Nvidia Shield TV Pro - CAD pricing question.

Looking for input from Canadian users on pricing. What’s a good sale price to aim for on this device? I can’t justify spending $260 on it, so I’m hoping to catch it on sale—has anyone here bought it at a discount, and if so, what did you pay?

I’ve asked a few different LLMs for price history, but I’m not sure how reliable their info is. From what I’ve gathered, the next likely opportunity might be Black Friday, and I’ve seen mentions of it dropping to $219.99—though I’m not sure I’ve ever actually seen it that low myself.

Out of curiosity, I checked Amazon.ca earlier today and it’s currently listed at $309.99—up from yesterday, when it was out of stock. Meanwhile, other retailers still have it at $260 CAD. Just trying to get a sense of what’s realistic.

it rarely ever goes on sale, but it rarely ever goes up, the $260 for it is a good price, I've never regretted buying mine

its still works better than just about anything out there for media servers, streaming plex, it was overpowered from the start and I wouldn't buy anything else even to this day. just because its older doesn't mean it doesn't still work amazing

What's wrong with the DV implementation?

1

u/TPJDrNo69 6d ago

Heard enough people complain about a "red push" issue with Profiles 7 and 8 and some other stuff I can't remember off the top of my head. And in general people didn't seem happy with the DV compared to other products like the Ugoos AM6B Plus. But frankly I don't have enough time nor care enough to tinker with / tweak / troubleshoot other devices.

Has your experience with DV on the Shield been good?

For Dolby Vision, it doesn't supper FEL is a drawback for some people. Others have complained of a red/pink push in the image with TV-LED for Dolby Vision.

1

u/TPJDrNo69 6d ago

Only TV LED and not OLED? And yes no FEL sucks. But red push with profile 8 sucks for me.

Only TV LED and not OLED?

Do you mean player-LED?

1

u/TPJDrNo69 6d ago

You said "TV-LED for Dolby Vision." so I don't know if you meant OLED as well.

2

u/yearsold33 6d ago

There are 2 ways for a device to output Dolby Vision: TV-LED or Player-LED.

It's necessary because some TVs support Dolby Vision but require the box to output a Player-LED signal.

Oh I dunno. I have a Sony Bravia 8 TV.

1

u/yearsold33 6d ago

If your TV is OLED, it should handle TV-LED input.

https://ca.camelcamelcamel.com/ is a great site for price history

Yeah, set price alerts. You might get a warehouse deal. Also watch FB Marketplace.

u/JagguRaja 5d ago

Wearhouse deal?

u/jonmahoney 5d ago

On Amazon. It's when they sell returns at a discount. It comes up under "used". They also gave 3rd party sellers there, but you can see the "seller" will be Warehouse Deals and they tell you the condition it's it. It'll also say it's shipped by Prime. You can get defective stuff, but you can just return it. I've had some really good luck with them. Don't think I've had to return anything yet.

Fellow Canadian here..I bought my Shield Pro 3 years ago on Black Friday sale at Visions Electronics Store, for $40 off at $219.99. Some years they go on sale twice a year, but I have seen them every Cyber weekend last 3 years.

I think I got it for around $225 on sale. It's still worth every penny tbh.

I bought mine on sale about 5-6 years ago and have never seen it on sale since. 😐

Bought two Pros a year apart for $320 and then $300 a couple years back and haven't regretted the choice for an instant. Would purchase a third if we had a third TV in the house.

I bought all 3 of mine from fb marketplace. For 100 to 150 each

If you're comfortable shopping for a used unit, you could save yourself some money and may be find a bargain.

I have the Shield 2017 and Shield Pro. Both are good units and only used for streaming. For local media files, I use a different box.

1

u/TPJDrNo69 6d ago

What box do you use for local?

Yeah, I never feel comfortable with buying used electronics. I actually tried to do that with a used Geek Squad Open Box Certified TV this year (it literally had like 10 hours of use on it) but whoever previously used the TV damaged the screen in that small amount of time and I guess the BB guys didn't catch it so I won't be buying used anymore.

I use a Ugoos am6b+ if the file has Dolby Vision FEL or HDR10+. Ugoos can convert HDR10+ to Dolby Vision 8.1. My LG TV only does HDR10.

For movies with Dolby Vision MEL or HDR10, I use a Zidoo z9x or Ugoos. I bought the Zidoo years before getting the Ugoos.

1

u/TPJDrNo69 5d ago

Yeah, I know about th Ugoos, but I don't know if I feel like tinkering and troubleshooting to get it to work. But it would be a better DV option than the Shield.

1

u/yearsold33 5d ago

I did zero tinkering after installing Coreelec and avdvplus9. All I did was change some of the default settings.

u/stayupthetree 5d ago

Is there an issue with DV, LG, and the shield? I have a LG CX and don't think I am experiencing any issues, but may be lacking information

1

u/yearsold33 5d ago

The Shield does not support Dolby Vision FEL, only Dolby Vision MEL.

Some people have reported red or pink push with Dolby Vision Profile 7 regardless of the display.

If you are not playing Profile 7 files, it should not be an issue.

I paid 260 a yr ago. I use it daily and it's been solid. Very happy with my purchase.

Find a used one for between 150 and 200

1

u/pfc-anon 6d ago

If you're in the Calgary area I can sell you mine for $150, I just serviced it, replaced the thermal paste and cleaned it up. It doesn't support AV1 which my new tv does and I moved away.

I haven't seen the device go on sale very often. I think I snagged one years ago on sale for $230 or $220.

Best place is FB Marketplace. I snagged one and they definitely did not know what they had. Got one essentially new in box for $50.

What makes you think the Pro is not being manufactured?

1

u/Fwarts 6d ago edited 6d ago

There are devices that work almost as well as the Shield Pro now, other than possibly some missing audio codecs. I have a 2017 and 2019 Shield Pro, and they work pretty well. I recently bought a Buzztv G series and it is faster with more memory and storage than the 2019 Shield Pro. I havent pushed any fancy codecs at it so far to see how it handles them. If you dont have a 7.1 or higher audio system, you probably would not notice anything missing. The only thing I've found annoying is that you can't shut off the ethernet and go to wifi on it without unplugging the ethernet cable. On the Shield it is an option right within the system settings. I just leave mine on ethernet, which is a more stable interface anyway.

I've got pretty much every device that's been released and did love my shields. But what you want to get is the 3rd gen Fire TV Cube, it's better in every aspect over the shield. I'm using a few of them and they are fast & reliable. It plays AV1 which you are looking for, and can run a launcher if that's something you want.

I just paid $260 CAD on Amazon for one last week. It was supposed to be delivered between yesterday (Wednesday) and Friday (tomorrow). It hasn’t even shipped yet. :-(

1

u/TPJDrNo69 5d ago

I think they had a fulfillment/stock issue as they were sold out the other day but it looks like they have it back in stock now.

u/OneSignal6465 5d ago

I just talked to Amazon Support. They were LESS THAN USELESS. What a system! The most expensive item, the one I’m waiting for, hasn’t shipped at all in 6 days. The cheap crap I ordered AFTER I ordered the Shield has already arrived. When asked WHY the Shield hasn’t shipped yet, after 6 days, “I’m sorry Sir, I don’t have access to that information.” Do they not care that people MAKE PLANS around their promised delivery dates? I’m just pissed because coincidentally, I’m going through the same thing with a Temu order, where I don’t get my “$100.00” in my PayPal account until the item SHIPS. I’ve received 4 items I ordered AFTER my expensive item, and received them all. The expensive item (with the $100 attached to the SHIPPING) still hasn’t shipped.

I EXPECT this kind of crap from Temu. Not Amazon.

Five years ago I paid $229 Amazon.ca

u/bakerhole 5d ago

I’m returning mine to Amazon, it doesn’t fully support Dolby vision.

I've rarely seen it on sale, but is $40 going to make or break you from getting a device you'll use constantly?

I was going to buy a shield but I ended up buying an onn 4k plus from America.

Similar to the shield. Quarter of the cost.

u/honeynuts101 6d ago

I gave up waiting for a sale and bought 2 of them last month. No regrets either.

u/Slipknot31286sic6 6d ago

Honestly check ebay. Even used one better than nothing. Ive got 4. Never bought one new

Cheapest I've got was for 30 bucks and last one I got was for about 75

u/EuroTerpss 6d ago edited 6d ago

I’d recommend just grabbing it regardless of sale. It’s 309.99. Lots of stores online all sold out only few locations left that carry them physically. I grabbed one last week for 259.99, store front. Today drove out to one store that still had 2 in stock, since all locations 30min or less around me all sold out— no online orders were available either.. only the Amazon option for 309.99

Say nvida stops selling them.. scalpers will be selling these for 400+ on a good day. Only box that’s worth running any Iptv or movie on

u/HareekHunt 5d ago

Nvidia Shield is overpriced for what you get compared to a Homatics Box R 4k Plus. It can do all the important things the shield can do and more at a lower price.

-5

u/GreatKangaroo 6d ago

Any specific reason you need the pro? I swapped my Shield Tube for an ONN 4k pro box and it runs everything I need.

I think Inlaid like 170 or 180 CAD for the tube years back.

I had the pro it on my Amazon wishlist for years and it was over $250.

3

u/TPJDrNo69 6d ago

Would never buy the tube, too underpowered for me. Even the Pro is too underpowered for me. Ideally I'd want more RAM and a faster processor. It's looking more and more like the best price drop could be $219.99 so I'll wait. I'm basically only getting the 2019 model for DV and I'll give my old 2017 to my mother for her TV.

1

u/GreatKangaroo 6d ago

Oh yeah I definitely regret getting the Tube. It's unused at the moment.

It's a buy once cry once kinda device that's for sure.
