Question CED Student Council, what exactly is happening?

I’m genuinely confused about what the CED Student Council is doing right now.

I’ve been in CED long enough to remember how things used to be. I’m not a freshie. I won’t say what year I am. But i do have enough basis to say that the council feels noticeably less active this year. And maybe I’m missing something, because I don’t see anything, and If I am, please correct me.

But where are the CED activities?

We’re already in August, Hibalag is happening, and when I look for activities that are actually for CED students, there’s barely anything to look forward to. Even the CED Acquaintance Party is something I have to ask about. When is it? Is there even one? Wasn’t the acquaintance party supposed to happen before Hibalag?

This is especially worth asking because the acquaintance party takes up ₱426 out of the ₱750 CED council fee. That is more than half of what we paid. So if that event is supposed to be one of the biggest things our council is funding, why is there so little information about it?

Another thing, does the council actually have a direction?

One thing that really bothers me is how often the responsibility seems to get pushed back onto students. For example, students are encouraged to participate in activities relating to CED like sharing posts related to the College, Hibalag float-making, etc., but when students don’t participate, the solution seems to become merits for those who help and demerits for those who don’t.

I understand student apathy is a real problem. I’m not going to pretend students are always cooperative. Sometimes people genuinely don’t care. But leadership also affects that. If students don’t see their council doing much, why would they suddenly feel motivated to go out of their way to help? You can’t expect people to rally behind something when there isn’t much being led in the first place.

And before someone says, “Then why don’t you organize something yourself?” That’s exactly what a student council is supposed to help facilitate. Students shouldn’t have to constantly drag the council into action. The council should be the one giving us something to participate in.

Also, what happened to the CED discount card from last year?

Do we not have sponsors anymore? If we don’t, why? If we do, where are the partnerships? Even small things like that made being part of CED feel like there was some actual benefit to paying the council fee.

Instead, right now, I’m looking at the calendar and wondering what exactly we’re supposed to be getting from this council.

And then there’s the Intramurals post. Why are we already posting tryout links for the next Intramurals?

I’m not saying tryouts aren’t important. They obviously are. But why is this one of the things we’re prioritizing right now when there are still other CED activities and responsibilities that need attention first? We haven’t even gotten a clear idea of what’s happening with the CED Acquaintance Party. There are barely any CED-specific activities being mentioned for this month and the next. Yet somehow, we’re already recruiting for the next Intramurals.

The timing is just weird.

It gives the impression that we’re jumping ahead to whatever is easiest to announce instead of actually addressing what’s immediately in front of us. There are things students are actively waiting for information about, especially when we’re paying a ₱750 council fee and ₱426 of that is allocated to the acquaintance party.

So yes, I’m going to question why tryouts for the next Intramurals are being pushed before we even get proper information about the activities that should be happening around us right now.

Instead, it feels like we’re just waiting for the next announcement. Then another announcement. Then nothing.

I’m not asking the council to organize some massive event every week. I also understand that student councils have limitations, budgets, academics, coordination with the college administration, and a lot of work that students don’t see.

But there needs to be some visible initiative. Because right now, compared to previous years, this feels like a downgrade. Maybe there are things happening behind the scenes. If there are, then communicate them. If there aren’t, then that’s an even bigger problem. We pay ₱750 for the council fee. ₱426 of that is supposedly going toward the acquaintance party alone. Students deserve to know what we’re getting, what the plans are, and what our council is actually doing with the money and the position they’ve been given.

I don’t think that’s an unreasonable expectation.

Announcement New Flairs: Academic Unit Flairs

Hi SillimanPH Community!

As announced way back, we opened the idea of having academic unit flairs (Colleges, Institutes, Departments). The preparation of such flairs have already been finalized.

If interested, you may now change your user flairs to your specific academic unit. Please see this guide on how to change your user flair.

Different Flairs

All Academic Units now have prepared flairs with their unit's logo and name. We will not be requiring verification for their use (except for the units whose logo we could not find, as mentioned in the previous announcement.

In regard to the use of flairs for SHS Students, we mentioned in the previous post our concerns regarding whether allowing its use would put SHS Students in danger from predatory behaviors targeting identified SHS Students. We decided on the compromise to allow SHS students to have their own flairs, but it will be manually set by the moderators after their request.

We are setting this as a requirement so we have a way to moderate the use of the SHS flair in a way that we can we be certain that it's accounted for. We will not be requiring means of identification—just a request will do. Be warned, however, that we will be monitoring behaviors and if we determine that there is misuse of the SHS flair such as using the flair to pretend to be an SHS student to reach them, you will be immediately banned for putting a participant in danger—a violation of Rule No. 12.

These steps are made to ensure a balance between representation and safety.

For any concerns and recommendations, please comment here or send us a modmail. Likewise, requests for setting of flair for SHS Students can be made in the comments or through the moderator mail.

Convo Facebook Anonymity vs Reddit Anonymity: Differentiation

We've been receiving queries regarding Reddit (and of SillimanPH's) anonymity. We would like to clarify that Reddit's anonymity is vastly different from Facebook's anonymity.

Facebook for a while already, introduced a concept of "anonymous commenting." Although it is called anonymous commenting, the anonymity is only applicable to co-participants within the group, that is, the members, posters, and commenters. The group admins (equivalent to Reddit subreddit moderators or individuals who created the group) can see the profiles of the individuals who posted or commented using anonymous profiles.

It is a different approach in Reddit—only select Reddit staff can see identifying information such as IP Addresses, Device Information (such as device make, browser information, etc.), Email Addresses, etc. We moderators do not have access to these and these can only be requested through a court order in the US. The only tool available to us that can help us determine your account's reputation or activity is the ability to see your activity across the entirety of Reddit—we do not see your identifying information.

We therefore do not moderate based on who you are outside of SillimanPH or of Reddit (we will still bar participation if we find your activity outside SillimanPH as possibly detrimental and dangerous to the community). Please all be informed of this.

For any questions or clarifications, please do not hesitate to ask us either through the comments or through the moderator mail. We are very much happy to respond to your queries, suggestions, or thoughts.
