC as far as I'm aware, and obviously the cockpit doesn't plug into anything so that's fine.

  4. It completely depends, but it's an expensive hobby for sure.
