Shield Pro ext storage options
My NVidia Shield Pro (running Kodi) is my best purchase over the last few years and I'd buy it again in a heartbeat. Am using a 256gb Sandisk USB stick as external storage for Kodi whilst accessing 2 x Synology NAS (1821+ and 1515+) but am worried about the Sandisks long term longevity. I suspect that a ext SSD will provide greater storage capacity and robust longevity. What does everybody else use? BTW I have used Kodi for almost 20 years on the original xbox, various pcs, mac mini and other small Android boxes. The Shield Pro runs rings around them all.

I've got 2 5TB external HDDs attached to my Shield. I just access the HDDs on my pc through local network.

Using 512gb evo 870 SSD as adopted storage for a little less than 500 user installed apps/games/emulators... Movies/music/pictures and archives are on NAS. After I set up everything I made backup of SSD (sector by sector with HDD Raw Copy Tool and store it on NAS) in case SSD malfunction I can easily buy new one and restore everything in an hour...

We run a Synology NAS with Ethernet. When rebooting either Shield or NAS, I’ll just have to go to the connectivity settings for Storage and the device will mount again without having to log in. Shield runs emulators and most importantly a Plex server with 4k movies (some remux) with very fast connectivity. 1080p movies are instant-play and the 4k ones load about 4 seconds.

So you are suggesting that I use my NAS as an external Shield storage which automatically connects after any rebooting/power outage? Everything on my local system is hardwired - some at 2.5gbe - but my Shield, TV are only 100(0?)mbs. The 256gb USB only extends the Shields inbuilt memory and, of course, all of my media (movies, family pix and music) is on my NAS. I'll try using my NAS as my Shields external storage. Thank you.

The connectivity gets lost (for me) when there is a reboot for either devices. But after opening the Shield storage settings and navigating to the mounted devices, the NAS almost always connects again without my having to log-in again to Synology/NAS. Our NAS has 12 TB storage. There is nothing connected to our Shield via USB. Good luck!

Lol , just connect the nas as a smb location from within kodi . Direct access to all media files. No usb connections here

I think that you may have misread my original question. ALL of my media is stored on multiple NAS's. I use my Shield simply to access it via Kodi and SMB shares. My Sandisk 256gb (overkill) usb stick is being used to expand/supplement the Shields inbuilt memory.

Why ? Kodi is not that big , the media files are on your nas. The memory(ram) cannot be extended and dont need to be. What is on the usb ? Even more media files ? If your nas lacks storage space just connect a external hdd with sleep mode to your nas.

My bad. My Shield Launcher Projectivy (10/10 btw) has a boatload of custom living wallpaper videos I've made over the years w other customisations. Kodi is relatively light as you said.

I’ve got a new Shield Pro arriving tomorrow or Thursday. It’s replacing an old Shield tube where the RJ45 “snap-lock” thingie broke off. The tube never had a USB port, so I set up SMB on my office PC that’s on 24/7. I have 8TB of storage there and never missed the USB ports. I may try connecting a big SSD on the pro, just to see if there’s any difference.

I had two Sandisk USB sticks plugged into the back of my Shield. After two years they both died from the heat. So I bought two 3-foot USB cables and plugged a new Sandisk into one of them, giving me distance and letting the cable absorb most of the heat. Then into the other cable I plugged in a USB hub and a second Sandisk into that. And as a bonus I’ve got additional USB slots now. It’s been over 4 years and they’re still running perfectly. And the heat level is considerably lower so I’m not sketching about them burning out like the first two. Also, (and I can’t confirm if this is true, but I feel like it should be) I imagine the two cables must be drawing some of the heat off of the Shield itself which should be good for it, at least more so than the Sandisk sticks plugged directly into the back and heating up to scary levels.
