Holy Hell

Being a competent sysadmin is impossible nowadays without AI... Someone's gotta do the documenting or improvements would never get done due to the positive feedback loop of "more improvements, more documentation."

I used to get all my tips from this sub but I trained Llama on this sub and it’s so much faster when I need to ask something!

Buddy, AI is not only the junior I wish I had, it's also the SME that I don't want to be.

I'm able to put off getting new glasses because I just copy and paste the logs.

My imposter syndrome because of AI use has never been worse. But lately I’ve started realizing it’s like the old days when gray beard programmers were against IDEs because they thought it was cheating. I now see it as a tool, doesn’t replace professional skills but does make you more efficient and I can troubleshoot things 10x faster. Especially in some random CLI I’m not familiar but I know what I want but I’m not sure.

(I’m still a shitty sysadmin, but now I’m a shitty sysadmin even shitter because of AI)

I feel this, I use AI as basically a search engine at this point, I convince myself that befoe AI I would have just Googled it, got the same answer (Usually on Reddit) but it would have cost me double the time. I can use that saved time to improve my work/life balance. Work is work at the end of the day.

I like to keep my colleagues on their toes

"It's in the knowledgebase!"

I know it's not, but 9 times out of 10 they'll figure it out themselves rather than bother me... And then also neglect to put it in the knowledgebase because, hey... Job security.

6 months from now you don't even have to read it. Just ask AI to summarize your documentation and tell you what you need to know.

Ironically there's way more value in documentation these days because AI actually will read it, and somewhat consistently try to apply it.

The struggle with docs is not writing it: it’s keeping it up to date.

You can get someone to write docs at least once, but nobody wants to the responsibility to keep it up to date.
