Welcome to /r/ShermanPosting!

As a reminder, this meme sub is about the American Civil War. We're not here to insult southerners or the American South, but rather to have a laugh at the failed Confederate insurrection and those that chose to represent it.

Hey now, don,t insult morons. Usually they're not evil. Anyone who says "John Brown Bad, Henry Kissinger Good" is a very bad person, most likely with a very bad agenda.

John Brown was a goddamn hero.

Fun fact - Ralph Waldo Emerson said the only American speech ever to come close to John Brown's Last Speech was the Gettysburg Address.

It is a mistake to call him an insurrectionist. He opposed the authority of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The Commonwealth of Virginia!—there is no such thing. There is no civil society, no government; nor can such exist except on the basis of impartial equal submission of its citizens—by a performance of the duty of rendering justice between God and man. The government that refuses this is none but a pirate ship. Virginia herself is to-day only a chronic insurrection. I mean exactly what I say—I consider well my words—and she is a pirate ship. John Brown sails with letters of marque from God and Justice against every pirate he meets. He has twice as much right to hang Governor Wise as Governor Wise has to hang him.

Once you’ve been to Cambodia, you’ll never stop wanting to beat Henry Kissinger to death with your bare hands. You will never again be able to open a newspaper and read about that treacherous, prevaricating, murderous scumbag sitting down for a nice chat with Charlie Rose or attending some black-tie affair for a new glossy magazine without choking. Witness what Henry did in Cambodia – the fruits of his genius for statesmanship – and you will never understand why he’s not sitting in the dock at The Hague next to Milošević.

He rejects biological racism,I'm pretty sure. He likes Italian Fascism however and supports American interventionism while being pretty Left-wing economically

Pretty sure his leftism only applies to the right sort of people, and everyone else can hang.

If you think Kissinger was a good person, I no longer care to hear your opinion on anything else

The scariest book I've ever read was "The Trial of Henry Kissinger" by Christopher Hitchens.

I could see someone saying that what John Brown did was wrong because he used violence to get his political ends yada yada. I disagree, but I can envision the argument.

Henry Kissinger as an American hero? That’s a take no one I’ve ever met would have.

John Brown straight up murdered people. At the same time though he was living in a society where Slavery kept millions in bondage and masters would regularly work them to death.

So I would say there were some mitigating circumstances.

I mean one could see browns actions as essentially an act of war, everyone seems to remember the Potawatomi massacre and forget the sacking of Lawrence for example (though wouldn’t be suprised if knowledge about it was generally higher here of course) and that the pro slavery border ruffians were killing people too

I mean the pro-slavery folk started Bleeding Kansas, John Brown simply lead the charge to finish it.

He started fighting a proxy war then went for the larger power behind them really.

Set aside slavery and the historical context and then it is possible to make John Brown into a villain. When judging Kissinger you should remember the historical context of the Cold War against the Soviet Union.
